Okay, so I'm working on putting my final project together for photo, and while I know exactly what I want to do, figuring out how to get there is another matter. Basically, I want to overlay newsprint and then maps on a couple of different photos.

Something like this:

Basics

becomes this:

mockup

(it's a shitty mockup, but I think you get the idea).

I tried doing it in the darkroom in a couple of ways and it looked too sloppy (like... I used a rudimentary mask, which was a total pain in the ass to make and the results weren't great), so I'm down to my final option, which is making transparencies.

Either I'll make normal ones and put them on top of the images and then rephotograph them, or I'll make negatives of the images I want to overlay and then try to use those in the darkroom.

I guess my question is, ultimately, do you have any advice for how to do this? I need to get this stuff ready tonight, and while I have a basic idea of how to do it, I don't have loads of time (three days, and I have other classes/finals), so I can't afford to waste too much.

If I want to print 8.5x11 transparencies, should I be making them at 300dpi? Also, I don't really know how much texture/detail I should try to leave on them. Sigh. I'm going craaaaazy.

yeah, print a digital transparency then place it on the print and rephotograph.
Steve The Great
Steve The Great on Dec 06 '09 at 9:02pm
it's how I'd do it.

should I make it at 300dpi, though? Does it matter? Can it be something different?

And do you think making a negative one to lay over the image would just not work at all, or would it just be harder?

dpi is upto you the higher the dpi the higher the quality me thinks anything more than 300 will possibly end up as overkill
margolove
margolove on Dec 06 '09 at 9:17pm
ah, okay, that's good to know. I mean, as it's a transparency, I'm thinking that the quality doesn't have to be *too* good, so that's a relief... definitely widens my options as far as source material goes.

I love this shot.

That's a face for currency! (I heard that somewhere, and agree..) : )

thank you! I'm glad. I'm almost sad that I'll be putting stuff on top of them, 'cause I actually really love them all on their own.

Ha! I didn't want to say, but I do like it better as is, not print...

So what if you fail??
margolove
margolove on Dec 06 '09 at 9:29pm
haha, I don't totally understand - do you mean if I fail at accomplishing this specific thing? If I can't get it to look right, I'll seriously just use the basic images instead. They look nice anyway, haha. And my final project can be whatever I want it to be, so it's not like it would kill it.

And all you others, pshaw!

trying to think of the easiest way to explain what I'm thinking

just printing through the newspaper would get you white letters on the final print.

making something else to print straight through seems to me like it would be impossible to do simply. To get the words black, you'd have to actually manipulate the original negative to be clear there. Or you'd have to do a complicated system of internegs which I can't even figure out

or you could just re-photograph the black words on the print and use that

Anyway, I guess the reason I'm even bothering with this is that I feel like it will all tie it together more as a whole, as I was envisioning it as a comment on identity... like, the things that influence you that you wouldn't normally notice are printed on your skin, if that makes sense.
margolove
margolove on Dec 06 '09 at 9:32pm
yeah, I'm thinking the re-photographing sounds like the easiest right now. I can go get the transparencies printed tomorrow morning and then work on that. Plus, I don't think any other way of doing it would be as precise or accurate.

the map ones will hopefully look something like this:

ooh that map one looks cool.

I realized after I typed that sentence that I would be the only one who understood what the hell I was talking about. Here goes:

I meant -- I assume you need some kind of mixed-media result for a specific assignment, and that you might fail if you submit the "plain" pics. Anyhoo, I'm pooped and not too coherent.
margolove
margolove on Dec 06 '09 at 9:48pm
oh, no, I definitely wouldn't fail :) It doesn't have to be mixed media at all - I just chose to bite off more than I could chew, haha.

Margo -- maybe you can help me. You're a girl, right?

What t-shirt should I get for my daughter, who is 13 going on 18. She wants the "rules of shotgun" shirt (or said so a few weeks ago), but thought she might like something cuter.

What do you think?
dorkman
dorkman on Dec 06 '09 at 9:49pm
Well, if the newspaper one looks at all as good as the map one, I say go for it. I take back my comment earlier...

The map looks textured, or, I should say, 3-d-ish.

PS I get my kids threadless shirts every Christmas.

margolove on Dec 06 '09 at 9:51pm
oh, well, awesome! Haha, yeah, I think it will look much better in practice. Hopefully. Guess I'll spend another hour tonight making another enormous newspaper college... good times.

As far as the shirts go, I think that one's appealing, but it's hard for me to judge. Honestly, I haven't been paying attention to anything that's come out recently on the site, so I don't think I'm very helpful :(

and aww, that's sweet! Good gifts, indeed.
dorkman
dorkman on Dec 06 '09 at 9:54pm
Me neither! I've just spent some time cruising around, and there are some really colorful shirts, but, heck, she did say she wanted the "shotgun" shirt, so I guess I can't go wrong there.

That was my Hemingway sentence, above.

"Good times" making another enormous collage. You crack me up.

Did you have a good thanksgiving? Did you get back to Ohio?
margolove
margolove on Dec 06 '09 at 9:55pm
it was alright. It's not really worth it to just go home for two days, so I just stayed on campus with some friends. We cooked dinner, though, so that was nice.

That's cool, assuming it was with good friends.

I especially like buying shirts for my oldest son (14) who is autistic. He's high functioning and super-smart, and loves the ironic humor in many of the threadless shirts.

okay, once again, thanks, everyone! I have a much better idea of what I'm doing now. Off to the darkroom to try to make some perfect prints...

hmmm, you really think so? I guess I'll have to get some made for my etsy site, then! Do you think I should sell darkroom prints or just get them done digitally? I'll have to wait like a month if I do the first one...

Yes, I really do think so!

I'd say go digitial, for ease... Question is, how do you sell it? Does Etsy work for such things? Or, can you sell them on consignment at an art store?
