I feel like I'm losing it.

My elderly aunt (67.. which is pretty elderly in comparison to my parents), whom I love dearly, has been here for about two-and-a-half weeks. Cool, but I've been in charge of like.. keeping her occupied all day. And driving her around. Without anyone (so far) paying me for the gas I've been using.

And today I got forced (literally, she just gave up and shoved the phone at me) to talk to some weird guy on tech support for two hours while she just kind of dropped her computer (which runs Vista... which I've never used before...) on my lap and expected me to fix whatever was wrong with it. And then freaked out when I turned off her firewall for two seconds. And then proceeded to repeatedly bombard me with old-person paranoia and misinformation about computers and the way the internet works. OMG I am so glad I do not work in tech support.

I feel bad for being so ticked off, because she's a really nice person and has always been great to me, but omfg I am ready to lose it. I think I can feel my eyes going in opposite directions.

Kittens?

Play hide and seek with her and when she hides, run off.

It's your job to serve her as she's your aunt and she's done alot of work back in the days to potty train you.

Yikes.

A few years ago, my sister muted my grandmother's computer when she was using it, and for months afterwards, we got frantic, angry calls from her about how my sister had broken her computer.

haha gerps. How do you know the intimate details of my life?

ahahahaha flourpower, that's nuts. We had better not be receiving any of those... I guess I'll just pass off the blame to the tech support dude if we do. Similarly, I had to spend an hour trying to get her wireless working... until I finally realized that she just had the damn wireless switch turned off.

my aunt = twenty billion times worse than my mother, because my mother just like... accepts whatever I'm doing and doesn't freak out about it. Not "OMG YOU TURNED OFF MY FIREWALL THE MONGOLIAN HACKERS WILL GET ME IF I CHECK MY EMAIL!"

Old people can push you over the edge. At least you can spank children who have tantrums.

Look forward to your parents getting this way too. It happens to everyone. Sorry. Sometimes I find speaking to them children works (i.e. being firm and taking no nonesense).

aw man, deb, yeah... I can already see it slowly creeping up on them. Oh well. If I'm lucky enough to make it there, someday I'll be that way, too.

haha hads, yeah... I figure it's okay, I just really don't want to take it out on her in any way.

I was the defacto comp person for my apartment building (at the time, the only person under 50 in the building) and drove me bonkers. They'd call all day, all hours, not remembering how to turn it on etc. One nice deed turned into a friggen 24/7 expectation of tech support from these people.

Definately play hide and don't seek.

(oh, and a fun thing is to change their sound effects.)

Ahhh, the joys of family.

I can even count how many times I felt like I was going to lose it when I'd go grocery shopping for my grandmother and she had me return the avocados I picked out because they weren't to her liking.

my wife and I (though far more her) is responsible for her sister's daughter three times a week (without pay or any compensation), her 80 some odd years old grandmother everyday (her father, a single child, is almost useless - and actually calls my wife to see if SHE checked on his mother). She works three days a week and also cares for our 5 month old baby. She does this almost entirely solo (my mother helps out TONS with the baby, but still). Oh and my sister-in-law is about to have ANOTHER child which no doubt will be our responsibility along with his older sister.

She does this EVERY week. She's always on the cusp of losing it - but if she doesn't do it, no one will. My sister-in-law's children will show up to be moronic, wild, white trash and her granny will whither away alone without family. Suck.

awww, kyle, that's terrible. For everyone involved. And your wife sounds pretty amazing for being able to take that all on. Something similar happened in my mother's family when my grandmother's Alzheimer's got bad.

We got my grandparents a computer for Christmas last year, and they called us, angry and freaking out, because whenever they clicked on something it wouldn't open up.
It turns out that they were just double-clicking incredibly, incredibly slow, so the speed had to be adjusted.
Drove everyone crazy until we could figure out what the deal was.

want a laugh? read my last post on your flickr pic. You know, the one with the dirty wordy. (Potty mouth!)

You know what old people like? Take her to the mall for a walk. You shop, go home, etc., then pick her up in a few hours. That'll teach her!

/I kid.

I used to work with older folks. There are a few things to keep in mind,(though I'm totally sympathetic, few things can git ya like they can)
1.They're timetravellers from a very different world. If you graduated high school in 1959, a computer was a whole building, Hawaii wasn't yet a state, it was another place. A place where if someone even Called you a communist, you could lose your job and get arrested.
2. They get anxious a little easier. Impending mortality is something everyone has to deal with, but even if your family is there, we all die alone. That's freakin' scary, because we're pretty fragile little guys, humans.
