Okay, I know this topic has been mentioned in a couple of blogs already, but I think it would be a good idea for Threadless to do “gay” versions of this tee (i.e. the guys’ names printed on guys’ shirts and the girls’ names printed on girly shirts). They could be available in smaller quantities than the regular print run, making them “limited edition” (and this would solve the problem of printing a shirt that a smaller percentage of people would be interested in). I think that there would be a fair amount of demand for them, judging by some of the comments I’ve seen. At the end of the day, I’d really like to have this tee with the guys’ names on it, but don’t fancy starving myself just so I can fit into a girly XL!!

Yep, I am one of those people who blogged about this.

Threadless has always been very open to listening to what its users would like; it's the whole premise of the site, after all. I think if we can get enough people to express interest in this and show them that, yes, Threadless does have a gay population, they might consider doing this. And besides, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a good handful of non-gay customers who would buy a shirt with the same sex's names on it - for novelty purposes, I suppose, or aesthetics. (Most people are in agreement that the girls' names look prettier. Ahaha.)

i'm not gay but i think thats a jolly good idea.

(it's none of my buisness and i couldn't care less either way,but are you gay wildy?)

also wildy, youv'e been on this site quite a while(like myself)

is it me or have the tee's these past few months been quite poor?

To d3d: Ooh, you cheeky boy! I love a good bit of sarcasm - ha ha!!

To Ady: Thanks. I am indeed "a lover of one's own" (translation: gay.) I have been knocking around on here for a while and I agree about the tees. There's been a couple of interesting ones, but nothing that's really floated my boat, personally. Oh well, good for the bank balance I suppose!

To The Domo: Thanks for the support! Let's hope enough people agree so that they will do it. By the way, you're a very foxy lady (don't worry, I'm not coming on to you - see comment above to Ady!)

Its a bad idea, abslutly terrible idea, why? because homosexuals are a minority. It would make sense if threadless was a homosexual website because the bulk of its target audience would be homosexual but its not, homosexuals are in the minority on the website and in society as a whole.

What would happen is threadless would end up with a large amounts of tee's it cant sell, which means threadless would loose a whole lot of money.
theOtherSideOfPink
theOtherSideOfPink on Nov 30 '05 at 7:10am
that's why they'd print a small amount Stubby!
Stubby42
Stubby42 on Nov 30 '05 at 7:16am
Honnestly I still dont see the point in doing it other than to be politically correct, look out of the people who have shown support for this idea, how many of you are atcually homosexual/bisexual? and how many of you would atcually buy a version of the tee?

The fact is that even if people are saying they support the idea alot wont wear it, I'm hetrosexual, why would I wear a tee with a guys name on it?

Your litterally talking about producing such a small amount of tee's when maybe 3 or 4 would sell.

Threadless buys and prints its tee's in bulk which lowers the cost of the product considerably, most companies do a minimum order of 24 tee's . Threadless is spending a considerable amount of money to buy tee's that dont have appeal to a decent amount of consumers within threadlesses market.

What your asking threadless to do is to make a garentied loss of money.

older gay men hit on me all the time, almost wherever i go. i love this idea, but i couldn't wear the shirt, cause that would only encourage them. it's always a very creepy experience, though i've gotten several free drinks outta the bargain. i'm like a little redheaded treat to them, or something.

Wildy on Nov 30 '05 at 8:39am
Ady: No problem. Re the angel outfit – maybe I should hire out my services for nativity plays!

Stubby42: It’s not about political correctness. I appreciate your comments about the costing, but I still think that more than “3 or 4” would sell. I’m sure they could shift 24 of each. Perhaps someone from the Threadless team could give an opinion?

kidderliverpool: Swapping sleeves - what a good idea! As for the glitter – I won’t be doing that again in a hurry; it took me bloody ages to get rid of it! I think it has finally all gone now. Ha ha!

jackanapes: You must obviously have that “x-factor” that a lot of older gay men are looking for! ;)

Statistically homosexuals are the minoritory, plain and simple its a fact, there are anomallys such as places that have built up a reputation for being homosexual places to go (for example gay bars) but these types of places are made espcially for them.

Oh and I've been to brighton, I live in the UK.

katie has it right. i think they should have printed both versions in both gender sizes. not only gay friendlier but also better for us girls that are tall and can't be blown over by a light wind. i'm a girl and i wear the guy's shirts (they fit much better than the girls sizes). and there are smaller guys out there who wear the girl's shirts, too, regardless of sexual preference, etc.

i'm not sure why anyone who wouldn't buy the shirts would care whether or not they were printed. a good number of the people who object to the idea here respond by saying "well, I'd never wear it." it's like objecting to a food's existance because you wouldn't eat it. duh. this is absolutely a good idea in theory.

the issue here has to be pretty much purely a business issue for threadless. will a small run cost more? will threadless be able to sell a small run? how could they know ahead of time how "small" is "small". and then can you see it on the stock page: "Dear Departed: Special Gay Edition"?

maybe there should be a "cross-dressers" club. you pay $200, and every month they pick the most "gendered" shirt of the month and cross print it. available only to club members.

at any rate, it surely would have been easier to do this when it was first printed than it is now. so the whole issue might be moot unless reprint time comes around -- and I don't see this shirt getting reprinted for some reason.
sarahrae
sarahrae on Nov 30 '05 at 10:55am
well my first reaction was what travis mentioned above, and that's just to buy the other gender's shirts... it's not like they are printed on a bad color that just won't work out for sex switching...

But the reason why you won't see it done isn't because the homosexual population is a minority, i am sure Threadless would help you out for circumstances such as this one, but small batch printing is more expensive than large batch printing or are about the same price.

And then if they don't sell they have them hanging out around the storage shelves getting in the way of all the stock that is actually rotating.

And they have to keep inventory on them... exc.

Good suggestion, but in the small business world, it doesn't work out as easily!

Wildy
Wildy on Nov 30 '05 at 11:09am
Neal/Steve/Sarah: Thanks for the interesting points. I love the idea of the "cross-dressers" club Steve - ha ha!

I would buy the girly XL but I think it would probably be a tad too small. My sister buys that size and I don't think it would fit me. Now if they did a girly 2xXL, maybe that would work...
The Domo

A point in reference for those worried about the business aspect of the proposition:

Quite a long time ago, around the time that I first started visiting Threadless, a mistake was made, and the entire first press of Afternoon Delight was printed with a (very noticeable) printing error. ...In time, they managed to sell every last one of them. ...People like to own things like this, particularly Threadless junkies such as myself, who have been on the site for some time now, and who treat their shirts as a collection. (I've got 88 Threadless t-shirts of my own, and the count is always rising. ...Yes, 88.) ...I believe that a batch of shirts such as this would indeed sell out eventually, and I don't think that gays are the only people who would buy them. ::shrug::
sarahrae
sarahrae on Nov 30 '05 at 11:12am
yeah but there might be a small difference between owning a reprint of a mating unicorn shirt and a shirt with names on the sleeves in a "gay version"

No one can really say for sure without polling it to find out how many users would really like for shirts to be done. But gay or not, the idea behind threadless is so design tshirts... I am sure they aren't picking designs that "aren't gay" or "are gay" They are just picking tshirts that they want to wear.
Wildy
Wildy on Nov 30 '05 at 11:13am

I am all for the queer version of these shirts.

I don't know how Threadless does their printing. Whether it is hand created screen printing or computar done, or something else entirly. The new screens would be a money issue. As for the shirts, AA at least, lets you order as many or as few as you want. Threadless probably could print a very small run.

Some of the shirts they have printed in the past have taken a very long time to sell out, and if they had a huge amount I'm sure it was a problem for them. But to take a chance on 50 hundred shirts (25 guy 25 girls ), I think would be a drop in the bucket for them.

Just think about how many people are on this site all the time? And I don't mean only the bloggers and people who are part of the community. People who never even comment buy the shirts. And the numbers are growing every day. And (i know some of you don't want to hear this) part of those people are queer.

Yes the queers girls could just settle for the mens shirt and vise virsa. But ,

I don't think it is crazy to ask for a shirt that fits.

Ultimately Threadless will have to decide if they want to take an interest in this issue. If they do, they could start apoll to see how many people (queer or other wise) would buy. And then decide if it is cost effective for them or worth a risk.

Clearly it is an issue just by the number of blogs the topic has generated.

I want to say, good discussion from everyone on this topic. Those for and against have made very important and well thought out points.

Now, I think, it is time for Threadless to weigh in.

Why dont they just buy a girl's shirt..?
sarahrae
sarahrae on Nov 30 '05 at 12:24pm
is there really that many designs though that are JUST a girls shirt or JUST a guys shirt?

I would go on a limb and say that 99% of the shirts that are and have been printed work for everyone. Am I wrong?
Stevethegreat
Stevethegreat on Nov 30 '05 at 12:37pm
I've just read all the posts in here and I agree that it would be very nice for you guys and gals who want it to have a "gay" version

only problem is in the actual design.....the guys t-shirts have more girl names on them then the girls t-shirts have guys' names.

this would force our friend, the designer to create two more designs in addidtion to the two he's already created......would we want to put him through that?

I think the logistics of it are just too much for an already overworked staff
Solmu
Solmu on Nov 30 '05 at 12:58pm
Stevethegreat: good point about the design needing to be changed... I think we'd all managed to overlook that.

Two other things: 1) Threadless' printer's minimum is 144, so the suggestions of doing 24/50 etc. wouldn't fly. 2) Stock management on two shirts that similar would be a nightmare.

I am disappointed by the amount of homophobia displayed by some people in this thread, but at the same time I personally don't think doing an alternative version is a very good idea. There's always shirts we won't wear for one reason or another; for some people this will be one of them.

and i disagree... i don't think that there is homophobia going on, just questions.

Threadless has never printed a shirt that has been gender specific before this one. So it's new ground. I think its more an idea of "oh... I never thought about that, we could uh... do *insert suggestion here*"

Solmu, hey dip shit I dont appricate being called homophobic, get your head out of your arse and go read what I said (dont pretend I wasnt one of the people it was directed at because I've been dead set against a homosexual tee).

Just because I think the idea is bad doesnt mean I think its bad because I'm homophobic. Fuck all I said was the idea didnt make buisness sense, it wasnt like I was saying burn all the homosexuals.

I'm far from homophobic and I'm extremly ofened that you would even suggest it, let alone out right say it, hell the only way you could be any louder is if you said, hey stubby burn in hell you homophobic bastard.
Solmu
Solmu on Nov 30 '05 at 1:31pm
Stubby, I don't need to pretend anything. Your aggresive language makes it obvious that you are exactly the kind of person I was referring to - it's totally uncalled for based on my one non-specific comment. I don't know if you're A) Insane, B) Trolling, or C) Joking. Whichever it is, I don't like you. You clearly don't like me. Oh well.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. A couple of nice gender specific tees have been printed:

I haven't submitted any photos. I guess I don't want free money.

All about me

Well let’s see… I live in the UK – I’m originally from Lancashire, England but have lived in Cardiff, Wales for the past 12 years. I work at a Uni here Mon-Thurs and paint/write short stories the rest of the time, amongst other things. I can’t use any creative computer packages so it’s not likely that I’ll be submitting anything anytime soon! I’m just happy to buy the wonderful tees that go on sale here (addictive, isn’t it?!)

Musically, I'm currently obsessed with Goldfrapp and I'm also quite partial to Zero 7 and Bjork. I like a lot of house music (particularly the deep, soulful stuff), downtempo, chilled grooves and some jazz.

Will add some more photos soon…
