I gave you a 5 and a buy for that shirt, its sick, if they print it, and I have any extra cash (between jobs right now) I will definatly get it off here.

This is going to give us all something to strive to for a long time to come I think. This won't be 'dethroned' for at least as long as 'flowers in the attack' was the top score, and that was about 2 years.

I still can't decide if I like your design or Brad Holland's original version better. Maybe yours, but I wish that the top design on this site was an original composition. It would be like if the American Film Institute said that the greatest film of all time was the Gus Van Sant remake of "Psycho".

You have some really great illustrations on your site. It would be nice to see you submit some original designs with that level of quality.

Under Browse Submissions:
Select Only: Designs Completed Scoring
Make sure the keyword is blank.
Then search. This gives you a list of the shirts that have completed scoring in the order that they scored from highest to lowest.

if you go to browse submissions, uncheck Designs In The Running and check Designs That Have Completed Scoring then it lists them highest score first :)

I agree man. I don't come close to Holland, but thanks. If I could submit paintings, I would. It is just a tee so an entirely different medium. I would never submit this to a magazine or anything. I would probably be blacklisted in that situation and lose my reps. I mentioned Holland in my description, so as you know, I didn't have any ill intentions. Conceptually, it was a way to get a shirt with the brilliance of Holland, my favorite illustrator. Basically, the same as Darth, the former highest vote. I believe a lot of people felt the same way and just voted on a shirt they would like to buy. On the contrary, there are many aspects that make my graphic unique, but by no means in comparison with Holland.

Has At At Boo Boo been printed? I like the design, the colors just don't work well for me.

Sorry, now I'm just being a smart ass...

I'm probably in the vast minority...in fact, I think I'm alone...in thinking that the shirt is too much of a rip of Hollands piece. Your other subs were really interesting and you're obviously a terrific illustrator with tons of talent and experience, but just because this is a different medium doesn't give any credence to the argument that it's okay to copy a hero's work almost verbatim. Yea, it's a different style, but Holland did the part that counts. And where Glennz's Darth design is a creative parody of a known cultural icon, yours is a duplicate of a the idea and layout of a great illustrator's work without changing it a bit.

That being said, the idea does go back thousands of years, from the Tales of 1001 Arabian Nights, so not even Brad Holland originated it, but you only admitted to copying Holland.

Congratz on the highest score, but I'm disappointed (like I said, I'm probably alone in this) that you are getting credit for it and not Brad Holland.

I kinda agree with you, grayehound. The only problem I really have is that most of the people who voted didn't really understand the extent of the Holland reference. People will accuse you all day of ripping someone else off, saying "that looks too much like so and so", but when something really is referenced from another work, they fail to see it. I think this shirt design looks great, but I think that probably 90% of the voters didn't catch the fact that it is a remake.

I also agree with grayehound. It is well executed, but the concept is someone else's idea. I don't think that "Holland-esque" was quite fair enough a representation of the piece. It's one thing to do something in a person's style, for example several of the IFC submissions are very "Miller-esque," but that's not really what you've done here. I do really feel that you are taking credit for Holland's creativity in this instance simply because as grayehound said few people saw the connection. To be fair as well, the stand-up thing to do would have been to link the original image.

For me a piece is a question of concept and execution. In many cases here at Threadless there is a great concept with poor execution. In this case the execution is very much yours whereas the concept is not. In that vein I don't think that it should be printed.

Undoubtedly it will however, and in any case I congradulate you in succeeding where I have not.

Like lots of others, I gave you a 5 and $ for it. I adore your design.

I really like the idea/design...possibly because it's interesting and somehow familar. I can't recall where I've come across it before, but none the less, I really like your execution of it. I just checked out Holland's version of it and honestly, it's not my style. And although the idea may not have been yours, it is however, your idea to put this concept on a shirt. Since we are designing graphics for shirts, we have to take into account the wearablity of the image. And as Mr. Domino mentioned, sometimes great concepts have poor executions. I guess what I'm saying is, if Holland's image was on a shirt, I wouldn't wear it.

i thought the design was very creative and very nicely executed but after learning and seeing holland's painting... i don't think it would be fair to have it printed. i agree with grayehound. sorry

I would fucking wear holland's design on my shirt. It's really great. I hope a lot of y'all become more familiar with his stuff, because he truly is really clever. It's no wonder people responded so well to this design. I really hete that though. I spend so much time trying to be original just to have something like this held in high regards. I really wouldn't like if it was printed.

Yeah the Holland idea is definitely there, but if you look at it as a Tee design fit for fabric, there aren't too many visually and technically as good as this one in the recent submissions, and the Holland print is unprintable anyway :)

So Andy, if you wouldn't submit this to a magazine, why is it okay to submit it here? Both use the art for sales and both are bound by the same sort of agreements. If I hired an illustrator (a weekly thing for me) and they turned back a sketch I immediatly recognized as the layout of someone else, I'd tell them to go back and do it again on their own. There's such thing as quoting and parody, but this isn't either.

In terms of legality/copyright...in my opinion, this piece would be safe from that. The ball-park quantification of change necessary to avoid copyright infringement is usually around 10%. This is definitely 10% different than the original. That being said, it's definitely disappointing knowing how heavily this submission borrowed from the original in terms of the "message" of the piece. After being on this site for about a month and a half, it seems that, over-all, peoples opinions of a piece are weighted 60% towards the meaning/message, 35% to the visual image, and 5% towards the artist. I think that's why people are so disappointed in this. A lot of folks seem to like all of the Che Guevara re-mixes, and most of those are a whole lot more like the original than this one is. But we all know that, so it's easier to handle. I like the piece, but I'm disappointed that the message was "borrowed".
