It seems like some people are just naturally good at folding things and straightening things up and putting that extra polish on the organization of their bric-a-brac. When I was younger, I thought it was a girl thing, because other girls always had good handwriting, folded their notes neater, and had perfect poufy bangs. I feel like I've always been sloppy in every one of these aspects. Even when I try, I don't do neatness well. Like I try folding towels the way my mom taught me when I was little and somehow they always end up in big, blobby burrito rolls. If I try to iron a shirt, I'll think I have it perfect only to find that I've ironed a gigantic crease across the back. And so on...

So: Are you neat? Can neatness be learned? How can I learn it?

My natural state is chaotic and messy (but not dirty, there's a difference), but when I get my neat on, I do it real good.

I have become more willing to toss things out as I've gotten older. I think I still have way too much stuff, though. Way too many hobbies/collections.

I like neatness, but never have enough room for all of my junk, so neatly stacked piles of stuff are my reality.

And no matter how hard I try, I just cannot fold fitted sheets without them looking like the burrito blobs, lol
lemonalle
lemonalle on Aug 03 '11 at 11:44am
My mom will come visit and I'll leave the room for 15 minutes and when I get back everything will be tidied up. And then I won't be able to find anything.
lemonalle
lemonalle on Aug 03 '11 at 11:45am
I can't even make neat stacks. They're all leaning towers.

Fitted sheets are the bane of my existence!

fitted sheets - don't use the elastic edge of your sheet as the corner. Grab like 8 inches in, then fold. :)

Sometimes I like to imagine that God creates people like teenage boys create Dungeons and Dragons characters. You have so many points and you get to spread them out across different qualities. So, while I am high in charisma, I had to sacrifice my thieving abilities. Or, like, substitute smarts and neatness.

I also lack the neatness gene :(

I thought it might develop as I got older, but no joy so far.

I find it's just practice. Like, real practice, not half assed "I can't do this so why REALLY try" type practice.
lemonalle
lemonalle on Aug 03 '11 at 12:16pm

i probably do lack practice. i actually do often feel like "i can't do it right anyway."
lemonalle
lemonalle on Aug 03 '11 at 12:17pm
as for the stacking, though, there's part of me that likes having everything "accessible". i want to be able to "see" everything that i think i'll need so i don't want to put it away.

As long as you recognize it and try to overcome it, you will start to get better and, thankfully enough, faster. One neatness tip. Rather than shuttle back and forth for each out of place thing in a room, throw all out of place things in each room into a laundry basket. Then circle round back to each room and take each thing that belongs in THAT room out of the basket and put it away. Huge time saver.

I think at least part of it is that I don't reeeeallyyyyy care all that much.

hahaha, I am the queen of doing that. When I'm trying to clean I walk in and out of rooms so many times that I forget what I'm doing and start reading something or making a sandwich.

my fiancee completely lacks it, i mean i'm not great but he perpetually leaves the lids off of things, (peanut butter, olive oil, bottles of water, booze) and it drives me mental. and he has socks all over the house.
lemonalle
lemonalle on Aug 03 '11 at 12:26pm
the lid thing would drive me crazy. i'm pretty good at food stuff. but i do have shoes all over the house. like in rooms that don't even make sense.

Oh man. I always have shoes everywhere. Again with the lack of space thing - it's a pain to put them away because the shoe holder thingy in my closet is already overflowing.

i don't mind that sort of thing because i feel "cozy". haha. i don't like seeing dust though. i dust around my stacks. and under them when i'm feeling particularly enterprising.

That's a pretty good sum up for me. I am not good at maintenance cleaning, other than the kitchen- especially dishes. Generally, I have to do those and the counters everyday or else I get grouchy. I like waiting until I see something is dirty so then when I clean, it feels like a huge accomplishment.

In regards to sheets, I have gotten pretty good at folding- even the fitted one which used to be a blobby burrito roll as you say. But I found this video... something like this...

YES! Going through photos and throwing out ones where you or anyone you care about looks bad will change your life.

But who has photos anymore right?! Ha, what an old lady I am!

i have boxes of photos that i haven't actually looked at in years. i bet if i pulled them out i'd end up just looking at them and leaving them piled all over the place instead of getting rid of them. i should get some photo albums. i used to love to go through photo albums.

I'm a total piler/stacker myself. At school, the rest of the teachers give me a hard time because my classroom can often resemble some kind of disaster zone on my desk and counter space. However, I also have what I like to call a 'photographic mess memory' because I always know EXACTLY where something is

Another teacher will come in asking for a specific piece of paper/memo/teaching tool and I will grab it from the middle of a pile that is stacked on another pile under some books without even have to pause or think about where something is.

It's embarrassing, sometimes, because I can never seem to get a handle on the piles, but every time I try to organize or clean up, I lose things, and never find them again.

I always have huge, grand plans for getting organized, but it usually involves a complete overhaul of the current system, which usually results in everything in the room being dumped in the middle, and then sorted into the new system. Which ALWAYS results in me getting distracted and playing with stuff that I find that I forgot I had and then me changing the organizational system halfway through setting it up.

Too many ideas, not enough concentration.

Also, if this organizational system revamp is happening in the bedroom, it always (ALWAYS) ends up with me sitting in a pile of junk on my bed trying on every outfit/combination of clothing in the closet, and not actually cleaning anything up at all.

I can relate to all of that so hard. When I was teaching, the other teachers gave me a hard time because my desk was always in a gigantic state of disrepair. It didn't help that my desk was right next to the "lounging" area of the faculty lounge. I never really worked at my desk, though... I just stuck things there.
