Does anyone listen to the radio anymore? I have to listen to the radio in my car a lot because I'm forgetful and lazy when it comes to recharging my iPod. Anyway, radio stations generally stink rotten eggs but I do appreciate two things about radio listenin':

* I get to listen to (or am forced to listen to) stuff I normally wouldn't.
* There's something serendipitous about chancing upon a good song on the radio, be it something old or new. It's a lot more exciting to listen to a stellar tune when it's played for you than when you just punch it up on your own. Kind of like how a sandwich is much more delicious when someone else makes it for you.

So now I will list some songs I've heard on the radio recently that were awesome:

* "Star Man" by David Bowie
* "If You Leave" by OMD
* That mashup of "Born This Way" and "Express Yourself"

And I will list artists who I think are lazy and tedious:
* Nicki Minaj

And ones who have sort of won over my heart:
* Katy Perry
* Rihanna

Ke$ha's songs all sound the same to me, and by that I mean fucking terrible.

ZOMG LEMONZ

Also, I have the good fortune of having a listener supported radio station in Milwaukee that is amazing and plays all sorts of everything awesome. Tis all I listen to in the auto

There is actually a mash-up of Born This Way and Express Yourself? Does it work? Whenever people try and tell me this song sounds just like that song my response is always "I'll believe it when I hear it in a mash-up."

[Insert comment from Randyotterdick about how gay I am here.]

I never listen to the radio any more because I don't drive. I think I'm becoming an old man and this is the point where I just draw a line under all my favourite bands and albums and become completely out of touch with what the youth are listening to these days and start shaking my fist when they drive by in their cars with the volume up and telling everyone how much better music was in my day.

Radio stations in Johnson City:

-Country
-Gospel
-Old Gospel
-CRAZY Gospel
-Country
-Country
-Yep, country
-Classic Rock

I mostly listen to the two classic rock stations or my ipod.

I usually listen to classic rock when I listen: WLUP the LOOP in Chicago, and then Q101.1, which is basically classic alternative rock anymore. So radio doesn't really broaden my horizons. It's usually good for finding out about shows that for whatever reason aren't advertised in the paper.

The classic rock stations in my city keep getting rebranded as top 40, which means they play the same ten songs over and over and over again. There's one station that plays classic pop and rock, but I can't sit through it without hearing that OMD song at least once. It gives me the heaving fantods, I hate it so much.

I forgot to add Ke$ha to the won-my-♥ list. I'm a little embarrassed for myself.

STEVEO! We have a pretty nice college station now from Towson but sometimes they play dumb boring roots rock/hippie stuff. We have an Annapolis station that's pretty cool but they sometimes suffer from the same problem. They did play me that Bowie this morning, though.

Born This Way/Express Yourself is like both a joke and an awesome mashup, which I appreciate.

Haha, CRAZY gospel!

You hate OMD? :-(

That song is my favorite part of Pretty in Pink.

I've always hated that song. I can't explain why it rubs me the wrong way in such a bad way, but it does.

It makes me feel all warm and nostalgic, in the same way as Human League's "Don't You Want Me".

That does look like an awesome station!

103.1 -- it's actually right on the main street, on the top floor of this neat gift shop

I just realized that that station is streamable, but it won't work on my computer because of the proxy settings or something. :-/

Nicki Minaj is lazy/tedious???

For some reason there are a few 90's songs that get played a lot on different stations here.
-Mary J Blige "No More Drama"
-Destiny's Child "Jumpin, Jumpin"

Those are the two that I hear almost weekly. Very strange.

I find her rhymes very lazy, like there's no craft to them. It's just random stuff that sounds like it's supposed to be vaguely clever. And then just some godawful stuff: "Cher... you used to be here now you're gone, Nair!"? And this Nicki/Britney/Ke$ha remix... the latter two songs are (naturally) about going out/having fun/dancing. Then Nicki slaps herself on top of it with a few half-assed verses about "haters"? She's all vocal tics with no substance. She needs an editor or a ghost writer.

/my humble opinion

Also, when she says "put your number twos in the air" I can't help but think of a bunch of people proudly waving their feces around.
mgill52
mgill52 on Jun 16 '11 at 3:31pm
i think the number twos is a joke in reference to poop since its preceded by "I sh**ted on em" which isn't proper english...:) Is that song on the radio? I have never heard it before.

Her verse on that Britney remix isn't my favorite.

Have you heard her verse in Kanye's "Monster" or Super Bass? It is pretty dang catchy.

If you could turn back time, Cher
You used the be here but now you gone ,Nair

thats a pretty awesome line. I think its directed at Lil Kim. They have had a pretty big beef.

I actually don't have a radio in my car. lol.. I think the last time it had a radio was sometime in the 80's since the dash was cut to fit a cassette radio unit :P

That said I usually run Pandora or Slacker Radio on my phone through an amp jack into the speaker. I love it cause I can set a station based on a band I like and then I get the trill almost like a radio of sometimes hearing something new that I've never heard before.

Honestly, I'd rather listen to nothing than regular radio. But if I had to choose I guess I can tolerate KROQ sometimes

Since I got my car a few years ago with Sirius installed, I don't really listen to regular radio anymore. Except for when I return home to the Philadelphia area and then I listen to XPN, the public radio station from UPenn. A variety of music. Some good, some not. But mostly good.

i haven't had a radio in ten years. we bought this house and my car around the same time and the car has no antenna and the stereo in the house never got good reception here. as a result i have no idea what's happened in the world of music for the past decade.

They do play that song quite a lot on one of our stations. I knew the reference was there but I can't imagine she wanted to evoke the image of people brandishing their poops. And if she did, she should've gone balls out with it and included some flinging too.

I have to admit that I've really only heard her album tracks. I've heard that she's done better work guesting on other tracks. I'll have to give them a listen.

I used to have XM, which I loved but someone ripped out my antenna. It was hard to adjust to radio with commercials again.

I feel that way about most big "rock" bands now, taz. Whenever someone mentions Incubus or Linkin Park or anything of that ilk (and I know those bands aren't "new" but that kind of demonstrates how out of touch I am), I think a big question mark appears over my head.

I concur on the radio and sandwich connection.

For but a brief moment, my city actually had an 80's station. I thought I had died and gone to radio heaven. But now it's another country station (GAH!). Big bummer.

I am forced to listen to the radio at my gym which is at the most twice a week. I usually don't know what I'm hearing but most of it makes me want to yell profanities. A song I kept hearing that I thought could be used in torture camps turned out to be a Katy Perry song. Are we hearing the same person? :)

Also whatever genius came up with the Born This Way/Express Yourself mashup? What a stretch of the imagination!

oh! I did hear something I liked the other day. Turns out it was a JT song. My husband told me so. I think he secretly loves to listen to popular radio.

I haven't actively listened to the radio for probably 20 years although it'll generally be on if we go anywhere by car, which we rarely do.

I think it's because there weren't really any readily available stations in the UK that played stuff I like. Here though we have FM4 which is pretty good and in English for the most part.
