I read about this sound that is played in certain areas to keep teenagers from loitering... it's a high-pitched buzzing sound that apparently only young people can hear, but I can hear it too. That makes me feel good about being old today.

Can you hear it?

I can also tell if a TV is on in a room even if the picture isn't showing (for example, if the cable is turned off) by the sound that it makes but most of the people around me don't know what I'm talking about.

Yeah I can hear it. I also know what you're talking about when the tv is on standby, it's perfectly normal. It's good to know that my eyesight may be crap, but at least I can hear everything.

Oh man, I HATE the TV sound. My parents tend to turn off the cable receiver box thing but leave the TV on. It drives me nuts.

is it just high-pitched sounds or do you have trouble hearing things in general?
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Nov 04 '09 at 11:04am
my ears are way too sensitive- I take metal smithing class and i'm the only one who still cringes using the belt sander...

it hurts your teeth cuz its actually moving them...
Tonteau
   Tonteau on Nov 04 '09 at 11:06am
Nah, I think I hear ok in general. I played a lot of gigs in my tees/early twenties, maybe that damaged them. I never used protection, how foolish! Use protection, kids. I don't listen to much loud stuff, now, though.

My friend plays in a band professionally and he uses specially moulded earplugs they cost £120, well worth it when I think about it.

metal-smithing class?!!!

tonteau was a rock star! we have to hold on to these little tidbits when they come up. dom says he's lost some of his hearing too due to the shows he's played.

When I was younger, I thought being able to tell that a TV was on without seeing it was my super power.

Also, some school kids in Asia developed a ring tone that's set to a frequency only they can hear, but their teacher can't. They were able to cheat off of tests with this.
lemonalle
lemonalle on Nov 04 '09 at 12:23pm
upside-down u is a math symbol called an intersection. it stands for commonalities between sets:

The intersection of two sets A and B is denoted by ∩:
{a, b} ∩ {b, c} = {b}
