Morbid artwork, controversial in itself, added with a large splash of copyright problems times 10 "oh snap!". I'm not trying to feed on other people's misery, but this is god send. God send. I've been reading all the comments for the blogs and now I can't resist it anymore. I'm a freelance writer and this is a killer story. And I really, really, really need to write it, whatever the story turns out to be.

So can I do it? I'll take on any angle and exploit every possible way. I'll pitch it to any publication. I'll write it on spec. I'll beg Threadless to feature it somewhere on the website, even just to clear up the accusations.

And even if this article ends up being shit and I make a big deal out of nothing and completely embarrass myself, at least I won't feel terrible for letting this opportunity slip through my hands. Okay. I'm being a little overdramatic. But this is such great material!

I promise you guys will be the first to read it when (or if) I get it done. I'll have to wait until the mystery is completely unveiled, of course, but I'm willing to do some snopping of my own. It'll be amazing. Pultizer prize material. Or whatever. Do I have your quotes and interviews and links, then?

brokennightmare :

i'm sure threadless are usually all to happy to pimp their threadless sight all over teh media...however do u really think this story (oh ooops r bad we didn't know we were printing someone's copyrighted material) is really a story they are going to be stoked to spread both far and wide???

it seems to me this could be a near fatal flaw in an otherwise brillant business idea: but how to deal with non-original artwork submitted? it seems apparent that the odds that they can 100% check each piece for copyright problems are quite small indeed.... so what happens if they do / have?? printed an infringing work are they setting themselves up for some lawsuit fun?

additionally what is the ramifications in this particualar case of the "artist" being underage... who signed off to give them permission to print (swp's? a minor??? or swp's parents?) if it was the minor (someone correct me if i'm wrong) any contract with her may not be binding??? as minors cannot enter into many legal contracts. if it was her parents are they potentially liable if the work if infringment?

blah blah blah...anyway seriously if it was me this is one story I would want to go teh fuck away...not one i'd want to go outta my way to have printed in the new yorker or wired or whatnot.

if this ends up on somethingawful, I will laugh myself stupid.

In seriousness-- it could make a decent article concerning copyright, and such. I am interested in seeing what becomes of it.

I'm with maddingo... this is not a good idea

that said shimala...

of course should he decide to write a story about it, from a 1st amendment point of view there is not much y'all could do about it? of course whether threadless.com cooperated w/ the story is another question? indeed?

additionally i'm sure that y'all would like this whole thing to go away.... but since many here seem to be quite fascinated by the "scandal" what r y'all going to do when/if you figure out what happened?

I could understand not wanting to say if y'all figure out it was a ripoff but on the other hand the speculation seems likely to continue for sometime if the facts are not laid bare?

anyway....in all honesty i'm glad it's not really my problem sorry y'all have to deal with it whatever the 'truth' of the situation is indeed.

it's a good story to tell your artist friends, and one for the threadless 'oops!' files, but yeah, i dunno if J.Jonah Jameson will want to publish it.
tie some political corruption in and you might have something.

What's the fascination with this? Copyright infringement is one of the most common, mundane crimes there is. It's a pretty safe bet that all of you have done it one time or another. Copying books, pirating software and the like. Maybe it's more the fact that you feel duped that keeps you coming back to this, but seriously: Drop it already. This is getting embarrassing in more than one way.

shimala- why is the story not a good idea? because you work for threadless? all the things mandingo pointed out- that's what does make this interesting. I'm sure a lot of the artists here are curious about what the consequences are for complete rip-offs.

the first time I heard of threadless, someone forwarded an article to me from the New York Times or somewhere talking about the brilliant new marketing strategy (having customers vote on what gets produced.). why should threadless only get good publicity? you cant just print whatever you want & profit from it & then ask everyone to politely not care when you screw up. why shouldn't it be embarrassing. there needs to be more discussion about copyright & doing business on the internet.

Having said that...the person asking this question is 15? Good luck with that pulizter material, I hope you do better work than some other teens around here.
