(I know there are other companies that make tablets besides Wacom but don't know the names.)I just got one for x-mas, and I guess it takes awhile to get used to. I'm pretty good at drawing the old-fashioned way.

Anyone have any tips for me? Also was wondering what method people prefer for making illustrations--scanning drawings, tracing clip art or similar, or completely freehand drawing, or using a tablet?

thanks peeps!

Draw on paper, scan, and rebuild in Illustrator. I can't live without my Wacom.

the best tip i can give is just keep using it and playing with the settings until you find the right sensitivities and everything. i just got mine a few weeks ago. it was really weird at first, but i'm pretty used to it by now.

so, andyg, you probably learned to draw the old-fashioned way first?

Svetlana on Dec 27 '06 at 12:09am
i just started using it tonight and figured out some cool stuff. it's pretty close to the real thing. i was kinda surprised. it may depend on the type of brushes used.

Yeah, there's nothing like drawing on paper. But I use my Wacom for everything after that. Drawing with a mouse is like drawing with a bar of soap.

don't forget that you can adjust settings for both the tablet itself and the individual programs you use. and you can also program the buttons for different programs as well.

"Drawing with a mouse is like drawing with a bar of soap."

That's the best way I've ever heard that summarised. Spot on.

there should be a Wacom folder in your start menu with a Tablet Properties application (that's what mine is called at least)

Does anyone know if the different nibs actually make a difference? I haven't bothered trying any other ones yet :-p

A number of people I've talked to tape a piece of paper over the tablet, that way you have a little resistance like with analog pencil/paper drawing, instead of the slick tablet surface.

Other people hate that, so it's not for everyone, but certainly worth a try.

How much did your tablet cost? And what size do you have. Cause I am trying to save some money for a 6x8 wacom tablet.

Mine's 6x11. I'm not sure how much it was since it was a x-mas gift from my boyfriend, but I have a feeling he got it on eBay. He's an ebayaholic.

I'm going to try the nibs out now. (heh heh, nibs, heh...)

I have the itty-bitty 4x5 one, which is perfect for me since i draw small. I love it to bits. My best tip, in getting used to it quickly is this : hide the mouse that comes with it.

(If that's not already done, of course.)

That way even doing random stuff, you're practicing and getting a better hang of it.

Well apparently the extra nibs are just for when your current nib gets worn out... when it's a nubby nib... And if you want to change them out it actually says in the user's manual to use tweezers to pull out the nib and I guess you have to force the other one in somehow?!? Sounds like a frustrating task. I'll pass on all the nibular manipulation, thanks.

But I'm getting better at using this! I wrote this whole thing with the pen! (not.)

Spacesick-- you should drink something better than PBR. Guinness?

I have an intuos2 6x8, but I barely use it because I don't have time, illustrator, or a decent edition of photoshop. I've used it for some freehand stuff and messing with photographs, tho, and it's way better than a mouse.
