Has anyone else seen al gore’s movie? I’m convinced that we could see the end of humanity within our lifetime. If you haven’t already, go see it. There’s a political undertone of course, but for the most part you’ll be shocked by the science/facts he presents.

http://www.climatecrisis.org

I told my co-workers about it and one of them started making fun of global warming. I said “Please don’t talk about it like that cause it’s an important issue to me,” to which he replied that he has the right to make fun of whomever and whatever he likes. I guess that’s why they tell us not to talk politics at work.

he's also fatter. except for girls, there tends to be a fat-to-relaxed ration in people.

nah, no joke.

the science does show a climatic pattern occurring. undoubtedly.

but this has been going on longer than all their seismic counters and scales have been around.

this is only one small part of the entire sphere.

Whole Grains
Whole Grains on Jun 14 '06 at 5:27pm
that's not true. Changes are occuring more dramtically within the past 40 years, more so then they ever have in the past 600,000 years. you shuold go see the movie, then come back here so we can chat about it.

Again, I'm not disputing the scientific data, per se.

What are they even comparing our way of life too/against? Do the scientist talk of what started certain climatic shifts in history? anyway, there is a very very large, global encompassing political agenda behind the making of this movie. it's not republican v democrat or environmental v corporation. it's about fear and the imposition on your reality.

^Somebody else said to me, and I was wandering if the movie is really that crappy looking. I haven't seen previews of it so I have no idea. I'm waiting for a pirated copy of it to leak on the internet.
jackanapes
jackanapes on Jun 14 '06 at 5:33pm
i really try not to worry about it. there's nothing i as an individual can do, really, except bitch and moan and throw stuff at people in SUV's. instead, i've designed a rocket that will take me and others to the mars, which we will terraform and turn into a hippie commune utopia, minus all the oils and moustaches. keep the tied-dyed shirts though. i'd bet they'd look rad on a martian landscape. it'd be like the cover to some long-lost hawkwind album.

go see the movie. that's all i'm sayin', yo

...or wait till it comes out on video, if you must
Whole Grains
Whole Grains on Jun 15 '06 at 11:22am
hmm, is it weird to still say 'come out on video'?
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on Jun 15 '06 at 11:24am
it's not weird to call it video.

everything is video, unless it's shot on film :)

also, i'll see the movie for chrissakes.

but bc you've seen the movie, you still haven't really negated anything i've said; you only retort, see the movie. why?
Whole Grains
Whole Grains on Jun 15 '06 at 11:50am
i haven't really retorted because 1) by nature i'm not very good at debating issues and 2) i've had this discussion with quite a few other people already and it's sort of wearing down on me. However, in answer to your question

what are they comparing our way of life to/against

The best I can answer is they’re comparing our way of life to how life has been lived on earth for the past 600,000 years or so. They’re able to form a strong correlation between the amount of carbon emissions that we’re sending in the air toady and the dramatically rising global temperature of the earth. By drilling out ice cores, they can measure the carbon that was present in the air for thousands of years past, and have found that there’s more carbon today then ever before.

do the scientists talk of certain climatic shifts in history

yes they do, and again they have proven that there has never been such a dramatic change, espeically in terms of the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Not only have carbon emissions never been this high, but the climate is changing at an exponentially faster rate then it ever has as far as they can trace back. The changes taking place do not fit the pattern of any naturally occuring climatic shifts that have happened in the past.

You say it’s about fear and it’s imposition on reality. Yes, it did leave me afraid, but only because it opened my eyes to what the reality really is. I think we have to be shocked into awareness this way, so we can act before it’s too late to reverse the impact we’ve made.

shirtflirt
shirtflirt on Jun 15 '06 at 11:56am
really.

you're glad they did?

i'm sure the movies so full of scientific data that it makes your head spin.

do they talk about windfarms and such that can help with the excess carbon dioxide?

alternatives and such?
Whole Grains
Whole Grains on Jun 15 '06 at 12:04pm
what's shocking to me is that this scientfic data has been available for so long, yet has been ignored by many because society has already formed the minset that global warming is just an extreme liberal theory. I am very, very glad I saw this movie and now have the privellege of being aware of what's going on in the world, and how serious an issue it is. Yes they do talk about ways to help towards the end. This message would obviously be useless if they didn't offer ways to solve the problem.

it would be pretty cool if threadless did some sort of loves compeition to raise awareness of the issue
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on Jun 15 '06 at 12:17pm
so if this datas been around for so long, why is it coming out now?

and, despite all this data, global warming is still a theory.

people have talked about this since the 80s, and now you find it important bc al gore said so?

I plan to see it, there aren't many theatres here in Ky that show non-blockbusters so I have to travel to the closest bigger city to see anything good. I saw Thank You for Not Smoking & A Prarie Home Companion last weekend and they were handing out fliers and buttons for The Truth. Its a bit ironic that I have to drive in my car, which is contributing to global warming, about 40 minutes away to see a movie about stopping global warming. Sadly where I live there is bascially no way to get out of riding in cars, it would take hours and hours just to get to the edge of town by bike, there is no bus system, and there are no friendly neighbors to carpool with on little dead end roads.
