I know Threadless doesn't normally mark customs packages as "gifts" but i want to place an order (7-8) shirts and send them to my dad and brother and sister that live out of town. I want them to be christmas gifts and it would suck if they had to pay a gagillion $ for customs. What's the deal in this case?

You'll probably just want to e-mail their customer service -- there's no guarantee that they'll see this blog to help you.

Note that even for gifts, the limit is $60 in Canada. You might have to split your order.

I'd like to know about this though too. It'd suck to send someone a nice package and they have to pay to get it (which has happened to me).

i'd say make a good american friend and have the shirts sent to the a.f. and have the a.f. send the shirts.

I should clarify: the value of a gift cannot be more than $60. If it's more than that, it gets taxed (though I'm not sure if that's on the amount over $60 or the full amount).

Ship them to yourself, pay the customs, ship them to dad.

Suck to pay for all that, but Threadless won't declare items as gifts.

Maybe its just me, but I've ordered several packages which I asked to be sent as gifts. They all arrived with the "other" box ticked and a full invoice inside stating the price of each shirt.

I think you should apprehend the package first, remove the offending invoices, and then resend the package and hope it wont arrive after xmas.

So eky, did you get taxed?

I want to ask since it sucks paying SO much here... but I'm afraid threadless will get mad. :(

I've been taxed on a few occasions (in the UK, minimum charge is £8something).

But I've gotten wise to it. Even though I tick the 'gift' box I still order under the customs tax band. Therefore avoiding the customs.

If you want to make large orders, pay really cheap postage and get away with not paying extra on tax, you'll have to be really lucky, sorry fella.

As tax is concerned, I think it depends where you are in the world, and how nice your post office is (alternatively, how much the people working there do not care about their jobs). As Maija says $60 is the limit for things marked as gifts, sometimes this includes postage, sometimes not. If the package is ticked as 'other', sometimes it will be treated as a gift ($60) sometimes not.

In summery: Postage lottery.

I just mentioned about getting the invoice sent with the order for anyone else reading this blog that actually wants to make an order with threadless and get it sent straight to a friend/relative. Just give you guys a heads up. Maybe its just me this happens to, but you never know.
