I have questions.

I used indexhibit to build my website and I like it. I know a lot of other people have used it too and others that have customized their own html to build a similar layout. (Navigation on the left. Artwork on the right)

mine - www.jublin.com

But I've always had a huge issue trying to incorporate a "news" section to my site. Somewhere I could post little blurbs and updates and people could comment. I tried to add a blogger page, but the page gets all screwed up because my indexhibit html is customized so heavily. (Looks OK on some computers, but it gets an extra scrollbar on most, including mine)

Do you have a NEWS section on your site? A tumblr? Wordpress? Want to share what you GOT?

I hate having to update it... laziness.

I'm not important enough to have a news section.

Here's mine. Built with Cargo, which was great for me, given that I hate coding. It's pretty barebones, but it meets my needs for right now.

I am definitely not important enough for a News section.

I went the route of creating a template. For each new post I copy & paste a section of html and change out the image urls / text. The only other thing I have to do is add another link to the navigation section. So, it's a few steps but not too bad. Mine, however, does not include a way to comment.

you guys are important enough in my eyes to have a news section. i believe in you!

so did you build yours from the ground up, Matt?

NiNTH WHEEL on Jun 18 '11 at 4:53pm
Yes, I did. It isn't complicated enough that it was too much of a headache to do that way and allowed for complete control for how I wanted it to look. Still a bit of a work in progress, though, as I've only had it live for about a month.

I use tumblr for my news but I've styled it to match my web site so that it looks pretty much the same site (with a few links changed here and there).

my news page

I use static HTML and then take it copy and paste it and push it to an RSS feed with this program called "feeder" (mac osx). Only deal is that you need a blog for it in order for that program to work, and the only blog it services are blogs with the same backend as blogger and not tumblr.

Anyway. I tie the RSS feed on multiple links on the site: you can get to it through the RSS icon in your browser window, as well as the RSS icon link on the news page. Feeder dumps the news into an rss file in my site root, as well as a copy to my blog.

Kind of ghetto, but it gets the job done. If I was more savvy I'd pull the RSS feed that's embedded on my site into the news feed on my static page saving a step.

I'd suggest looking into a portfolio service that provides a newsfeed/RSS feed if you're not hip to updating it manually like I do. Cargo collective, wordpress to name a few.

Or just get someone who's HTML savvy to style your blog so it looks more like your portfolio without the scroll bars.

I don't really have a website, but I love yours Jublin, especially the traditional artwork section. Your stuff is amazing.

I literally just put up a brand new one(like 5 minutes ago). I ripped off the index exhibit style but built it in dreamweaver. I also went "old school" complete with an enter page and animated gifs–but with a new twist.

I've been meaning to do NEWS and a BLOG and a FACEBOOK and now a TUMBLR for a while now.... so I'm gonna watch blog to hopefully learn some tricks.

yeah sweet site!! and thanks toopersent :)

i wish i was a bit more knowledgeable in building sites, but it's kind of overwhelming. It's like a blackhole of html trying to learn one thing then the next and the next. Wish i had more time in the day to mess with that stuff.

thanks dude!

yeah, I had this required class in college called "web design for graphic designers", it was basically like 'ok, you idiots won't be able to learn html, but we'll teach you dreamweaver and photoshop slicing'.

But besides that, my copy of dreamweaver classroom in a book has been an invaluable resource for figuring out how to do stuff–I've been rocking that piece for 5 years now

I need to redesign my site so badly.
I tried recently to learn Dreamweaver and css through lynda.com and
I just couldn't stay with it. I have a cargo site, but I could only customize it so much with what i know.

I'm currently hand-coding my own site + css (nuts, I know).

Still, I consider getting one of these fancy tumblr templates and iframe the whole tumblr into my site as blog.

Whatever Justin. Whatever

I hand coded my website, but that doesn't mean anything. It's in dire need of an upgrade. And also in dire need of stuff to actually update it with.

i use squarespace.com

my site isnt grand, but its easy use and to update. and can do news like posts?

they have lots of page templates and make it pretty easy to customize the layouts and styles. i was able to switch my site over and get up and running with them pretty quickly. i could probably do more with it if i took some time? they have different levels of their services you can buy, im using the most basic option.

Yeah, I'm decent at Flash, I freelanced as a flash production artist for a bit, but got out of it when the action scripting got too difficult.

You've inspired me to pick Dreamweaver back up and create a site of the same quality of your own. I wish I could say I could help you with flash, but we are probably around the same level.

I used for the back end of mine wordpress, then created a template for the site and works great, I have the news section that I put there not so long a go and could be used more, I still need to find time to update my work:

ivanrodero.com

If you have the css, php skills and patience I totally recommend wordpress.

Hi guys,

Some great sites there.

I have a splash page I put together in dreamweaver but then use wordpress for the rest.
I like the fact that with wordpress you can catogorise your work and then have links to those catagories simply and easilly. I wish they had a theme that I was happy with though. The really minimal ones (which I would prefer) don't seem to have the funtionality I want.

Jublin, to answer your original question, if you used wordpress you could simply add a tabbed page for news.

you're the NERD!

i've given up on trying to fix the NEWS section. I like indexhibit and don't want to start fresh. It just does a terrible job trying to incorporate other sites/blogs into it's frames.

What I should do is basically have my NEWS link to a completely separate window that is my blog and stop trying to include it in the same page.
