hey i finally started putting together a real website. It's nothing special, just a simple way to access a handful of my artwork.

It's still in test mode so some things don't work and there's a bunch of stuff I couldn't figure out how to do. But you can download my print portfolio in PDF form. Tell me what you think please! suggestions, ideas, problems, jokes, funny stories?

it looks really nice.. simple..

the problems that i noticed right away was the animation link doesnt go anywhere.

and none of your drawings pop up bigger.

you probably knew about those two things though

yeah animation isn't up yet. sad face.
but do none of the images pop up bigger? hmm it should be just all of the caricatures that aren't uploaded.

yeah some of the links lead nowhere, one of em led to just the thumbnail, but I'm sure that can all get sorted out easily by your production assistant!

your pics aren't represented well.

First, half them, at least, noone that's looking at employing you is going to go through all of those.

Second, take your pics, increase their canvas size by at least 2 - 4 cms on all sides. Atm they are cut to the edge of the pic, your designs need breathing room.

And I am a little disapointed that they open up in a new window instead of the ample space you could have in your site for it, but the other 2 things are more important.

sorry abeadleo. i think the spreads are probably still at a higher res than they need to be so i can most likely just cut the size down in half. at least. or so help me. i'll be back. throw momma from the train.

i'm sorry spacesick can you just leave a note with my assistant, and i'll read your feedback at a later time. i'll get back to you.

i wanted them to open up in a new window that was the same size of the picture, but i couldn't figure out how to do that :/

bigger thumbnails you say? or were you saying put a empty border around each thumbnail? eventually the thumbs and images will dwindle down to my favorite and newest work. I just have to start doing some more stuff.

I would be careful with hi-rez downloads. It takes a long time to download and gives people a file that they could more easily steal from you. The resume is also an enormous download for what it is. I know a lot of people just make a web page to hold resume type info and may also include a download. The portfolio in my opinion could be more focused. Have a couple different options available. Don't waste an art director's time downloading or looking at stuff that they don't want to see or wouldn't hire you to create. I might have an animation specific portfolio as an example. You don't need to show an editorial art director that kind of stuff unless they ask say in an interview. Also, I've heard art directors say that they assume you can draw, so figure drawings are unnecessary in a portfolio like this.

These are just a few things to think about. You've got a lot of great work, good luck.

some of that's repeat already...

so, I agree opening in a new window is not great. You only have a few seconds at most to capture the viewer's attention, how do you want them to spend it?

letsmakeart on Jun 07 '08 at 4:00pm
im talking about your actual pictures, not the thumbnails. They open up and there is often little space around them.

letsmakeart
letsmakeart on Jun 07 '08 at 4:00pm
that could use about 1 - 2 cm extra border.
castle
   castle on Jun 07 '08 at 4:02pm
I didn't look through them all, but it would be nice to see some of the uses / context for the images as you have in your download portfolio. Show the shirt or wallet or whatever.

I just sent you an email. its the code to resize your windows the size you want them
letsmakeart
letsmakeart on Jun 07 '08 at 4:03pm
also 84 megs and 8 megs for your downloadables is absolutely ridiculous.

I wouldn't hire you simply because it looks like you don't know how to get anything down to a reasonable filesize. For example I heard of a girl that submitted a 20 meg resume and I wanted to bin it without reading it because only an idiot would submit a 20 meg resume.

Basically you have the viewer downloading 8 megs just so your resume can have a cardboardy background, that's it.

Your file could be way smaller even at 300dpi, let alone saved for screen.

I'm not even going to bother opening your print resume, and noone else will either.

and castle is right, people want to see results, they want to know that not only can you draw kick ass stuff, that it is commercially viable.

The image above made it on owl movement. Is there any indication of that? nope... can you see it on a shirt? nope, link to buy? nope... There's no context for your images.

nice start, jubsy. i think the left frame could be smaller, and i agree with a lot of what everyone else said.

well thanks for all the feedback everyone. most of what has been said i plan on working out. I just wanted to get something up on the internet for the time being. What you're talking about the results is exactly what i eventually plan on doing. Having a caption for each piece of art and what it was used for. The downloadable files are the same high res files I had to give to my teacher for class so I haven't bothered to shrink them up yet, but i'll do that. As for as the portfolio itself, i'm pretty much done with altering that for a while. The point was to show a range of projects and mediums while the website could focus more specifically on an animation section and pure artwork section. I just finished it and took it to a portfolio review at AIGA which was super helpful. Got some great feedback from advice, so after a couple more changes I'll leave it be.

thanks for the code danielle!

make it smaller. I don't care about changing it, but if oddica mag can fit in 8 megs so can you.

Well, it's now down to 2.7 meg, but alas that's still pretty darned huge.

But it's still a Good Thing you've got the new website going, since the old one (on Nauru?!?) gives me an 'access forbidden'. That's a lot less fun than even a large file or two.

oh yeah thanks for reminding me. i realized it's about 20 times easier to export pdfs through inDesign rather than photoshop so i've been meaning to fix those files up.

still working on the new site. i want to get the images to pop up on the main page rather than a new window like people have mentioned above, but my html coding is a bit limited. aka i have no idea what i'm doing.

As Joe wrote, try Lightbox JS. Nice effect and easy to use.
