Illustration major, and in my experience it was a lot of traditional drawing: figures, heads and hands, costumes...

At my design school the first year program consists of level one courses in Photography, Drawing, Sculpture, and Design. The design classes generally are all manual (i.e. placa paint, cut and paste) until the second year. The basic assignments consist of rudimentary grid/composition work and study of type.

By the way I highly recomment "Elements of Typographic Style" by Robert Bringhurst for beginning design students. It's a must read for all designers.

In my school I took bach. of fine arts in graphic design an in 1st classes (2d) we did lots of studies of the principles of design and black and white balancing exercizes...real basic. Also some intro to quark and adobes. I remember doing a cool painting that was sqaured off into different hues in each square...so i think you do some color theory too. school classes blur together after a while.

I taught first years. You will get alot of mileage out of anything revolving around the history of design because you will see all styles from LaTrec and Bauhaus to David Carson and House Industries.

Other than that, it is a ton of making your way through the processes and getting better at them. If you are creative, you will always be creative - so learn how to utilize the avenues they teach you to be creative in. Hope that makes sense.

If you suck, then good luck. It will be tough.

(by your sub, I'd say your OK - I wasn't kidding to all of you other people who suck!)

i took a beginners course in graphic design at art center about 4 years ago. i remember we had to create a new corporate identity for a exsisting company. after creating logo you have to create a stationary set( letterhead, businesscard, envelope) for the same company using your logo. we did a couple more things but i don't quite remember.

you have to take 2d drawing classes and typography and stuff like that you can't actually pick a concentration in computer arts and that kind of thing you have to do it all

i hated that cause i cant' actually hand draw so i had to switch my major right now i'm going for a bachelor of science in computer science info tech.
