I'm dragging my ass on my 8-10 pg paper for the history of mafia and gangster films that's due tomorrow

description of the assignment:
"I envision these papers being a combination of research and analysis; in other words, you will be building an argument about a film (or a group of films) and you will be drawing upon research you will have performed on the history and theory surrounding gangsters in film."

I chose this topic off the list of paper topics

-1. Warshow states “we gain the double satisfaction of participating vicariously in the
gangster’s sadism and then seeing it turned against the gangster himself” (132).
Choosing ONE film, discuss the ways in which it reflects, or contradicts this statement.

I just need a film to analyze...

START LISTING MAFIA/GANGSTER FILMS THAT ARENT THE GODFATHER! GO!

Road to Perdition

The plot, taking place during the Great Depression, follows a mob enforcer and his son as they seek vengeance against a mobster who murdered the rest of their family.

but it might not fit with the theme of your paper.

or theres American Gangster, about Frank Lucas a real-life gangster from Harlem who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service planes returning from the Vietnam War.

You could also look at blow which is also about drug trafficing.

Not sure if that helps though.

for anyone that's curious these are the other topics

2. Glenn Man suggests that “I believe in America” (I don’t believe in its system of
justice) opens the progressive critique of American society in The Godfather Trilogy.
Discuss this theme in all or one of the films (Be careful NOT to fall into the trap of
simply re-explaining narrative events).

3. Using ONE film as your example text, discuss the representation of ethnicity in the
American gangster film.

4. Using either Brat or The Long Good Friday as your example film, discuss the
construction of ‘national identity’ in your chosen film and how that is reflected in the
main character, their motivation and their actions.
5. Using either Tom Reagan (Miller’s Crossing) or Leon (The Professional) as your main focus, discuss how the specific film/character reinforces the stereotype of the lone gangster (individualistic, ambitious, cruel) or how the film/character critiques the stereotype.
6. Modern American gangster films focus more on individual identity only in sofar as it exists with the collective identity of the Mafia as a coherent group/entity. With reference to ONE film discuss the notion of Mafia as a collective identity in American film.

I'm leaning towards doing the sadism topic on the departed but i'm not sure yet...the focus of the class has been predominately the italian american mafia realm of gangster films...even though the last section is more international but kind of a critical look at how these american stereotypes of the mob have been interpreted/influenced international films

ooooh rififi sounds cool...
could you see the sadism topic being applicable to the film?

-k.
OlliRudi
   OlliRudi on Nov 14 '10 at 6:28pm
re the sadism/comuppance thing, rififi is really more of a heist thing than a mafia culture movie...you gotta quote the mr blonde "stuck in the middle with you" sequence from reservoir dogs in regards to that though
jamesf
   jamesf on Nov 14 '10 at 6:29pm
yakuza might be another one you could do it's got national identity and maybe a bit o sadism. I think it was called yakuza at least - it starred bob mitchum

a prophet(the french film) and gomorrah(the italian film) are pretty great gangster flicks too
OlliRudi
   OlliRudi on Nov 14 '10 at 6:37pm
guess it kind of boils down to wether you define it as gangster in the scorsese sense of italian-american/ mafia organized crime or organized crime in general, though

also, i recommend the danish pusher trilogy
jamesf
   jamesf on Nov 14 '10 at 6:38pm
some like it hot might do for a little sadism - of sorts
Kerrn
Kerrn on Nov 14 '10 at 6:39pm
See I was thinking about goodfellas but I was thinking does Ray Liotta really get his comuppance?

Yeah there is his cruelty and the audience still relates to him and roots for him but he doesnt really see him penalized in the traditional sense (ie getting whacked or going to jail)

he kind of gets away with it. he sells out all his friends and doesnt have to go to jail.

i mean there is the retribution for his acts...in the end his ego/ambition leads to his downfall and he gets caught and he loses it all but he still kind of gets away

sure having to live an inconspicuous life in some midwest town is probably boring and his own sort of prison but idk...

maybe its the whole post-godfather/this is based on a true story thing that was kind of going on in the 90s that was supposed to show that these guys arent glamorous...theyre all just animals. looking out for themselves. they are not respectable or role models...theyre just criminals

adjfkdfajd...did i sort of just start to write a paper?...i dont think i did

also a concern - im kind of nervous to do one of the films that we've watched in class/everyone has seen because its that fear that everyone will do the same movie so if my paper sucks it will be more noticeable...

Karen, baby, I would totally not make out with you, cause that's Kevin's job; and I totally wouldn't think about it, cause Kevin would be upset with me; but, baby, I would totally maybe sort of half think about it in the wee hours of the night when I was caught between slumber and thought.
