mad cat: yay for suggesting Kabuki and V for Vendetta. I have Circle of Blood, and have been trying to get my hands on the masks of noh and agents collection. I've been getting the Alchemy series, but don't want to read it yet till I'm caught up. I should just buy the graphic novels, but like the single issues.

Strangers in Paradise

My suggestion - which actually wouldn't appeal to 17-year-old boys, most likely. So nevermind.

starr226, ik dont really have a pref.

maybe something like hard-boiled
starr226
   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 9:34pm
if you liked hard boiled I would suggest, obviously, anything by frank miller.

300 and Ronin are both pretty under the radar by him and nice.

I assume you've read Watchmen.

The Preacher series it the best comic epic of all time. it's tough, it's real, it's cool as hell. if you like that check out Ellis's Hellblazer stuff.

dave.adms on Jul 10 '06 at 9:37pm
i'd also like to get in to more of geoff darrow's stuff,

but he hasnt done a lot of stuff, has he?

not a whole lot no .... umm transmetropolitain is awesome, planetary, pretty much anything written by warren ellis,
wullagaru
   wullagaru on Jul 10 '06 at 9:41pm
oh and hellboy is always good too
starr226
   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 9:42pm
not at all - he has a new series. Shaolin Cowboy but I'm not sure how many issues are out (I actually checked 5 or 6). Hard Boiled was like a four issue comic that came out over 5 years.

He did Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot with Miller. But, again, I assume you've read that if you like hard boiled.

dave.adms on Jul 10 '06 at 9:43pm
transmetropolitain looks cool

completely forgot to check that out

If you looking to have some fun reading you can get some of those ranma 1/2... You would love something call Gon it's so cool and with no dialog what so ever.
starr226
   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 9:47pm
warren ellis stuff is an acquired taste though. Chances are you'd like it. I liked his Planetary stuff but really couldn't stand Transmet.

sort of like grant morrison's stuff. I would suggest the Invisibles his run on Doom Patrol and Animal Man...hell, even his JLA run, but 2 dimensionsal storybook characters talking in anagrams isn't for everyone.

I'd sooner someone get into Y:The Last Man than Transmet.
starr226
   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 9:50pm
And again, I can't recommend Preacher enough. Check and see if your local library carries the whole series - it will be worth any effort.

   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 9:51pm
shaolin cowboy is his own comic. He's pals with the wachowskis, though - he was a consultant on the matrix films.

I jsut read Marvel 1602 and The Books of Magic. I'm a Gaiman fan, though I've never read Sandman. It's such a huge series. Anything Adam Moore is good, mad cat and others suggested some (V for Vendetta, Watchmen). I particularly liked the two League of Extraordinary Gentlemen collections. Don't let the movie ruind that for you, just about all of Moore's graphic novels that get turned into movies are not too well done. Constantine and From Hell are some others of his.

If you're looking for the least kiddy thing you can find, The Invisibles will blow the shit out of your head. It's amazing.

   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 10:07pm
man, i don't want to get into why i didn't like transmet. in comic terms it's higher quality than average. I just felt that it was WAAAAY style over substance. A lot of the humor was very very base (like the poop ray). And the sort of b level politcal commentary always felt like a guy talking politics in leather pants.

style over substance sums it up...but for comics it's better than most stuff. and in terms of non-super hero fare you're usually dealing with not awesome stuff, so I don't want to knock it. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

rholliday it's alan moore. constantine is garth ennis not alan moore. and you should totally read sandman if you consider youra gaiman fan at all.
wullagaru
   wullagaru on Jul 10 '06 at 10:13pm
yeah seriously rholliday .. sandman is so fantastic not reading it is just silly ... also I love alan moores tom strong

starr .. yeah I understand what you mean .. but you are right in that its better than most .. I just happen to be a fan of ellis's style is all

Sandman was the second graphic novel (series) I read, after Watchmen. Both drew me into the land of incredibly expensive stories forever.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is also an outstanding book if that hasn't been mentioned yet.
starr226
   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 10:26pm
sandman might be the best of the nonsuperhero fare. It starts off, very initially, slow-ish, but suddenly it's just a world unlike anything else in comics. if someone was going to actually READ comics Sandman and Preacher are two self inclosed arcs that are put together masterfully. Don't short yourself.

I love tom strong, too. Actually, I like all the America's Best stuff he did (i haven't actually read promethea). It's funny how the guy who made comics mega dark with watchmen tried to change them back with that stuff. Top Ten is fun stuff, too.

Thenew zero, thanks! We seem to have very similar tastes! I like SIP a lot but it got a little long for me, I couldn't keep up! ALL the kabuki stuff is super awesome you HAVE to get it! Invest in the trades, you'll read them over and over. What issue is Alchemy up to? I will prob just wait for the collection. If you like Mack, check out his dare devil work it's really great!

Rholli, Hey love! I can't believe I forgot about LoEG!! You are the smartest!
rholliday
rholliday on Jul 10 '06 at 10:30pm
Yeah, I don't know why I always call Alan Moore "Adam." Can't seem to stop that. John Constantine's been in all sorts of books, but I considered him as Moore's since he created the character and owned the rights at the time they made the film. Ennis did write Hellblazer for a few years as I recall, so I suppose he can make a claim to him as well.

I got into Gaiman through his books, and only recently picked up a few his graphic novels. I'll get around to Sandman when I feel up to the task of such a daunting piece of work. It'll be a considerable time investment, not to mention the expense. :)
Larlar
Larlar on Jul 10 '06 at 10:35pm
Sandman doesn't actually take nearly as long to read through as you think it will. It's very good, but surprisingly lighter than other novels in its league.

You've got the expensive part down pat, though.
starr226
   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 10:43pm
rholliday, check your local library. they'll have it. graphic novels at libraries are so common now, i couldn't imagine them not carrying this. and if they don't check out their interlibrary loan. you can avoid all cost this way and still get the joy.
rholliday
rholliday on Jul 10 '06 at 10:57pm
Hey mo!

Yeah Larlar, Sandman takes up almsot an entire shelf at Borders, between the series, crossovers, analyses, analyses of analyses …

That's a thought starr. I haven't bothered with libraries since college, but they just might have it. I am in a fairly metropolitan area, after all. I really prefer to buy my books when I can, though. Maybe I'll read them and purchase at a later date.

I second..or third the Sandman recommendation.

Also, Jinx by Brian Michael Bendis is really amazing :)

mad cat: I've only got the first few alchemy. I probably will get the trades, eventually. As for SIP - I've been collecting that series for years. I was way behind, but the owner of my local comic shop had tons of back issues he wanted to get rid of cheap, so that was incentive enough. It's actually ending at issue 90. I believe the last one out was 82. Almost done :(

and we do have similar tastes, apparently! I only collect a few other series, mostly slave labor stuff - have any of that?

i also am reading The Walking Dead, which is a great zombie one. It's pretty standard, but the first few issues have really awesome artwork. I think they get someone else to do it eventually, but i havent read that much of it.
starr226
   starr226 on Jul 10 '06 at 11:55pm
i am pseudo interested in the walking dead. i read a couple issues and it really seemed like standard zombie fare. I'm hoping to get the condensed one, though, and read it as an epic and hope for the best

(i just reserved We3 at my local library, thanks Jubs, I love morrison's work)
