Threadless

Fear for the Folk
Fear for the Folk aka BiL Sherman is a boy, has been a member since November 2, 2009, has scored 394 submissions, giving an average score of 3.05, helping 5 designs get printed.
Can someone tell me why it's a bad thing to ask for crits in the sub zone? That seems totally arbitrary and wrong. Any comments on a design helps the sub, If someone actually makes a thoughtful crit, that's designer gold in my opinion. Asking for the same in return is not bad manners. I always check my subs and see if others who have responded to my design want crits, and I don't care what zone I'm in. One of the great things about this site is the support we give each other, and even at that a lot of great designs don't get printed. Getting designers to look at each others work and getting to know each other is really the point here. At least in my opinion. What do you think?

In my opinion the point here is for threadless to get great shirt designs and for us to get our shirts printed primarily. the community and the critique section and everything are great ways to talk about designs and help each other improve theirs.

but the sub section isn't about critique - it's about getting a finished design printed or at least a decent score. when i sub a design i think it's absolutely finished and the last thing i want is people commenting about how to improve it. if i want that i make a blog about a sub that's already finished scoring and ask why it didn't score very well and how to get a better result. imo the sub section is about the artist and his/her sub - even criticizing it if you want so - but not about anyone else or their subs. that's my 2 cents...

As much as YOU personally don't do anything wrong, you fall into the people who do it wrong group (that is if what you claim in your post is true).

There wouldn't be a problem if you do something like this, in my opinion:

"Your design is really great, but I think it lacks in X and it could really benefit from losing Y, also, Z's eyes look a bit funny.

When you have the time, could you look at my designs as well? I could really use some critique."

The problem is that this never happens, what usually happens is:

"Cool, Check out mine!

*link to his design*"

see the difference?

because of posts like that we have come to prejudge posts by people who put their designs as dishonest, they are merely commenting to put their link there, not really meaning what they say, hey, they may not even be voting on my design!

Have a nice day!

what ferfo said.

you get the feeling that the person is not commenting on your design because they are interested in it but simply for their own promotion.

If you want to promote your design then posting your own blog about it is the best way for people to see it and take a genuine interest.

I'm not worried about the morality of my crits. I mean what I say and if I give some a 5$ they deserve it. And I give many lengthy constructive crits, but I do give some short one when it's obvious the design totally awesome.

I won't "spam" anymore because I see now how people can abuse such a process.

Thanks for the tips!

it's understandable as i hear the critique section can be a ghost town most of the time.

but it's certainly become a faus paux, or however that's spelled, to link your work on a sub page.

Cause it makes you a cunt, and nobody wants to be a cunt.

I think a submission page is the one place where the designer would like all the attention on his/her design, and not have people use it to advertise their own stuff, that's all.

It's a Threadless thing. Trust me, after you've been here a while you'll feel the same way.

I always check the work of the people commenting on my designs, except those who ask for it.

I can think of any number of ways to manipulate results on this site. Not to mention that networking isn't the best way to tell if a design is actually good or not. My understanding of this site was wrong and I see that now. I'm sorry if "spamming" gets under peoples skin so much, and I can understand why. But I put a lot of crits out there and I really did want people to see my design and to get to know people on this site. Now I'm not so sure.

What makes me a cunt is that I'm responding to this bullshit. Not that I made minor mistake in attempt to share ideas.

my 2 cents... I put a couple of designs in the crit section and got absolutely nothing out of it... as soon as I subbed it I got all sorts of helpful advice and feedback - although too late at that stage.

But if anyone gives me any advice - anything at all and asks me to look at theirs, then i'm more than happy to. Their request also bumps my post/crit/sub back to the top where it's likely to be seen again... I have no problems with it - as long as they make an effort to say something unique and helpful beforehand.

And I don't think it makes you a cunt... that's retarded to say. If you don't like it fine, no need to act like a 12 year old. Have some respect

I'm only responding to comments above. I would never use a word like "cunt" into some one else's blog and if someone uses it in mine I respond to it. some one did so I did.

Being scolded by Againstbound is sort of a rite de passage to become a respected member of the community. Consider it an honour. Trust me, I've been there.

Sorry Fear of the Folk - I was referring to the original usage which was out of the blue and uncalled for.

it seems to be part of the etiquette around here. i think we all worry about a day when this community is just a big solicitation circle jerk.

LOL thanks gumbolimbo. I think I get it now. Lord knows I can be a bit of an asshole myself. I can see that spamming isn't really fair. Although the process of sharing is exciting and fun it doesn't justify simple responses with a link. I just didn't want my efforts at getting my work out to this community to be seen as manipulative, at least not in a bad way. I really do honest responses to my work. I really don't care if my work gets printed(well i sorta doo) the process of sharing is really what I like about this site and I think my enthusiasm for that process just got the best of me.

thanks for responses to this blog.
