EDIT: here's some decent work at home (WAH) sites i found.

but first
-you might want to create an email just for these, because you will need to join than one to make any money and they send most requests by email
-make sure you have paypal, some send money that way
-not all pay in money. some use gift certificates or points to put you in drawings for money. most have a limit that you can cash-out on.
-if you are prone to lie, keep track of it or you will get booted
-keep at it! most businesses will send you more work the longer you stick with them.
-if you don't qualify for a survey, you probably won't get paid
-short surveys are usually sent to determine if you qualify for the real thing
-if asked for a referral, PLEASE use ladylilac*gmail (it you want)
-if one sucks, please tell me and i'll delete it

the list thus far (bold ones i like):

American Consumer Opinion - pays by check

Baker Street Solutions - heard good things, haven't gotten contacted by them yet

Choozz - pay in cash or prizes; haven't qualified for anything w/ them yet

DataIntelligence - cash and prizes; not currently surveying but will put you on their list

Focus Pointe Online - online and on location; cash

InHome Product Testing - you get to keep the full-sized products

Lightspeed Panel - points for cash or prizes; got a few surveys through them

MyOpinion Now - points for cash/prizes; heard good things but haven't been contacted by them

Mindfield Online - pay cash and prizes; have contacted me frequently

NPDOR - drawings for prizes and sometimes cash; haven't done much with them

Pinecone Research - pay cash, maybe prizes; recommended by hanzabean

Polling Point - points for prizes; have a lot of for-fun polls; haven't been contacted much for them

pureprofile- recommended by mz_kat_ii; pays cash

Scour Search - pay visa gift cards for searching the web; not a survey site! i love this because i'm constantly searching the web, but it isn't for everyone.

SurveyLion - pays cash; int'l

Survey Savvy - cash, if you don't qualify for survey they put you into a drawing for cash; been sent a few but haven't qualified

Test Spin - gift cards; haven't qualified for any of their surveys

Valued Opinions - cash and prizes; contacted occasionally

MISC sites i either don't have the right browser/computer, am not interested in their services for my situation but are still good companies, or haven't had a chance to test myself but will:

LiveOps - requires phone
WestAtHome - requires phone
VocaLabs -requires phone
ChaCha -requires Foxfire, pass a test, fill out a W9; get paid $.02 per answered web question

is there a decent work-from-home way to make some additional cash (in a non-sexual context here folks, let's keep it legal)?

i know a lot of you can do extra design work, but that's not a talent of mine.

anyhow, i've got loads of doctor bills coming up super duper fast and just thought i'd toss this out there in the off-chance that someone knows of something that doesn't require me to "make an investment" beforehand.

thanks.

what's it called... like transcribing? transcribing lectures from an audio recording, typing them into a scripted form. it can be kind of tedious work (i looked into it once), but it's one option.
chelly
chelly on Jul 07 '08 at 3:05pm
i don't knit, i crochet. it is not a lucritive art. if i were to charge by the hour the end product would be so expensive that no one would buy it. heck, i charge mere dollars and people don't buy my stuff now.

that option, out.

thank you for the compliment.

A friend of mine was too sick to work outside her house, so she used to do all kinds of jobs where people would be directed into her phone line for all sorts of things, from toy r us to flowers by mail, and she would read the prompts off the screen and make some half-decent money that way. I think it was workathome.com or something like that, but it seems like something that's pretty easy to get work from. Hope that helps!

to wotto and fna - i'm not totally sure, but most of those types of things require a phone line (i do not have). if they would accept a cell phone, i'm still not sure i could do it. i tried doing phone psychic work for a while and it was really stressful.
chelly
chelly on Jul 07 '08 at 3:10pm
i can't really get a night job because i need to stay at home with the boy, so i'm a bit limited. plus i don't have a car.

i'm hoping this list would help other people too. not just me. everyone needs more $$$ for something.

online surveys is a good idea too. i signed up for a few places but then never got anything sent my way.

i used to be computer savvy, but nowadays i'm not so sure. i could potentially help old people who aren't familiar w/ computers.

no, i am not able to babysit other kids. my patients extends to one child that only survives because he is of my flesh. also, i don't know anybody.

chelly on Jul 07 '08 at 3:24pm
just looking around it seems as though the transcribing thing is mostly medical and the best way to do it would be to go through training and get certified and buy some kind of pedal and good headphones and such

stuffing envelopes isn't looking very reliable

dildo assembly - i heard about someone who had this job one time and it sounds like a hilariously fun job but i have no idea how to go about figuring out how to find that job

i had a friend at university who paid her way thru her whole degree talking dirty to men. I used to go around and have dinner there sometimes and it was hilarious, she'd be talking about bumsex while cooking some burgers. She made a lot of money but she never got a boyfriend cos of it.
chelly
chelly on Jul 07 '08 at 3:40pm
aw, crammed comfort

the dog thing is something to consider, although my available hours would probably be the same as the owners' since i work 8-5

the sex chat would make me nervous as i have a toddler who repeats everything and even though he goes to bed early i would guess that i'd start getting creeped out

the online survey thing looks okey dokey for now

sometimes i think about becoming a notary public

I know some travel/review sites pay admins hourly and you don't get that many hours... And sites like about.com will pay you to write some articles on a number of subjects, I think you just need to show them that you are capable of writing. I don't know you or if you're a good writer or not, but the quality of some of the stuff there isn't too high, so definitely don't be intimated if you haven't ever been a paid writer.
V1ctorya
V1ctorya on Jul 07 '08 at 4:28pm
was the psychic thing that stressful? I've looked into those before, but I hate the thought of duping people who in the end just seem lonely.

I've been offered sex phone jobs before, but a. take note guys, saying 'your voice is so awesome, you should do sex phones, you'd make a lot of money' is not a good line on a first date and b. I'm afraid I'd just laugh throughout the entire thing.

As for medical transcription, well Chells, I can tell you every hospital I know has outsourced to India and Pakistan anyway. They record digitally, e-mail it to the service, get it back the next day. A few who bring in big bucks have whined enough to get American transciptionists, but more and more of the 'home' type jobs are going overseas where labour is much cheaper.

I'm keeping an eye on this blog. I, too, am looking for something part time. I used to do adult education, but despite the good money it was, not really stressful, just disheartening.

chelly on Jul 08 '08 at 8:54am
so the online survey thing -
it could be potentially valid for someone who has lots of time and the ability to organize and the patience to wade through the bad sites to find good ones. that person is probably not me. which sorta sucks because i just gave my info out to a lot of web pages. i had tried this once before several years ago, but the sites look a lot more professional now. it isn't until you've given out all your info and they start you on a survey and they direct you to sign up for five more sites like thiers and each site wants you to sign up for a program or buy a product and then you will get reimbursed for that product. it is all a decent idea if you remember to cancel as instructed, but if you don't then you are stuck. also, a lot of places just sign you up with the potential to make some money as though your time is a lottery. i'm not saying that all of these ways of making some cash are invalid, but i don't really have time for games or loops. if there is a site that wants to give me money for products i've already tried, then lead me to it.

I always see flyers stuck to lamp posts around here saying you can make $500-$3000 dollars part-time, working from home, ask me how!

But it is probably a scam because they do all their advertising on lamp posts.

i dunno tonteau, it's pretty cheap to have a company stuff envelopes for you and bulk mailing for companies is cheaper than for individuals. it doesn't make any sense to outsourse home-bound employees in any situation. unless, of course, you were set up w/ a local print shop that needed additional employees during a busy season.

Chells- I used to do mystery shopping, but, like, I made a total of thirty bucks. It's not as easy as it looked (in terms of, I had to go to a place and buy food and then do the write up and by the time I was done I was making 5$ an hour including travel time)

make sure to check the BBB website before you do anything...

if you find something lucrative, you should post it on here as i'll probably need something to pay the bills whilst i'm in college next year

i'm sure there's a ton of on-the-side jobs that would be valid, but most of them are things i cannot do.

nothing involving traveling (no car)
nothing on the phone (don't want to wake the boy)
nothing w/ a time constraint (unpredictable schedule)
nothing involving mailing (no car, only post office once a week)

and so on

so, i'm sure there are plenty of decent jobs if you are willing to bend a bit

ok dokey kids who are watching this, there's a light at the end of the tunnel

i recently came across this forum page
scroll down a bit and they talk about:
west at home
liveops
just answer, experts
vocalabs
focus pointe global
etc etc

there's a long list that i haven't had a chance to check them all out, but you can tell by reading through the comments that people are being honest about how valid the companies are.

some need land lines or certain types of computer connections
some are set up by location

but it is a very good start in a sea of cons
