I do a crapload of things now. really.

I'm even organizing an earth-week at my high school.

Seattle is so green and hippie.

We recycle everything at all times. And I have a re-useable shopping bag. Also, I don't drive. Ever. Lastly, chances for Chicago in September is 99% but that has nothing to do with being green.

what kind of things do you do for earth week?
when i was in high school, the extent of it was picking up litter along the hiway.

my plan, currently, is to resuse every plastic water/juice container that is over 1 liter. i'm going to cut them in half when finished with them and use them as planters.* the side with the open end
the other half, i'm going to make flower pots out of. to grow smaller things like herbs, chives, etc

**chelly sorry i'm slacking so hard on the next interview

one of the shows i was watching was saying something about the connection between how bad allergies are and how industrial the world has become.

I recycle my just
I recycle other peoples junk
I replaced all my lightbulbs to cfls
I air dry my clothing instead of using the dryer
I take navy showers
I boycott bottled water
I sign petitions
I talk to others about it almost daily
I talk about it on youtube
I put stuff in my toilet tank to minimize it's water usage
I buy green as much as I can
I reuse bottles, shopping bags, coffee cups all sorts of things

I take cloth/ reusable bags every week to the grocery store. I am also adamant about recycling. I hate when people throw away glass in a trash can. It drives me nuts!
shakethesheets
shakethesheets on Apr 14 '08 at 3:00pm
I recycle at home and yell at people if they come over and put recyclable things in the trash... I got my friend who lives in a dorm to start recycling, as his school offers recycling and most of his trash was water bottles, which horrified me.

I've been trying to reuse water bottles more. I recycle plastic shopping bags at the supermarket... I don't drive. Partly because, you know, I don't have a license, but that's good for the environment too. Public transportation isn't bad. I donate old clothes a couple times a year. And I'm a huge packrat, so a lot of stuff stays in my house instead of going into landfills.

Pizazz on Apr 14 '08 at 3:03pm

I'll be making a big blog for the Earth Week thing, it's gonna be pretty amazing. I'm already head of recycling in my school.

we'll be selling environmentally sustainable pencils, which in combinations with donations, will pay for planting trees outside the school

We will also have a Freecycle Swapfest, where people bring in anything and everything they don't want or use, and then it is all offered back up to everybody for reuse for free. What isn't taken will go to goodwill
We'll be cleaning our adopted highway
We'll have eco-announcements every morning
We've gotten a local grocery chain to donate high quality reusable canvas grocery bags to everyone in the school

in our apartment, we only shower/bath every other day. people probably think that is gross, but we feel like a few greasy days is worth it.

there's a lot of ppl that go around digging through the trash for aluminum because they need the change from recycling.

in college, we could take our bottles to the glass blowing guild.
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on Apr 14 '08 at 3:07pm
i shower every two days cos the environment
i make wifey heat up hot water to clean bottles instead of let the water run to warm up (she no likey)
i wanna buy this house to redo the windows
we don't have A/C
and i usually have a garden but not here, yet
avalanche_lily
avalanche_lily on Apr 14 '08 at 3:07pm
Cool! I wonder if there's a glass blowing guild around here.

I've tried doing the less shower thing. I just can't. I get mean when I'm greasy.

thats pretty awesome! I can totally see myself doing that stuff, but I'm too particularly well integrated into the real world.

I've been actually considering going into the environmental movement for a career.

Pizazz on Apr 14 '08 at 3:09pm
You can always take navy showers if you still wanna shower everyday. That's where you only have the water on when you are getting wet and rinsing off, turning it off for the lather part.

things I do:

recycle/reuse plastic bags
pick up litter
turn the thermostat down in the winter, up in the summer
don't run the A/C in my car, try to keep air pressure nominal
flush selectively
turn the water off when soaping up hands / shaving
don't buy things I don't need
use CFLs
turn off lights/radio/tv etc when not in room
switched to Macbook from desktop PC (uses 1/5th the power)
don't buy bottled water

things I'd like to do:
own a hybrid/PHEV/electric car or walk/bike-ride
carpool more effectively
take shorter showers
air dry clothes
run off grid or at least from clean energy
switch to local/organic foods

marblecargirl
marblecargirl on Apr 14 '08 at 3:13pm

reusable shopping bag
carpool to work
just started my own little herb garden (not that herb, shirty)
try to never use heat or AC

also, one tip for boiling water is only boil what you need... so like if you make yourself a cup of tea... just heat up enough water for roughly one cup. I try to do that.

THE AMAZING HEAD! is the name of the shower head that we use. we got it from walmart for $10 and it is this tiny thing that cuts back on the water you use, ups the water pressure you feel, and has a button that turns off the flow when you are shaving or whatnot.

plus, it's called THE AMAZING HEAD!

we've installed it in every home we've lived and left it there for the next tenant.

I have been raised to be pretty 'green', but in all honesty, that has as much to do with saving money as saving the environment.
I HATE wasting anything, im always taking stuff out of bins because it seems like a shame to let it go to landfill.

(also, I was ill & stupid & only realised today you'd replied to my message on etsy, sorry!)

you can get crappy ones at home depot... hmm... maybe target has one.

most shower heads are relatively low flow, I think... they started mandating aerators be put on all shower heads in like the 70s. that really cut downs on water usage.
noodlezoop
noodlezoop on Apr 14 '08 at 3:22pm
I constantly nag everyone about properly disposing of batteries, cf bulbs, old thermometers, smoke detectors, paint, and electronics. Seriously, an outing to the dump once every couple of months is not such a hassle.

My county actually has textile recycling, too, but you have to take the stuff to the dump yourself for it to be processed. Anything that's clothing and good enough to wear goes to charity, and things that aren't good enough get turned into paper or something (I forget).
elwood78
elwood78 on Apr 14 '08 at 3:22pm
I think a better idea for showers is to install shut off valves... so you can turn the water off while soaping up. Either that or shower together...
Pizazz
Pizazz on Apr 14 '08 at 3:24pm
and haha, I'm even wearing Infinity MPG right now!

shower together, like that one video? ha.
noodlezoop
noodlezoop on Apr 14 '08 at 3:27pm
elwood, there is somebody somewhere sometime that actually made a showerhead like that (my parents have them in their house), but they are very old and corroded so I have no idea where they came from. It was kind of a shock to me when I went out into the world that nobody else seemed to have them.
chelly
chelly on Apr 14 '08 at 3:28pm
there's a show on bbc about a group of people trying to survive at a dump, and also use stuff at the dump to make more earth-friendly items

they did a segment on cell phones and how many thosand pounds of cell phones are tossed daily, but they can be recycled

the usps offers free cell phone recycling now

i wish all recycling pick up were free

someday, probably
phones
phones on Apr 14 '08 at 3:30pm
yeah i do that with my jeans too
Pizazz
Pizazz on Apr 14 '08 at 3:31pm
I bet it will be free soon.

but hey, am I the only one who doesn't think of going green as combating global climate change? because hey, it's happened before in human history, 3 times ( think it's 3 or 4?) and yes, it was catastrophic to some.
But to me, it's all just about dwindling recourses. We just cannot survive on consuming at the rate we are!
elwood78
elwood78 on Apr 14 '08 at 3:32pm
noodlezoop, yeah, I'm not sure why that idea hasn't caught on. it could reduce water usage, for showering, by like 1/3.

one thing about recycling cell phones is that often times these phones make their way to 3rd world countries where children/adults get exposed to unsafe amount of hazardous materials. your best bet with a phone is to use it as long as possible and then donate it, and hope it gets reused. I think with AT&T now you can get a used cellphone with your plan, if you don't need a state-of-the-art one

i try to reuse grocery bags, my wife and i recycle as much as possible and we both have a reasonably short commute to work.
elwood78
elwood78 on Apr 14 '08 at 3:40pm
pizazz, environmentalism helps fight global warming, whether directly or indirectly... by consuming less, you're using less energy and hence contributing less to CO2 being put into the atmosphere, waste in our garbage dumps and pollution in general.
chelly
chelly on Apr 14 '08 at 3:41pm
i regift.
that's recycling, right?
Pizazz
Pizazz on Apr 14 '08 at 3:43pm
yeah, I'm all fr fighting Global Climate Change too, but for me at least, that shouldn't be the main point. I think alot of the 'green fatigue' going on out there has to do with people not believing in fighting Global Climate Change
Pizazz
Pizazz on Apr 14 '08 at 3:44pm
regift is reuse!
lemonalle
lemonalle on Apr 14 '08 at 3:45pm
i recycle and
use my own bags for the grocery store and
use plastic bags for mini-trash bags and
wash and reuse my plastic utensils and
hope that my work will let me telecommute some day so that i won't have to drive as much

and i never EVER litter.
