*this blog does not promise that cbuchholz will answer said question, but encourages additional questions regardless*

why don't you post gallery photos?

so, i hear you are a jahova. i know nothing about that. how's that work as far as your art is concerned? are you secretly brainwashing us all? what is your cult going to be called?

how much time do you find you generally spend on a design?

have you ever had your heart broken?

what do you personally feel is your strongest tee design to date?

any hints on what's going to happen w/ your select? are you going to be tempted, like so many past artist, to just have them print something that you've had sitting around for a long time?

i'm currently in love w/ the dovoctchkyskthdzka band (okay, it is late and i can't remember how to spell it) which you happened to recommend to our lovely valorandvellum. knowing this, what other music do you recommend i listen to next?

what maks you shake your rumpah?

what makes you shake your head?

what would you like to ask the ppl who vote on your designs?

etc later

I eagerly await Chris's answers as well.

chelly, blogs of this nature (or any nature) always turn into a madhouse. We're just more aware of the silliness when it's supposed to be serious. Haha.

I have another question!!!

Are you (cbuchholz) and Glennz separated at birth siamese twins? Or do you just have built in radio transmitters in your heads and that's how you communicate?

Oh, the pheromone... that's just hot dog juice and it always gets nate excited. You should try it!

A Sad New Song

That design was very personal to me.

5.) I would have to say either A Sad New Song, or Star Men. Probably Star Men, only because it's happier and more representative of my current disposition.

6.) I won't say when to expect it, but I am gathering my thoughts for the select. Do artists really do what you said? If they do, I'm sure it's because they feel that design is really strong and represents best what they feel is the perfect tee. If I had anything laying around I felt was good enough to submit, I would have done so already. I will say that I think a select tee is the visual representation of what you the artist values or believes. It should be very personal and intimate, and I don't believe it should be apologized for. So like every other select, I'm sure some will love mine, some will hate it, and that's ok.

7.) Well Valor told me about Beirut, but I've found that is somewhat similar to Devotchka, probably even better. I've been loving the new Menomena album, and there's a new Panda Bear album (the guy from animal collective) that i'm in love with. I don't know if those are really similar at all to Devotchka though.

8.) Music played loudly in my kitchen, especially when I'm not wearing shoes and I can slide across the floor.

9.) I don't know really!? I guess I don't do alot of head shaking, perhaps I need to do more.

10.) First I'd like to say thanks! Then I'd like to ask them to always be honest with me (not that I don't think they have been) If someone has some feedback, even negative feedback, I'd love to hear it! I have pretty thick skin, so I don't mind some constructive criticism.

11.) My favorite fruit is peaches! But it has to be a fresh peach. Fresh pineapple is good too.

Here's the answer to question one again....

I don't have any gallery pics right now just because I don't really have any good pics of me wearing threadless shirts. I take alot of pictures, but it's hard to take pics of myself, and my friends aren't real big into photography.

I actually think though that not posting pics on T-less is smarter. When somebody doesn't have a picture of an artist, they create their own mental portrait. That mental portrait is probably much more consistent with the artist's work than the artist's actual face is.

these answers are very interesting. i'm glad you're taking the time to answer (and reanswer) them, thank you.

vandv of course wants to know about your connections w/ glennz, but also wonders if you are aware of the reoccuring nature themes in your subs?

Question 2:

Yes I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses! I would be more than happy to explain in detail all my beliefs, but I don't think this forum is the appropriate place. I wouldn't want this to turn into a religious argument, plus I don't wish to use T-less as a means for pushing a religious agenda. I would be happy to address specific questions about my beliefs via email. I will say though that JW's are normal every-day people. We don't sacrifice children or anything.

Religion is a huge part of my life, so it is only natural that some of my designs explore religious themes or concepts. For example, it's fairly obvious that there are some religious undertones in the story behind the Sand King design. However, I don't think the design itslef relies on that theme in order to be successful, neither does the design itself push any sort of religious agenda. If you don't like the story, you are more than welcome to create your own meaning, in fact I encourage you to do so. So no, there's no brain washing, and no cults. But if I were to have a cult, I would name it Tiger Army in honor of a band I like.

question 3: How much time do I spend on a design?

I spend usually spend about 12-24 hours on a design. I spend alot on the presentation, because I think that is important. My quickest designs were the first two, which I'm not real proud of. I was new to threadless and just unsure about my style, plus I didn't even think winning was a possibility. No Repeats probably took the longest, around 24 hours.

Question 4: Have I ever had my heart broken.

Yeah big time. But I won't go into details except to say I was married once. To better answer the question, I refer you to A Sad New Song.

That one was very personal to me.

i would also like to add one more question: will you be getting a personal website anytime soon?
cbuchholz
   cbuchholz on Feb 22 '07 at 2:58pm
Do I realize there is a recurring theme to my work, or is it just subconscious?

It's both realized and subconscious. I realize that there are alot of natural themes in my work. But when I'm trying to think of a new Tee design idea, I don't say to myself, "how do I show the deconstruction of nature with this one." Rather, ideas just come up, and nature is often at the forefront of those ideas. For example, I might tell myself that I want to do something with a western theme. Then when I try to brainstorm ideas, things most often just come up with a natural slant. I guess that's mostly because of my upbringing. My parents were the kind that would much rather camp than stay in a hotel. We travelled all over the US visiting the national parks. Those experiences have really stuck with me, and that's where I draw inspiration. And I'd still rather camp than stay in a hotel!

This is awesome, both the idea to interview somebody and that he responded. cbuchholz was among my five or so favorite designers here, and participating in this interview makes me like him even more.
thanks chelly and cbuchholz, and I hope to see more interviews from chelly and others in the future.

i'm not sure who is next. it has to be a balance of finding someone willing to answer, how many questions i have bouncing around in my head, and when the next wild hair will hit.

it doesn't have to be limited to me though
i just never know the right time/place to ask a designer questions
chelly
chelly on Feb 22 '07 at 4:18pm
those last two statements are random. sorry. blogging at work.

that was suppose to be encouraging others to post questions to designers if the have them.

it would be nice to have a specific blog to turn to if you have questions for a designer.

I love your interview chelly!

I think Threadless has profiles or interviews
of artists somewhere, but I've never read them.
This format is so easy to get to and enjoy!

Thanks for throwing out those questions for cbuchholz
