Thanks. I hope I'll be getting an email from Threadless soon, but I'm not crossing my fingers.

I found Travis' monologue regarding the idea behind the Revolution inspiring, especially the fact that it's a move for designers to do what they want. So with this piece, I aimed for something designerly: something that didn't have a whole lot of meaning, but looked cool. I'm just not sure if I like it now. I feel like I need to inject it with a message, or at least hint at the existence of one. Suggestions are welcome, of course. Is this too obscure?

Why?

1. i like the stripes better the squares don't look good with the design

2. lime is more eye-catching on a shirt, especially a gray shirt.

"gameyy wait for more comments"

There was a certain urgency to that that made me laugh...

But I agree with steve here. The stripes seemed too busy, and I thought plaid gave it a touch of retro... I dunno.

wait till more people come to give suggestions

haha funny story:

I was just now tapping the trackpad to my laptop in a rhythmic fashion while reading your comments......when I scrolled up to click on the "blog forum" button I realized that all your submissions were green!...I thought "wow this guy likes green"......it turns out, that when I tapped my trackpad I was double clicking lkie mad because that's what happens when I tap the trackpad.....also my selecty-color is green........it all makes sense now, doesn't it

id have to say go with the stripes ..while I love plaid, when it doesnt follow the form it just makes it look flat. but the design is really cool and I like the colors. as to putting meaning behind it .. well honestly none of mine have meaning per se .. maybe stories but no meaning. sometimes things just look cool with out a meaning.

but I do have to agree with scoutti..I liek teh lime more for teh same reason he mentioned it just pops more.

I dont know what the crap but the top one is at least 23.45 times better than the bottom.

my thoughts:

The tree branches are distracting, as they're organic and the rest of the design is pretty structured. There's so much going on (with both, the plaid and the stripes in the middle that you've chosen especially), that my eyes don't know where to go. I like the color choices in the top one better, though. Some of the elements are introduced only once, like that curly straw thing on the left, and I think the design would be much better if it were repeated just a tad but more through the design. Not to be entirely negative (you know how my criticisms go), but it needs something to tie it together, because right now, both designs make me feel like they were just splattered on there with no intent of, well, anything...

So! Work on the composition a bit. I'd also suggest making that cyan a bit more muted and stick with the yellow rather than the green. I also think a peach would look interesting. OH. And the dots. I think they're the underlying reason I feel like I'm rushed into the design and right back out. Maybe incorporate the tree branches (since you seem to like them) with the dots... maybe a metamorphosis of the organic branches into the dots, and the same with the dots--have them form an organic or curved shape. I think that'd make a huge difference.

Oops. Got carried away. Apologies in advance.

My designs

All about me

Interesting story, heh. I got started designing tees back in high school for bands and school clubs. And by "design", I mean crappy colored pencil sketches on printer paper that the screenprinters were somehow able to make tshirts out of. In college, I came across Threadless and tried my hand at digital tee design. Those designs, too, were all pretty hideous.

As time went on, my designs finally started getting better and I became more familiar with what went into the tshirt making process. In 2006 I dove in headfirst and started Linty Fresh, my own tshirt line.

Things were slow at first, but with a lot of hard work and tons of research into marketing and branding, I was able to quit my day job a couple of years later and run LF full time. I traveled around the country doing shows and selling my swag, and it was a blast.

In 2009, I had the chance to move to China and improve my Mandarin. I fell in love with the place and I'm still here, two years later.

I currently run Linty Fresh (based in Georgia) from here in China and have started marketing it here locally as well. It's been quite an experience. Last year I started a documentary series on Vimeo called "Life in the Middle" all about my experiences here. I also started a monthly comic strip based on the same concept that is being published in a Chinese/English magazine here.

Aside from those projects, for a time I was designing and producing custom apparel (like wool coats and tailored suits) for customers overseas, but the headaches involved have forced me to take a hiatus for awhile.

I blog about a lot of this stuff, too, specifically when it comes to the cultural differences between China and the States and the interesting things I've learned along the way. I also analyze marketing and branding from time to time, as well as cataloging some of the processes behind design and running a company. You can read it here.
