Well, since I know for a fact everyone can't wait for the Threadless crew to get back and for the revealing of some new kick ass shirts, I figure what better topic to bring up other than the subject of...

What designs do you think will get printed in this next batch or which ones would you love to see!?

Personally I would like to see the tree one from Rock Deputy. Possibly one of Mezo's oh so incredible designs and of course there's gotta be a Glennz shirt in the mix. Oh and that new shirt with the fish that almost broke the 4.0 barrier. What does everyone else think?

I'm still hoping for the "You Sunk My Battleship reprint. As for new shirts, rumors have been that Rock Deputy's tree is the June Club shirt, and another rumor is that > stuck with pins "the Killing Tree" is printing.

Billy was a Good Ghost, The Fast Supper, and Morning would be cool... I'm hoping for a Motovino reprint too.

I'm also guessing we will get the WIRED Loves results. So that will take up at least 3 of the shirts out of the 6. But "My Pet Human" would be great to see a winner.

There's been so much interest in "My Pet Human" that I would have to say it will definitely be printed, whether as part of the Wired contest, or not.

My bet for the first round once they get back is the 3 Wired winners and 3 reprints (hopefully including "You sunk my battleship").

There's no doubt that My Pet Human will be in there. It's so great, it has to be.

Yeah i think My Pet Human will be a winner too the way everyone keeps talking about it. If "Natural Rejection" (Rock Deputy's tree shirt) is printed for you 12 month clubers, I'll deff. be jealous. Just a perk of being in the club I guess though.

I have given up hope for my cute robot design.

I wept for a while about that.

I don't recall My Pet Human nor Morning - so if anyone could provide links, I'd be thrilled to go check them out. I really loved The Fast Supper also, by the way. I will probably be making my first Threadless purchase when this new batch hits.

It's a good concept, but I think it is not illustrated greatly. If it was printed, there would be a couple of odd hard edges that would bother me. Half a tree. And the telephone pole just seems to be out of wack. I think I'll repost this on the comments for the shirt too. Just my thoughts.

Sorry for my plethora of identical postings above. It was a case of copy/paste (to look at other submissions) and the back button.

Anyway...

Morning is an average concept. But, dang the execution is not aesthetically pleasing. Same goes for The Killing Tree, too, even though that is being printed.

My Pet Alien is a fine illustration. And sickenly cute. I hope the colors would be altered if it got printed.

Should Predictament get printed, someone should inform the REAL artist. Because that's just wrong.

Lastly, I vote for The Fast Supper print, too!

However...I may be a biased voter.

   grayehound on Jun 22 '05 at 12:24pm
Well, I guess it'd be crappy to vote for my own (I can't even bear to give myself higher than a 3), but I love My Pet Human and I guess everyone else does too. I won't buy it, even if it is printed, but I like the detail that got put into it.

Morning and Killing Tree do very little for me.

The Wired competition had some greatentries...DEXXON's Nuclear Family, eskimokiss' Distant Future and Mr. Rock's Let's Play PONG are my favs.

The IFC is tough, since there were so many similar ones. Mr. Rock's Don't shoot the Messenger!, Are you In . . . or Out?, by invisibleelement, Cement Shoes, by Manos, The Elevator's being Serviced, by Ian Leino and Gunjector, by injosh were the only one's I gave a 3 or higher. It's easier for me to judge that one since I never was able to finish my sub in time. I'm actually working on it now for the general contest.

If PREDICAMENT gets printed, I swear I'm going militant. That design, though well done, just pisses me off no end.

I vote for The Fast Supper print, too!

However...I may be a biased vector.

DAMN IT! I really want that natural rejection shirt lol. Is anybody who's in the club not a fan of the shirt and maybe willing to make a deal with me? Hopefully that's a legal move.

And I'd just like to say thanks for all the opinions, this blog post really exploded with responses which is aweseome. Can't wait to see what they end up printing.

I will say of PREDICAMENT...it's obviously all clip art, and even thematically, doesn't fit thier past submissions...

normally i hate clip art, especially in a contest arena. part of me will be a little mad if it wins...but imagine if it were your design....and that you took boring stock clipart and turned it on its head into something quite smart and got $400 for it.

if anything, we're all jealous.

i think i would be more shocked if it didn't win.
travis76

aha...well, definately idea taken....however the execution is diff and good in its simplicity, and my stock clip art arguement stands.

and yeah, twin's site makes me sick with jealousy...so why would he bother taking $400 from us strugglers for such a simple design.

still jealous.
grayehound

Oh, more than willingly:

http://www.bradholland.net/beta/portfolios/portAdv/images/0105.jpg

As twin notes when he posted it:

A Holland-esce, philosophical illustration.

He also comments:

I don't come close to Holland, but thanks. If I could submit paintings, I would. It is just a tee so an entirely different medium. I would never submit this to a magazine or anything. I would probably be blacklisted in that situation and lose my reps. I mentioned Holland in my description, so as you know, I didn't have any ill intentions. Conceptually, it was a way to get a shirt with the brilliance of Holland, my favorite illustrator. Basically, the same as Darth, the former highest vote. I believe a lot of people felt the same way and just voted on a shirt they would like to buy. On the contrary, there are many aspects that make my graphic unique, but by no means in comparison with Holland.

Man, I dunno why this is getting to me, but ever since it was posted and everyone went off as if it were the greatest thing on the planet, I've felt the need to comment. Sorry to everyone who's sick of my bringing this up.
travis76
   travis76 on Jun 22 '05 at 1:48pm
so is he saying that tees and magazines are below him- or for legal reasons, he'd lose his 'reps'...
Ian Leino
Ian Leino on Jun 22 '05 at 1:51pm
I'm with you grayehound. I've been really torn on this one, because one the one hand, it IS well done, and quite striking, but on the other hand, he admits that he lifted the concept, and that this type of thing would get him blacklisted in real illustration circles.

What I've finally decided is that even really-well executed plagiarism is still plagiarism. And it gets to me for the same reason it gets to you: we hate to see someone who copied another artist's work be applauded and praised rather than the true artist.
Robotron5
Robotron5 on Jun 22 '05 at 1:52pm
I interpreted it that he didnt submit it to a magazine because it would be something that would be seen and talked about by clients who would perhaps be put off by an idea that is obviously similair to others. And that he simply did it to see if he could get it produced on a shirt so he could get one. I could be wrong. I still like it though.
mezo
   mezo on Jun 22 '05 at 2:12pm
Funny thing....not only ripped off of Holland's concept, but did it by using clip art, which is someone else's art.

Not his concept.

Not his art.

Not his right to sell.

Oy, the punnishment.

Robotron, I agree that Andy likely didn't think of this as stealing an idea and was just trying to get a shirt made in the spirit of his favorite artist. I can understand that. But if...and I'm only really concerned with this IF...it gets printed, what kind of message does that give to every designer who looks at the top-scored submissions and recognizes it? Does that mean it's okay to go find some great conceptual artist's work that you like and dupe it, use your own style, but don't bother changing the layout? We all have inspirations, but it's inethical to do that. But, then again, that's just me.
strimackus
strimackus on Jun 22 '05 at 3:22pm
I'm an idiot. Although I've looked at the PREDICAMENT submission several times I just now 'got' it, i.e. I didn't notice that the fish the guy's about to catch is actually the island he's standing on. I guess I'm dense or something.

Anyhow, I'd love to see this shirt printed. It is kinda crappy that it is taken directly from someone else's work and made with clipart. However, I don't mind so much because a) it is well executed b) the guy said right off the bat that he based it on someone else's work and c) clearly the guy is ridiculously talented as can be seen by going to his website.

Also, I would like to see the killing tree printed, but only if it was cleaned up a whole lot, I find it a little sloppy now.
MrDomino
   MrDomino on Jun 22 '05 at 3:59pm
If you're ridiculously talented you can come up with your own ideas. It's also less well executed than I thought considering the amount of clipart that was apparently used. He also didn't say it was based off anything, he said "Holland-esque." The same example I gave in his blog applies here. My submission for the IFC contest is Frank Miller-esque, but I didn't take a specific page or layout of Miller's work and reproduce it. I didn't even look at any of his work while I was doing the submission, I just had the visual style in my head.

Grayehound's logic does teeter on the slippery slope, but I have to agree. It's a step in the wrong direction to print that shirt.
