I know it says no more than 4 distinct colors. What exactly does that mean?

I'm wondering I used several different greys in a shirt if each one is a separate color or they are all considered as black.

Meaning do different shades of the same color count as separate colors?

If it takes a different ink to make a color, then that's another color. If you can find a successful way to shade a color (halftones aren't allowed, for the most part), then you could simulate other colors.

My question for the threadless crew is this: do you guys ever use translucent inks?

You can create the appearance of different value levels of a color by using color halftones.

A quick google image search brought up a good example if you don't understand.

I started typing before you posted your response.

I pose to you: Half tones aren't allowed?

nevermind

Too Many Colors - Design must have 4 or less unique colors, no gradients, no photographs, no tiny halftones. Remember, black & white count.

they won't even take big halftones. I did one with a rather large halftone that got declined.

4 colors means 4 colors. grey, dark grey, light grey, and pale grey each have their own color in threadless' book. besides, you can't really do the halftone thing, they don't accept it often.
