""This graphic was inspired by a cartoon i saw in an old paper in my grandfather's house by a guy named "bovarini". I couldnt find anything else about the guy or the original cartoon, i think it was in like the 60's.""

Above is what is listed on the submission by ni.m for heavy medals. I'm just wondering what the original cartoon that "inspired" this looks like.

I would really like to see the exact cartoon that this was inspired by, either from a scan, or told which old paper this cartoon appeared in. What urks me is the style of drawing in the face. The style says to me "political comic" very clearly.

You don't need to use the bunny ears when saying "inspired". The artist named a source of inspiration, which is the opposite of what someone who's ripping off a design does. No need to start accusing people. It's just plain rude.

If the artist or someone else will defend this piece by bringing the original cartoon to the public forum, and if this is truly original, I'll gladly apologize.

And yes, some people DO name the source of their inspiration while actually TAKING elements directly from their work. The submission AEthernet is a perfect example.

The cartoonist is named Maurizio Bovarini. He's an Italian satirical cartoonist. I was only able to find one piece of his art on the web, an album cover. The face on that cover is definately in the same style as this shirt. Bovarini mostly shows up on line in indexes of cartoonists, with references to a drawing by his in a book that was in print in 1980.

Maybe we have someone from Italy who can tell us more?

ha. i know its like almost a year later but i just came across this blog and thought it was funny, in a kinda sad way. well, in reply, i'm not going to scan the cartoon which i still have but its really not ripped off. the style is similar (on purpose!) but the original face is actually in profile (rather than front) and the general is actually saluting. there is no pile of bodies either, just a few toward the bottom.

also on a much cooler note, after i posted the artist who inspired me's name in the design's comments, there were apparently alot of google search directed hits to:
http://www.improcrastinabile.it/photoblog/
who is an artist and actually the daughter of the Bovarini who then followed her ISP's hit tracker to the source of the traffic and contacted me. it was really cool to talk with her about her father and his art and stuff (and she really dug the shirt, thanks threadless)

anyway, i was just kinda put off by the sort of negative vibe of this post when i just read it and thought i'd at least put a post up for the record to make it end on a nice note.
