Hey everyone, just wanted to say a few words about the Bestee winner this year. I know it comes as a not so shocking shock to a lot of you. Emmy's "It's Toile About You" win of People's Choice was definitely deserved under the framework and rules that we set forth. However, we understand that many of you were surprised to see such strong participation from outside the Threadless community in this year's Bestee voting, even though we've always encouraged everyone to involve their friends and networks in voting - this just reached a whole new level.

That's the way the cookie crumbles. Huge congrats to Emmy and all you other Bestee winners!

Next year will be different. We are already brainstorming ways to make the Bestee awards more inclusive and representative of the community. One of the main ideas is to have more than one grand prize that each celebrate an important area of design at Threadless so that it's not so weighted at the top with the popular vote. An official announcement will be made on this once we figure things out. Any suggestions are welcome, we want the Bestees to be the most amazing award ceremony in the entire world for anything; ever.

p.s.: My only plea... blame Threadless if you're not happy with the winner, not Emmy - she didn't break any rules and did everything she was supposed to do to promote her design for the Bestee People's Choice award.

(3) Though much fuss is made about becoming a member in the community: submitting designs, posting and responding in blogs, scoring, critiquing, showing a presence here. It's not mandatory but good to know it's not important. Thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding.

Well, I'm not saying it's not important. I personally think it's important. I earnestly enjoy talking with all the people hear and getting feedback on my work. Just saying not everyone's chatty and wanting to participate in the blogs. I don't think that should exclude them from submitting ideas and winning prizes.

your opinion comes across as just blindly accepting the way things are and telling others to do the same, which isnt a great thing all of the time

Not at all. I'm saying that it's a business and that the way this business works. By all means, let it ruin your day and your image of the people running this community. Which, incidentally isn't such a great thing all the time either.

Everyone's going to do what they want, regardless of what I say. And that's why it's my opinion.

My intentions were to finally start subbing designs on here pretty soon but after everything that's happened recently, I've reconsidered. I'm thinking about joining deviantart and other art networks to build up a fanbase before submitting here. Perhaps that'll help me get a print faster.

*that is a pointed joke*

It's that easy to get votes though. Who is to say that after these results, threadless artists won't resort to mass promotion from outside Threadless? No rules are being broken right? The way things are sucks BALLS, but at least skaw pointed out that there will be changes for next year...hopefully. Also, I don't care what anyone says about her not having to be active; If a community based company gave me $25,000 I'd be obliged to participate more. Time will tell if this will happen.

I'm very chatty. Perhaps I should stop chatting so often lol. People are probably tired of that "random dude tikimasters" replying to their blogs

I like to see people I know succeed. But, I like others I don't to succeed as well. I'd rather it be someone with a presence here, but in the end it doesn't matter.

Kudos to all the winners.

I'm think I'm done with this topic! ;) Cheers!

Yes, in the beginning I thought that threadless is competition of best designs and designers , but I realized that is not really like that... threadlles is combination of trade, advertising and sycophancy. Today, I'm really pleased when someone outside the party picks up the biggest selected prize. Pure capitalism and democracy.

You who do not like it, be consistent and stop shit around, accept the rules of the game or go to another place.

Orbanya said everything.

I am voted for Horde, wow man what a great design!!!!!

Just one thing: the best designers will continue to win, don't worry, but greatest prizes will go to parachutes:)

I cannot count the amount of times the word "business" has been used to allow a company to get away with issues that could be seen as ones of fairness or ethics or quality. It's like a business has no obligation to care about those things. It's really sad. And should be really untrue. Businesses want to make money, but we should not be OK with businesses wanting to make money without putting in the proper effort and quality control. Moneymaking is not it's own justification.

That is not to say that threadless is that sort of business, because USUALLY it is not. But that is where the issues have cropped up surrounding this design

Orbanya on Mar 09 '10 at 10:47pm
Well I haven't been here a long time, and it's already more than just business to me too. And I'm not saying that Threadless is a money grubbing company that doesn't care about the people that supply it with ideas and thusly product and thusly revenue. This is a really kick ass organization run by very cool people. But, they are a still a business that has payroll to pay, expenses to cover. etc. It's not just a charity foundation for starving artists. They are in it to make some money man. A business that doesn’t make money doesn’t last.

Also, I don't think that a relatively unknown person marketing themselves in an impressive fashion (well within the CONTEST rules) constitutes as a "steaming pile of shit". Hasn't this method worked for a few years now, and our friends and peers have won similar prizes under this system constraints without incident or outrage? It’s also great that they are overhauling the system based on peoples concern. At this point do they have a choice?

If you’re trying to infer that have a problem with this company, you didn't really read what I said. It's quiet the opposite. If I didn’t like them, I’d certainly not sit here and lambaste them. If I didn’t like it I’d leave. What I don’t like is the sense of entitlement some seem to be displaying. If you’ve been here 3 years does that give you more right to win than someone new? In fact it seemed like everything was running smoothly until this incident. Why was it fine until this point? Why is this so terrible to so many?

I hardly think of any of this as a "disaster". It's a competition that we all enter willingly. It's not the hanging balance of some corrupt government or something. I also don't think that me calling for people to chill out as being "blasé". I just don’t see it to be a catastrophe like you.

Regardless, I like to have rational conversations about things with you all. It’s nice to not have stupid scream matches. All comes down to opinions in the end. And like my dad used to say to me “opinions are like assholes - everyone’s got one, and yours stinks”.

I kid. If we ever meet, I’ll buy you a pint.

Cheers
