Since each color is printed with a separate screen and the printing machines can only handle a limited number of screens there is a limit on colors. However, different opacities of a color (halftoned) don't count as separate colors and in some cases an illusion of more colors can be achieved with a printing technique called simulated process.

You can use a million colors if you want and have it be printed as a process print.
I do like how when you keep it 8 colors or less they usually do screens, and I feel like the colors etc look better.
