The carrots can be there, I just think they need adjusting and not to be in the foreground so evenly.
At first I thought they were trees dotting the land below a giant dragon.
Maybe if you added one or two partially eaten carrots on the ground, it would put a bit of variation in the carrots' pattern.
The dragon design is great and I agree that you used the negative space very well.

I like the ideas put forward of having the carrots in a more organised vegetable patch style and some carrot-tops lying around from the ones he's already eaten. The idea of a knight hanging out with him is also cool, but I'm not sure if that would be good for the simple composition.
