Create a design inspired by the art of “it’s a small world.”

Vibrant colors and bold graphics helped make “it’s a small world” one of the most popular attractions of the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Your challenge is to design a t-shirt inspired by the mid-century style of renowned designer Mary Blair.* The simple patterns and shapes and childlike whimsy she used to create “it’s a small world” are as famous as the attraction they represent. If you’ve ever had the chance to visit one of the “it’s a small world” attractions and experience the music and scenes from all over the world, you should already have plenty of the inspiration! For those who haven’t yet had the chance to visit “it’s a small world,” click here to explore! The chosen design will be sold on Threadless.

*All designs should be the submitter's original work. In no way should Mary Blair's actual artwork be used in design submissions.

Introducing the Dogs of Threadless! Meet Billy.

Meet one of the dogs of Threadless! Today we’re meeting kahlen’s pup. Today’s her last day as Content Director at Threadless, and we’ll sure miss her and Billy!

Name, Age, Breed
William Murray Wilson aka Billy Murray. Age 2. Mix of Beagle and some kind of terrier. The Lady thinks I'm funny so she named me after the best funny human.

What department do you work in?
I'm not sure what a department is, but there are lots of "creative" smells.

What do you like most about Threadless?
Sniffing other dogs, eating pizza crumbs, ball.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
Once I was in a canoe with The Lady and I saw her hat fall into the water so I jumped out to swim after it but then I realized I was still attached to a leash then I realized I couldn't swim then I saw some other humans and barked at them and then they saved us. But I got the hat.

What hobbies or tricks do you have?
My favorite is whizzing where everyone else has whizzed. I also like cheese. Tricks include:
- sit (duh)
- spin around, which is when I spin around
- shake
- down
- roll over
- coming when The Lady calls me
- relax (which I am not very good at)

What was your life like before Threadless?
I was born in the streets on the south side of Chicago, and then The Lady brought me home and to work, too. I love the no dogscrimination policy at Threadless almost as much as I love pig ears!

Artist Spotlight: Katie Campbell, chosen designer from Threadless Loves YOU!

It’s true Katie Campbell aka campkatie is the designer of This is My Life, the chosen Threadless Loves YOU! tee. But she’s so much more than that. She’s a Floridian art student MOVIE STAR! Read all about it.

Tell us about this design (This Is My Life). How did you get the idea? How did you create it?
I originally designed This is My Life as a graphic for my homepage on my portfolio site. I wanted it to be simple, timeless and friendly. It just seemed perfect for the Loves YOU contest.

Tell us about the mediums and process you use to create art.
My best brainstorm sessions come when I'm driving. I have random sheets of paper and notes on my phone with ideas and sketches. Depending on what it is, I'll either dive straight into the computer, Illustrator or Photoshop or start drawing with charcoal and ink. Either way I usually make a mess in the beginning :) My best designs come from a strong beginning concept. I minored in painting in college, but unfortunately don't have as much time to put towards my fine art. Figurative Oil painting was my love.

What’s your favorite piece of art you created? What’s your favorite piece of art in your home?
An oil painting I did in college of my ex-girlfriend. We had to use a limited palette and I finished it in one day. Her hair is all crazy and I wrapped a scarf around her face so only her eyes and above are showing.
My fave art in my home is a print from the Polaroid Kid of a train hopper girl with an arrow in her mouth.

Tell us a little bit about where you grew up.
Tallahassee, FL. The armpit of Florida. Had a wide range of friends and was always busy playing sports and doing artsy things. If I wasn't playing a sport, I was watching my brother, dad or an FSU game. Weekends were spent swimming at either a pool, nearby beach or river.

Ever have a "15 minutes of fame"? What was it?
I was an extra in the Miley Cyrus movie, The Last Song. I'm a "hip shopper" during her musical montage while looking for the perfect dress.

What's something you believed in your childhood that you don't believe anymore?
money grows on trees

How often do you draw?
Everyday

Thanks for chattin’ Katie! We can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

Goodbye Slogan submissions, hello collabs!

Attention sloganeers!

We love the way you craftily glue words together to make hilarious phrases and pithy sentences. But after much thought, we’ve decided that slogans are kinda hard to judge without seeing them as part of a final design. So, we’re removing slogans submission and voting from Threadless.com.

What does this mean for all you witty wordsmiths out there? In order to judge slogans fairly, we want you to collab with artists and submit your slogans in finished designs so they can go through the normal voting process. This will give those people who score your slogans an idea of what the final tee will look like. (It also means that if you split the tee prizing 50/50, sloganeers get $1k instead of $500!)

Comment in this blog if you are a sloganeer who needs an artist or an artist who wants to bring some slogans to life! And good luck, collab-ers!

Congrats to Blair Sayer! His tee W.T.F.? was the chosen design from Threadless Loves Weird! Clearly, his design is worthy of such a title.

As is stated in the prizing, Blair now gets a video of members of the Threadstaff sitting in a circle brushing each other's hair.

Enjoy this Blair. You’ve earned it.

The inaugural Siricha Challenge

The kind of question that's only born in the late hours of a coding binge: Does Siricha make everything taste better?

After a quick run to Jewel for supplies, the order of the challengers was set:

When the random number is 42, you know it's going to be a good day.

First up was Scott, who chose mango, which seemed like a safe choice:

"Absolutely foul"
And a terrible start to our plan.

Dan was next. not only making a brave choice with applesauce, but saturating it:

"It has the same effect as Cinnamon. I'd eat it again, but with less Siricha"

Next was Shaun, with a chocolate-covered, creme filled donut:

"This is so good!"

Easily the best food of the challenge, Shaun went back for seconds:

Betsy crashed our tech-only party to try the mango/Siricha combo:

"Not bad."

I was next, and I had been eyeing the yogurt with Oreo:

It tasted like an Indian dessert. Really, really good.

Down to the dregs, Isaac went for the generic frosted wheat cereal:

It's like I'm making sushi

"Crunchy with a curious mix of satisfying sweetness and arousing spice."

And finally, fittingly, our newest techie, AJ, went last, stuck with the dreaded "Gel" cup:

"Are you sure you took the plastic film off?"

"No. No. No."

The takeaway? Siricha tastes good on anything that doesn't contain fruit. Tell your friends.

We're looking for food items for the next challenge. Drop some ideas in the comments.

Howdy Threadspotters,

This week’s Threadspotting post comes to us from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. A few fans spotted a tee by the Thread-lific (Threadless + prolific) artist, Budi Satria Kwan! The Threadspotting comes during a segment about the debate concerning the exact moment a new life begins. Treacherous waters, I know, but that’s never stopped Jon Stewart and company before!

Hey guys, it's me Jake!!! Remember a while back when we asked you to design the words “Make Great Together” in new and interesting ways? I then used a bunch of the "Make" illustrations in a presentation at TEDxBoulder I gave titled Never Stop Making. Well, we thought it'd be fun to do something just like that again.

This time, however, we want you to just focus on the word “Make.” Show us, using the letters M, A, K & E what inspires you to make stuff, what stuff you like to make, or what you want to see made.

When we’re done, we’ll pick a bunch of our favorites and they’ll be used for a whole bunch of different things. I'm giving a follow up presentation to "Never Stop Making" in Sydney in June which will incorporate them. I'm also considering turning it into a book of a series of learnings centered around making. We may even create a whole series of MAKE tees* from the designs!

Submit your designs in the comments of this blog by Friday, May 25. Don't forget to save the hi-res! We can’t wait to see how you make “MAKE.”

* If your illustration does get selected to be made into a tee, we will be paying our small-batch payment of $250 + 10% royalty on every sale.

Space-Time! by Jeffrey Brown is launching today! Space-Time! began as a segment of a children's science-oriented TV show. The show featured humans and aliens traveling to explore the universe beyond the Milky Way galaxy and interspersed science experiments and factual information with segments of their adventure. Later, after the show was cancelled, the license was bought by a comic book publisher, and the comic book series Space-Time! focused on a new storyline of the explorers attempting to reach the Andromeda Galaxy. Despite planning on a three hundred issue journey with the team arriving in the Andromeda Galaxy in the last issue, the series ran for only 53 issues before being cancelled. But we’re bringing it back on tees! Each t-shirt in Space Time Comics-Ons Tees Vol. 5 corresponds to issues of the series.

Meet the Characters:
Commander Konstantinov: The male human mission commander
Commander Nancy: The female human mission commander
Txlolgt: A small highly intelligent alien who serves as the ship's engineer and mechanic
Fein: a hermaphroditic alien scientist
Grof: A huge furry alien who acts as the team's muscle and heavy lifter
HowbyBowby: A young alien prodigy who leads the team's research projects
ST-7: A robot who records the mission and takes on tasks too dangerous for biological team members

Tee 1: Across Space-Time by Jeffrey Brown
The first issue of Space-Time! established the crew and their mission, ending with them boarding their ship which would launch from earth's moon. Featuring members from most of the intelligent life forms across the milky way, the crew's mission is to travel to and explore the andromeda galaxy.

Front: The team of explorers walk across the boarding gantry to the ship, waving and smiling. Each is highlighted with a close-up shot.
The excitement is tangible as the best scientists from across the milky way begin their historic mission - to travel to another galaxy!

Back: As the team approaches the ship they seem unclear how to open the door to board.
Commander Konstantinov: So we just. Um.
St-7: Here we go.
Txlolgt: Don't put pressure on yourself, that makes it worse.
Commander Nancy: Maybe we're supposed to wait...?
St-7(raising arms): This is going to be great.
Grof scratches his head.

Tee 2: Space Travel Is Mostly Boring by Paul Hornschemeier
Issue #17 of Space-Time! was anonymously guest written (fans speculate about which sci-fi novelist is the probable author of the issue) and is known as the most cerebral and philosophical issue of the series, focusing on the realities of long-term space travel.

Front:Aboard the ship, the team sits listlessly and bored, staring out at the endless expanse of space. Suddenly, a warning klaxon wails, and the crew rushes to the controls under emergency red lighting. They study the readings on the computers.
Commander Nancy: what's happening?
Fein: We're off course!
Txlolgt: Some kind of quantum mechanical interaction at launch...
Commander Konstantinov: Look, launch was only off by less than a planck length. That's not much.

Back:
Fein: that'll have us end up forty thousand light years away from our destination.
Txlolgt: we'll need to calculate the correction, as well as analyze possible effects on the ship, and -
St-7 presses a button.
Button: beep.
The crew all look at st-7. Running parallel to all of this action is a simple two-dimensional diagram of the ship flying through space with a dotted line indicating flight path. The ship makes a very slight left turn.

Tee 3: The Universe Is Trying To Stop Us by Jeff Lemire
With sales flagging, the creative team behind issue #41 of Space-Time! took drastic measures and wrote a character out of the series. The gimmick worked and so a few issues later, another character left the series; by issue #49 only ST-7 and Commander K were left, although the editors made sure none of the characters were explicitly killed off, leaving room for them to return later, perhaps hoping that the unknown possibility would help maintain readers' interest.

Commander Konstantinov is pulling up a roughed up fein from the ground. Surrounding them, the team looks like it's just been through a battle.
Fein: thanks...
Commander Konstantinov: of course. We're a team, we stick together...

What follows is a montage of characters leaving in different ways. Commander Nancy marries an alien they meet. Txlolgt is looking at the surface of an asteroid "No, really, you guys go on, I'll catch up." Grof is carried off by even larger aliens who have thrown him over their shoulder, like a stolen bride kind of scene. Fein is sucked into a black hole. Howbybowby is talking to his mother. "But mom, I can't come home yet, we're not even to andromeda. But. But mom... It's not fair!"

At the end, only Commander Konstantinov and ST-7 are left.
St-7: "Go team?"

Tee 4: The Planets Our Destination by Anders Nilsen
Despite a double-sized issue #50 selling fairly well, it was clear that Space-Time!'s days were numbered, and the announcement came that the series would end with issue #53. The final issue was rewritten to have Commander Konstantinov and ST-7 arrive on a life-supporting planet in the Andromeda Galaxy, completing their mission.

Front: The space ship has landed on an alien planet full of beautiful and strange life, plants and animals.

Commander Konstantinov and ST-7 exit the ship, and look upon the strange world, their mission finally complete.

Back: Commander Konstantinov takes off his helmet.
Commander Konstantinov: "It's... Beautiful. We made it."
ST-7 , standing beside Commander Konstantinov , raises his robot arm a little.
ST-7 : "High five."

Submit to the Comics-On Tees Vol. 6 Design Challenge

Your Challenge: Design the first tee in "The Day The Saucers Came" Comics-On Tees Vol. 6

If you’ve ever wanted to work alongside the likes of big-name comic book somebodies, now is your chance! Your challenge is to design the first tee in our next Comics-On Tees series. The script was written by Neil Gaiman, the first author to win both the Newbery and the Carnegie medals for the same work, and the author of The Sandman, Stardust and Coraline. The Day The Saucers Came has everything a compelling story should: zombies, aliens, and giants feefofumming across the land.

Use the story below to design the front and the back of the t-shirt. Maybe you’d like to incorporate parts of it in word bubbles, or maybe you’d like to design only using illustration. We encourage you to use your own style to interpret the story, so it’s up to you. Check out our past Comics-On Tees volumes to see how we’ve printed similar tees in the past. The chosen t-shirt will be sold on Threadless as part of Comics-On Tees Vol. 6, and 25% of the sale of each tee will go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Front:
That day, the saucers landed. Hundreds of them, golden,
Silent, coming down from the sky like great snowflakes,
And the people of Earth stood and stared as they descended,
Waiting, dry-mouthed to find what waited inside for us
And none of us knowing if we would be here tomorrow
But you didn't notice it because

Back:
That day, the day the saucers came, by some coincidence,
Was the day that the graves gave up their dead
And the zombies pushed up through soft earth
or erupted, shambling and dull-eyed, unstoppable,
Came towards us, the living, and we screamed and ran,
But you did not notice this because

Up for Grabs:

- Your work printed on Comics-On Tees Vol. 6 alongside artists Ben Templesmith, Brandon Graham, and John Cassaday
- $750 cash
- $250 Threadless gift card
- 2012 CBLDF Protector Membership
- Signed and numbered Paul Pope Screened Print
- Print Featuring The Day the Saucers Came script, signed and sketched by author Neil Gaiman
- 4 CHEW comics signed by John Layman

And there’s more! Ben Templesmith, Brandon Graham, and John Cassaday are designing tees two, three, and four. Here’s a bit more about these comic book artists and the rest of The Day The Saucers Came.

Ben Templesmith illustrated 30 Days of Night, which went on to become a feature film. His comic book work has received multiple nominations for the International Horror Guild Awards as well as the industry’s top prize, the Eisner Award. He also won a Spike TV Scream Award. Fun fact: He was raised as an orphan by monks and studied marine biology and design.

Shirt 2, Front:
On the saucer day, which was the zombie day, it was
Ragnarok also, and the television screens showed us
A ship built of dead-man's nails, a serpent, a wolf,
All bigger than the mind could hold, and the cameraman could
Not get far enough away, and then the Gods came out
But you did not see them coming because

Shirt 2, Back:
On the saucer-zombie-battling gods day, the floodgates broke
And each of us was engulfed by genies and sprites
Offering us wishes and wonders and eternities
And charm and cleverness and true brave hearts and pots of gold
While giants feefofummed across the land, and killer bees,
But you had no idea of any of this because

Brandon Graham created the manga-inspired King City, the Escalator short comics stories, Universe So Big, adult comics Pillow Fight and Perverts of the Unknown, and is currently working on Multiple Warheads. Fun fact: He’s a graffiti artist turned comic book artist. He is not a football player.

Shirt 3, Front:
That day, the saucer day the zombie day
The Ragnarok and fairies day, the day the great winds came
And snows, and the cities turned to crystal, the day
All plants died, plastics dissolved, the day the
Computers turned, the screens telling us we would obey, the day

Shirt 3, Back:
Angels, drunk and muddled, stumbled from the bars,
And all the bells of London were sounded, the day
Animals spoke to us in Assyrian, the Yeti day,
The fluttering capes and arrival of the Time Machine day,

John Cassaday worked on Planetary with Warren Ellis, for which he won Won Best Penciller/Inker Eisner Award. He’s also won Eisner Awards for stories in Hellboy: Weird Tales and for for Astonishing X-Men with Joss Whedon. Fun fact: He was a concept artist for the 2009 Watchmen film.

Shirt 4, Front:
You didn't notice any of this because
you were sitting in your room, not doing anything
not even reading, not really, just
looking at your telephone,

Shirt 4, Back:
wondering if I was going to call.

A few weeks ago we removed thousands of tees from inventory because they weren’t up to our quality standards. Rather than just throw the discarded tees in a landfill, we’ve been coming up with ways to use them in fun and useful ways. Since we’re coming up on Earth Day, we thought we’d start with some super green projects!

On Thursday, April 26th we’ll be hosting a Tee Upcycling Worldwide Meetup! Along with hosting right here at Threadless HQ in Chicago, we invite all of you to find a place where you can gather and make cool new stuff out of old tees!

Here’s how it works: Choose a place and time for your city’s meetup on April 26th. If you have at least 8 people RSVP’d by this Friday, April 13th*, send a request with your address and a link to your meetup page to community@threadless.com and we’ll send you a DIY Meetup Kit filled with the tees we pulled from inventory, DIY instructions, and a few extra prizes. (This event will be BYOSSR - Bring your own scissors, safety pins, and rulers.)

On the day, remember to post comments and photos! We can wait to see how creative you get with your projects! Use #threadlessupcyle. We’ll check out the photos and award one lucky Meetup a $25 gift code for each attendee. So grab your pals, scissors, and cameras so your Meetup can score more Threadless swag!

Th(reddit)ers,

You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind; a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead - your next stop, the Threadspot Zone!

As some of you may know, donning a latex horse mask in public grants the adorner with confusing and magical powers. In this edition of Threadspotting, a thrill-seeking horse has been captured on film wearing its favorite Threadless gear moments before plunging 18 stories from Disney’s Tower of Terror and muzzle-first into the alternate reality known as Reddit. Check it:

Crazy stuff, right!? Do you own a horse mask? Where’s your favorite place to wear it? Discuss.

Thanks to Tyler and Connor for pointing out this gem - we’ve notified your employer to block Reddit from your work computers. Remember, as always, if you see Threadless tees in the wild, send us a note at sightings@threadless.com and we'll talk about them here... AND we'll give you some Street Team Points to boot! Where Ya Got it: At a non-profit bike cooperative in Chicago called Working Bikes. They repair old bikes and ship them to underserved communities of Chicago, Africa and Central, and South America. They also sell repaired bikes to people like me to fund their programming! For many of the communities the organization serves, a bike can be the difference between work and unemployment.
Favorite Threadless Bike Tee: Missing!!! is a favorite, but the one I'm wearing, Fix Yourself a Fixie is a goodie too.

Design a freakin' Freaker!

Drinking a cold beverage is a challenge. Your hands get cold. Your drink gets warm. Everything is the opposite as it should be. Yes, of course there are koozies, but they don’t fit on every can, bottle, and jug. And the design on your standard koozie tends to lack that conversation starting, fun loving, je ne sais quoi.

We now challenge you help us eliminate substandard koozies by designing your own! We’re partnering with Freaker USA, the brains behind the one-size-fits all drink sweaters. Before you start, check out the Freaker submission kit so you can create a Freaker worthy design. Keep in mind your design must be limited to 4 colors from the palette provided. Keep your design simple. Remember, this is knitted, not printed. You can also check out the Freakers we have for sale for a few examples of what works well.

People all over the world could be soon holding your design in their freakin’ hands, so get to it!

Don't know what a freaker is? Check out this video:

Since the beginning of time, we’ve released new designs Monday and reprinted designs Thursday. Starting today, we’re trying something new.

Instead of releasing designs twice a week, we’ll be releasing one new tee and one reprinted tee today, one of each tomorrow, one of each the next day... we think you know where we’re going with this.

You all put a lot of work into making and scoring designs. So we’re trying to do a better job at highlighting those designs as they come out. By featuring one new and reprinted tee each day of the week, we’ll give some extra special love to the designs. (We won't be releasing tees on Saturdays and Sundays, because we don't like to work weekends either!)

If you’re as excited about this new release schedule as we are, you can celebrate by wearing a different Threadless tee every day. But chances are, you already do that. So instead, you can do the t-shirt shimmy! (We don’t know what that is either, but it’s just ASKING to be invented.)
