Since Threadless has started, we've always been less than 100% satisfied with the tees we've printed on. Some people really like how American Apparel is cut, some like Fruit of the Loom better. Some people like Fruit's weight better, some people like AA better. We've spent the last 18 months checking out some of the best tees on the planet and still remained dissatisfied with our options. The decision was made to start looking into creating our own private-label tees!

Over the past 6 months, we've been working with a Los Angeles-based manufacturer to create a Threadless-specific tee shirt. These shirts are based on our experience as a tee shirt company, and the feedback we've gotten from our community since the beginning of Threadless. Imagine a tee that is less boxy than a Fruit of the Loom, but not as skinny as an American Apparel. Imagine a tee whose fabric is softer than American Apparel but not as thin. Are you starting to get the picture? Isn't this exciting?! On our end, the advantages of this are endless. We can guarantee that all of the colors we get aren't re-dyed, allowing us to add printing processes like discharge to our abilities full-time. We can guarantee that we have a color palette of 20-colors available to us at all times. The possibilities for customization are endless. Plus, we can adjust specifications based upon feedback from the community. Our private-label manufacturing will be producing all garments for us including Guys, Girls, Kids, Longsleeves, and Hoodies! After 6 successful years working with suppliers and middlemen, it's time to cut the cord and go direct to the source!

One important logistical issue that we'd like to point out is that there will be a period of time where we'll have a mixture of the older-style tees and the new-style tees available at the same time. We will make it 100% clear which tee you're buying on the product page until the transition is complete. We hope everyone loves these new tees as much as we do. We're so confident that you will! To get things rolling with this, we'll be releasing one special tee tomorrow using our new tees! Keep your eye out for that!!

From there we're going to be rolling out Girly tees in the new style in right around the new year, while the Guys stock is being produced. Kids and Guys should launch around the same time. We'll keep you guys posted with all the details!

Yay!

The new template must be coming out pretty soon if they're rolling out girly designs in the new year (I assume that means early January). That would mean that designs subbing as soon as... now, could be up for printing on the new tees.

Maybe they'll make it available tomorrow along with the new tee.

This is amazing! I'll have to buy one tomorrow just to see how the new shirts fit.

So the girly shirts are stretchier & softer than the current A.A. ones?

Lastly... please say that the girly shirts won't be as short (length-wise) as the A.A. shirts. Honestly AA is almost like belly shirts they're so short.
iFDL
   iFDL on Nov 21 '06 at 3:59pm
HERE'S THE DEAL WITH PRICING!

The girly tees will remain the same price. We're still negotiating with the manufacturer to see where our final price will be for guys, so the answer is that guys tees may increase by a dollar or two, but we don't know yet. The select tees will remain the same price as will long sleeves and hoodies.

Price is very advantageous for you. Once, I have bought a nice and soft plain shirt for P50. That's $1.

pyr4lis
pyr4lis on Nov 21 '06 at 11:11pm
Lol yeah the shirt lengths for girls are probably ok for girls on the more petite 5'4" and under height. But the average woman is 5' 7" and needs another inch or two more than what A.A. offers.

Also keep in mind A.A. sizes are not for grown women.. they are JUNIORS sizes ment to fit young teens. Young teens tend to be shorter than grown adults.
margolove

Girls tees are long on me currently. I only just scrape 5' 3", but do have a pretty ample bosom. With a print that covers the bottom part of the tee - like mapple vs. apy or all of the tee, like house of freaks, I tend to find the bottom part just gets crumpled up on itself and if you want to see if fully I have to stretch the shirt down over my hips!

I do like the longer, but any longer than AA shirts and they'll pretty much be minidress's for me!

Ya i guess im on the fence with this because i love American Apparel's shirts because of the length, softeness of the cotten, and most importantly that they are made in the states without any outsorcing to developing counties, sweatshops ect. It's all crafted and manufactured upholding those rights.

If threadless's new brand isn't similare no matter how cute the shirt, i would no longer purchase them.

More info in that regard would be helpful since so many customers/buyers are attracted to American Apparel for those reasons.

i love my AA stuff though... it fits perfectly except its slightly baggy cause im a medium but i buy a large cause of the waist area (i got a bit of a belly). and the weight is perfect and they last a long time and theyre all about the same size, though my brown and black shirts are slightly tighter and my light blue and natural shirts are a bit loose... and the sleeves are perfect and so is the neck.

but they generally fit me perfectly, so im a bit dissapointed.

these new shirts better be kick ass!
asher27
asher27 on Nov 24 '06 at 1:09am
ah shit i just looked at the size chart...
the new girly shirts are gonna be shorter and wider, while i needed the opposite. you cant wear low rise jeans (which is really all that they sell these days) and a somewhat short t shirt cause then your ass like hangs out... thats what i liked about the AA shirts was caused they covered your lower back when you sat unlike other shirts.
pyr4lis
pyr4lis on Nov 24 '06 at 1:14am
Yes I am concerned now 0_O The new size chart says girly mediums are 24.5 inches long and that the A.A size chart says the same size is 26 inches long. BIG problem for me since A.A. shirts are far too short.

In an earlier question by me I asked: Lastly... please say that the girly shirts won't be as short (length-wise) as the A.A. shirts. Honestly AA is almost like belly shirts they're so short.

And up above iFDL replied to my comment: Yes, the length is certainly something we fixed.

How has it been fixed?? It looks like they're an inch and a half shorter than A.A. I refuse to buy a larger looser fit just to have length.

I'm very concerned now and hope that someone from Threadless will clairify if the new shirts are in fact significantly shorter than A.A. and how that "fixed" any problem??

It seems to me the biggest concern from a larger portion of the threadless community is that the girly shirts were too short. Unfortunately if they are actually shorter than the A.A. (as the new size chart claims) I will no longer be able to buy threadless shirts as I physically can't wear anything shorter than A.A.

The thing I like about this new step is the pallette, being of the same color for both gender.

But I think some of my questions ain't answered yet (or I'm just lazy to read the other comments):

1. Will this end the "same shirt size different shirt size" dillema? (ex. I bought two diff Guys Small shirts, but I got one smaller and the other one a bit larger)

2. Will they have seamed sides?

Yeah I'm 5'7"-5'8" and the AA shirts barely skim the top of my jeans waist band. Occationally I'll get a gold or a cream colored shirt that it a little longer... but I can't even wear my "bunnies" shirt because it's freakishly short.

I'm going to hold off on panicking right now because in another sizing blog Shimala had stated that there were some errors made on the new size charts and that he was taking the charts down to be fixed.

Just one advice:

For a 6' tall, not fat, guy like me who doesn't like skinny "metrosexual" fit, be sure that the thsirts shipped follow the chart.

Because in Large you look a bit "lost" (too large), and in Medium (if just little smaller than on charts) it gives you that "metrosexual" style (too small).

Just to say that ordering Medium is always a "risk", and that on a 4 tshirst batch I once ordered, I had to return 2. Yeah, they were not all the same size...
And you know how I hate customs fees?! ;)

BTW, I too love Threadless ! :)

You should sell Blank T-s. There are companies (including the one that I work for) that want to buy massive amounts of T-shirts for their own projects. Supporting Hanes doesn't allow us to make sure they are sweatshop free. With AA and we trade sweatshops for well documented misogyny. Smaller producers provide limited colors. It would be great to have another option...

I just got the I heart threadless shirt and I'm disappointed. I noticed immediately that its huge compared to the three other shirts I got (pillowfight, haikus are easy and she doesnt even realize) . I've always been able to throw on a shirt right out of the bag and have it fit perfectly but this new shirt is way long and baggy. I've never been disappointed by the fit of any of my shirts but if this is how the new shirts are going to be I'm really going to question getting them. Us larger girls need girlie style t-shirts that fit us! We need a t-shirt that flatters our figure, holds our large boobs, a length that isn't stomach hugging nor baggy and sleeves that are not too long or short :)

Anyone else with me or would like to add??

The shirts are a bit short and thin, and they are smaller than AA, but other than that, I like them.

No one's said a word about any organic options that might be possible. I'd love the option to buy an organic Threadless shirt. If not 100% maybe mostly organic cotton and a little lycra...that's how Twice Shy does it. I'd pay the higher cost. Maybe for Earth Day Threadless could have an organic sale. What do you think Threadless and community?

Any chance you will be making girlie tees in larger sizes? I know many larger women who would like to buy your shirts but I'm a 14/16 and the girlie XL is almost too small. Men's XL and 2X just aren't flattering on many women.

Agreed! Please Threadless make bigger girly tees!

I bought one of the new shirts, and once they start using these it will be the last Threadless tee I buy, unfortunately. It is longer and skinnier than the fruit of the loom tees, which fit me perfectly. Oh well.

my new heart threadless tee was actually about an inch wider than the rest of the FOTL larges that came in the same shipment. i was surprised it was so baggy.
kevinwells
kevinwells on Jan 03 '07 at 2:56pm
it was so baggy, in fact, that i was considering returning it for a medium.

but my experience with the FOTL's larges shows they vary greatly and can be that baggy from time to time, but mediums tend to be too tight.

so i figured i shouldn't risk it incase the new mediums are too tight too

davidd on Jan 03 '07 at 2:57pm
Did you wash it yet kevin?
kevinwells
kevinwells on Jan 03 '07 at 2:59pm
oh, no, i haven't. i really only tried it on real quick to see how it fit.

i'm sure it'll shrink some in the wash and fit better. i was just surprised it was so much wider than the FOTL larges that were in the same order, since i thought the new shirts were trying to be more like AA, which are much narrower.

as far as the material goes, it's very nice and soft. i loved that part.

BUT, tbh I prefere the old ones. The new one is much bigger and its thinner. I liked the thickness of the old one and how it fitted me perfectly. I'll try buying the smaller size but it might be too small.

I just hope the shirts aren't super thin and stretchy. In my experience, 100% cotton is never good. Sure it is soft, but you can get soft poly blends. The shrinking is expected and fine but sometimes cotton opposed to poly can shrink again and again after the first wash. My main concern is the thickness of the shirt though. I like the FOTL now for that...they fit me fine except they can be a little long but I don't mind. I just hope these cotton shirts aren't see through like some I own because the fabric is soooo stretched out!

It's funny to read the comments.

But I agree. I need some nice cotton, that is adjusted to shrink, that will hold my bits and pieces in with out being ill-fitted, that is not so thin you could see through to China, or another country on the other side of the world.

I wonder how much longer before Threadless gives us an update on the new shirts?? Jan 3rd Shimala said they made changes but I'd like to know what those changes are.

Personally I'm with Julie here. A long and lean shirt looks best on most people. And longer is ALWAYS better becasue if you need it shorter you can always hem it. If a shirt is too short those of use who NEED the length are just screwed. It's not like we can wave a magic wand and make the shirts get longer to fit us.

I had a blog awhile ago about fit (for girls sizes anyways)

Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Mar 08 '07 at 1:58pm
Also, pyr4lis, with regards to the length... I agree with you in theory, with the caveat that it only works if the design is at the top. If a shirt is massively long and has a design placed at the bottom, then shorter people can't just hem it. Your long post was very useful, though.

To add to the discussion, if the new tees are pretty much the same size around the neck/chest/shoulder but tighter around the waist, that's would make for a better fit for me since I have broad shoulders and a narrow waist.

What also adds to this better fit is DECREASE in length; since I am 5'0" the AA tees that I own bunch up like crazy as you can imagine. It's obvious that I'm a minority (5'0"-5'4" is mainstream petite, after all), but I feel like I need to counter those who are opting for more length (those who are dissatisfied are more likely to voice their opinion than those who are not). With my starving-student income level and lifestyle, it would take a lot of time and money on top of it all to have it adjusted. Also, as others have voiced, wrap around designs would automatically be out of the question. And since kids tees are cut differently from women tees, buying children's sizes won't suffice unless I'm a guy (assuming that children sizes mirror the proportions of guy sizes), which I'm not.

For those who are already wearing an AA XL, I can see the need for Threadless to make some adjustments in stock, such as adding XXL, perhaps, but not make adjustments on the proportions itself. I've noticed a lot of people say that the shirts are too short, and that's because the new sizing is supposed to allow people who aren't super thin to get a better fit (it helps out the short people, too).

What doesn't make sense to me is hearing people complain simply about having to "size up" from wearing, say, a medium to wearing a large. Why does the size designation matter? It should be how well the particular cut fits the body. It's not like the size is going to be advertised over the front of the shirt (and even if it was, sizing varies between manufacturers, anyway; the names are just convention for certain measurements). It's not like switching from an AA medium to a Threadless large means that you've just become a large person.

Sorry for unearthing old topics, but I think this is important.

I also agree with Jwalsh! Long... lightweight... with the girlier cut! Essentially what I've been begging for all along.

I do however like that the new girly shirts have more room in the neckline. I pull on my neckline all the time because it's so tight and close to my neck. I also pull on the hemline alot too because they're short for me... and I usually end up tearing the threads and causing the shirt to unravel. :(

I find it really troublesome how they are sidestepping the issue of the conditions under which these shirts are manufactured. In the other thread they merely said that they are made by the same people that makes Disney's shirts, which not a great idea considering the number of on the record labor violations that disney's manufacturers have committed. It is incredibly naive to believe that Disney wouldn't use sweatshops, and I don't believe for a second that anyone actually believes that.
