One of the main goals we had in creating Threadless stores was to be able to have real, live, tangible events around the launching of new tees every week. We release 8 or 9 new and reprinted designs every single week which is quite unique in the apparel industry. Right now the launching of the tees takes place online every Monday.

We've printed nearly 1,000 designs since the beginning of Threadless in November of 2000. About 300 or so of those are in stock right now. It would be very difficult for us to have all of those designs in the store. We decided to focus the store on just the newest 2 weeks worth of designs plus a few exclusives, starting with the Glennz/Arzie13 tee. There will only be 20 designs for sale in the store at any given moment. Each of the 20 designs gets its own special area complete with an LCD display cycling through various photos and close-ups of the design, comments from the original submission and other rad stuff. The designs for sale will change weekly, as will the store window.

The kicker is that - at the store - we will be launching the new tees the Friday before they get released on the website. While you won't have access to our entire catalog from the store, you will have a head-start on what comes out on the website.

Keep in mind that the store will only be receiving a small portion of what we actually create, so there is no way that a design would sell out in the store and not make it to the website. The website will always have inventory on Mondays whether things sell out over the weekend in the store or not. Also, WE DO PLAN ON OPENING STORES IN OTHER CITIES. I know with all of this awesomeness happening in Chicago a lot of you are probably feeling left out. Well, if Chicago does well, we'll work our little hineys off to get more stores opened around the world as quickly as we can ;) But sorry 'A Markets,' we think Threadless stores make more sense in smaller, artsy communities like San Francisco, Austin, Seattle, Boulder, Columbus, Boston, Minneapolis, or Savannah...

BTW, we're totally fine with our Chicago customers leaking the designs with photos taken in the store and such. We hope it'll be a fun set of conversations in the blogs over the weekend before the designs come out online.

I got to say, if Threadless ever comes to Australia, I would totally consider changing my career path, and applying for a job there, provided it happens before I consider retirement hah!

Well my current job is helping me pay for all these Threadless stuff, and as long as Threadless is still available online, I'm happy - nice getting parcels of goodness. I'm real happy for the folks who will get to visit the store in Chicago, awesome stuff. I actually had a dream about a Threadless store with LCD screens, shelves of awesome T's. Reading this totally freaked me out.

Sydney or Melbourne definitely would be the choice cities in Australia. Actually I'll go with Melbourne, got that euro feel to the city, and its the home of brands like Crumpler and Mooks.

But Emma, I agree Sydney is nice city too. Any shop in Oz would be cool, I'd even visit Perth, if there was a Threadless store, and its my least favourite major city in Australia.

Oh yeah. Becasue it sold out, because it's awesome. Arienne and Bramish, are you two making out again?! You're meant to be stock checking! Why is there nobody on the till Raid71 and wotto?

the philippines is still cheap and cheerful. Manila is the place to be... (10 years from now? :) )

maybe there could be SOME weeks where released designs revolve around a theme. what do you think? :) Ie. a very blue week, where all shirts are printed on blue, or a week where Asian-inspired designs will be printed.

BTW, the design of threadless's frontpage this sale is so amazing! That was a loongpictorial session, huh? Grats!

If you opened a store in St. Louis (perhaps in emerging arts communities like Cherokee St. and Washington Ave., or in more established ones like South Grand, the Loop, and Central West End), the shirts would sell well and tons of new people would buy Threadless shirts. A store in some cities would mostly just transfer online customers to retail customers. Having moved to San Francisco, I see tons of people wearing Threadless shirts already. They'd go from being online customers to being retail customers. It'd also be cool to open in communities that don't currently have a lot of people submitting designs to Threadless so that you put your name out there to hundreds of new, fresh designers.

But, if you don't open in St. Louis, I'll be perfectly content being one of the few wearing awesome, conversation-starting Threadless shirts when I move back there.

Oh my God, the store looks awesome!!! I wished I lived in Chicago -.-

Anyway, why not open a store down in Miami, eh? We wear t-shirts all year round ^_^

Yes, this will be successful. Then, build one in Boulder. I will be forever pleased.

Any chance of going overseas, ever? Prerably Belgium. Brussels, or Antwerp for the sake of artsy.
Or the Netherlands. Eindhoven pref.

I'm sorry, but I think the artsy thing is pretty strange. Excludes a lot of people. Oh well, first find the money for one other store, good luck!

yay for all of the bostonians and boston supporters!!!
Maltzmania had it right, suggesting newbury street, compete with that assclown johnny cupcakes who sells his tees for $45.

another great location could be harvard square, cambridge?!?- although not the tourist attraction that quincy market or newbury street is

I think we need another one in Chicago first. The location of this one is a pain in the ass to get to.

WOO! Congrats on the Chicago store :] I'm a student at the Savannah College of Art and Design...it would be so awesome to have a Threadless store downtown, and awesome for the savannah community as well.
A suggestion actually, I love how you have an artist doing the store paintings every week, but it wold also be cool to get various local artists to do them sometimes as well. It would be a great promotion for the store as well as helping local art communities.

I went to the store today, and I LOVE it. It's pretty tiny, they carry a couple different designs, and the hoodies. (I bought one ^_^) I love it cause it's in a wonderful area of town I've never been in before, and it's not huge. It's not like this is a new trend on the block, or it's crowded with people. It's still threadless, so I reccomend everyone take the trip (and stop down the street for some yummy pop corn!)

I think if they opened up a threadless store in Austin I'd crap myself from excitement. I live an hour and a half from there and would totally make the trip.
