Hi everyone! Jeffrey here. I know everyone has been very patiently and anxiously awaiting news of what's going on with Threadless making our own tees. Last November, I posted this blog. In it I said that we'd be using our own brand of tees by January 2007 and the rest would come soon after. Jeesh, that certainly didn't happen, huh?! So, I'd like to tell you guys what happened with that, as well as give you the full update about what's to come...

Let's get up to speed...

To begin with, there has been no point in the last year that we haven't been working our little patoots off trying to get this project done. As I said in the last news about this, we were working with a manufacturer in LA who was making our kids stuff, longsleeves, and hoodies. We weren't able to have them make our Girly and Guys tees domestically because the cost was just out of this world. The plan was to use that manufacturer's international facility (in Honduras) to produce all the Girly and Guys tees, and have them ready to go by early 2007. We went back and forth a LOT on the cut, fabric, etc (if anyone has ever made custom garments with no experience, you'll know this is a SSLLOOWW process). Once we decided on a garment we were happy with, we were ready to pull the trigger with the Honduras production. Long story short, the picture painted for us by our LA manufacturer wasn't as pretty as he had us believe, and we weren't able to use them to make tees overseas. Talk about having the rug pulled out from under us!

This happened this past April. It was so incredibly disappointing for us mostly because we had made promises about when the tees would come out that we couldn't keep. Then to add insult to injury, we found out that we were being lied to about the overall capabilities of who we had put so much time into working with. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, however. The rep who we were using to maintain the relationship between us and our LA manufacturer brought another manufacturer to the table within one day of the fallout. As it turned out, this new company (based on the East Coast) is bigger, better, and generally kick-ass in every way imaginable. It took us about 2 weeks to decide to work with them after seeing what they can do. This took care of our overseas manufacturing. The issue at that point was that we no longer wanted to work with our LA manufacturer because there now existed a pretty major trust issue. Our beloved printer, SOB, brought an incredible domestic manufacturer to the table who we decided to use. So, within 6 weeks of the bad news, we're back on track with 2 amazing companies. So like I said, a blessing in disguise.

Ok, so what now?

Here's where we're at today - Wednesday June 6th 2007. We have a finalized spec of custom-made girly tees, guys tees, longsleeves, kids tees, onesies, hoodies, kids-sized hoodies (yep, kids-sized hoodies!), and a brand-new-ultra-awesome new kids' product that we're keeping a secret for right now. Not only that, but our tees and longsleeves will come in 22 colors. And what's better, the Guys and Girly products will come out in the same colors! FINALLY! One other amazing new thing we'll be able to offer, is with our domestic manufacturer, we'll be able to offer CUSTOM COLOR SHORT SLEEVE TEES for our Select program. OMG! So, a Select designer can tell us what Pantone color to match the tee color to for his or her design. INSANE!

What's really cool is the way we're going to be doing our tagging as well. We're still going to be using the printed designer/design information tag on the inside, but that will now be located at the lower right-side of the tee. In the neck, we'll have custom-made Threadless tags. We did this primarily because we had to. In order to legally import goods from outside of the US, there had to be information clearly visible to the inspectors. That information is brand, size, material and origin. Here's a mock-up of what the tags will look like...

So, tell me about where everything is being made...

The Guys and Girls short-sleeve tees are being made in Bangladesh. Our manufacturer works in partnership with the owner of this facility. It's a $100 million facility that was built in 1996. The owner of the facility was nice enough to fly all the way to our office for a meeting. He's an incredibly well-respected manufacturer. We were pretty concerned at first about the conditions of the factory, how they treat their workers etc. We were assured that everything about this facility is 100% legit by American standards. One way to know he's being honest is that he produces a HUGE amount of product for Disney. By industry standards, Disney has the most stringent standards of any company in the world. Their reputation depends on it. Can you imagine if Disney used a facility that treated their workers unfairly to make Mickey Mouse tees for kids?! I was also invited to Bangladesh in August to tour the facility. I'm yet undecided if I'll go, due to time constraints, but our manufacter will be there, so he'll take pics which we'll post here when he gets back.

The Longsleeves, Kids tees, Onesies and Hoodies will be made domestically on the East Coast.

Ok, ok, but when do we get 'em!?

Here's our timeline. By September, we'll be using our new tees for all Threadless Select designs. We'll also be doing a special design on the new tees which will only be available at our retail store (which opens in July/August) and at our warehouse. Right after the new year, 2008, we'll be in full production of our own tees and will no longer be using AA or FOTL. I know it may seem like there is a big lag between now and when the tees will come out, but our initial production run will take about 120 days to get manufacturerd and delivered by sea. Once it arrives it has to clear customs, get separated, etc etc etc and then it gets delivered to our printers. We'll be making monthly orders, but the first order takes the longest.

I know we said that they'd be here in January of 2007, but sometimes things happen outside of your control. We've already placed a test order of about 39,000 shirts on 4 colors (Black, Lt. Blue, Silver & Cream) which our printers will use to make test prints and also to make the tees which will be available in our store. If anyone is REALLY curious about what the tees will be like, please feel free to drop by our office and we'll show you the production samples. They're amazing!

So, I think that just about covers it. We're so excited to get this going you have no idea. Thank you for your incredible patience and support in this. It'll be worth the wait, we promise!!!!!!!

-Jeffrey

And a tour of the facility would not prove a whole amount either. Those tours are easily staged to present a rosier view of working conditions and the happiness of the employees.

Is there any more reassurance that can be offered that your manufacturer is ethical and non-exploitative?

If anyone wants to read Disney's Code of Conduct for Manufacturers, it's here:

http://corporate.disney.go.com/corporate/conduct_manufacturers.html?English

It's pretty decent, and their outlined enforcement methods sound pretty comprehensive. I still retain a healthy amount of cynicism about how far this actually protects workers from exploitation, but this is more impressive than most global merchandising companies.

Is Threadless demanding similar labour standards and standards of working conditions, or are you just assuming this guy will treat workers the same at all his factories?

But come on,

"And I can absolutely imagine Disney using exploitative child labour to manufacture children's products - in fact, it seems pretty likely that they do"

That's cold hard facts, there. You can imagine it, well it must be fairly true, but hang on a sec it seems likely that that they do. Well, that's it settled.

I think facts need to come before your wild conjecture. And thus far threadless have provided more than you. It's been built recently and complies with American standards. Disney do have one of the most stringent policies on clothing manufacturer and the fact that you don't like the sound of it all is neither here nor there.

heh, well i'm pretty sure there isn't a separation like "over here we have the disney workers, and over here we have the children used to make everything else". this factory was made in 1996 to be a state-of-the-art facility that would provide jobs for the people in the area of Bangladesh that it was built. We have just as much concern about who makes our gear as Disney does.

Jesus. I wasn't trying to piss anyone off. It's not unnatural at all to assume that a large, global, multi-billion dollar company like Disney is capable of using exploitative labour. Loads of them do. Disney is, in fact, the exception. I looked up their Code of Conduct for Manufacturers, and I concede they they have mechanisms in place that try to ensure a good standard of ethical labour. Whether these actually work is another matter, but you couldn't really expect a global corporation to do much more, in this day and age.

I would say that the age of the factory is neither here nor there - exploitative child labour is rife in China, and many of the factories there are brand new. And the factory was made to provide jobs for the people in the area? How do you know that? And don't think it would be beyond some manufacturers to treat some workers well while exploiting others, which is why I asked whether Threadless will be introducing its own Code of Conduct. If the factory already abides by that used by Disney, it shouldn't be a big deal, but would assure that no loopholes were being exploited.

Look - I'm not accusing Threadless of being assholes here. I like the company and the products it produces, and it would be disappointing if they intentionally or unintentionally adopted unethical manufacturing practices. That's all.

Late to the party, but:

"Hong Kong-based Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM) found three factories that manufacture Disney products routinely violated Chinese labor standards. SACOM interviewed workers from the Huangxing light manufacturing, Qisheng candle factories in Shenzhen, and Jianlong toy factory in Zhuhai. Labor violations included the following:

* Hourly wages below the legal minimum of 4.02 to 4.12 yuan an hour. SACOM found that workers were only receiving an hourly wage of 2.19 to 3.41 yuan (or US$0.28 to US$0.43)
* Monthly overtime of 60 to 136 hours. Chinese law states the legal maximum is 36 hours of monthly overtime
* Denial of overtime pay
* Inadequate living conditions. The Jianlong factory housed 12 people per room, 15 rooms per floor, with one shower and one toilet per floor

According to SACOM spokesperson Vivien Yau Tze-wei, “Workers are offered 70 yuan as a reward by the factories if they help them cover up the truth when asked by auditors.” The report concluded that “these results show the incompetence of corporate monitoring of labor standards.” Last year, SACOM found similar worker’s rights abuses at four other Disney suppliers in China. Refer to the related alert item below for more information.

"According to the National Labor Committee, Disney maintains contractual relationships with sweatshops producing Disney gear and books. The factories allegedly employ child labor and regularly abuse International Labor Organization standards of conduct. In August of 2005, Scholars and Students Against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM), human rights and women’s movement leaders, and other activists convened in Hong Kong to confront Disney and ask for full disclosure of the factories that the company uses to source its products. Disney is also implicated in the NLC’s “Toys of Misery” report, along with Hasbro and Wal-Mart.

Something more local to where you guys are getting production, though this happened three years ago:

"Conditions for workers at Niagra Textiles Ltd. in Bangladesh are extremely harsh. Laborers work 14 hour days, seven days a week. They are routinely abused for not working fast enough and sometimes imprisoned for asking to be paid ontime. Other abuses and violations include:

* 19-hour all night shifts that are mandatory for workers once a weel
* Workers are paid just 5 cents for every Disney garment they sew
* Speaking while working is prohibited on pain of lost wages
* Workers to do not receive any health insurance or sick days
* Corporate monitoring is a farce; workers know they will be fired if they speak the truth about their working conditions

These are just a few of the abuses that workers who sew Disney garments in Bangaldesh face. Such shameful violations don't seem to mesh with the wholesome public image Disney tries to present.

This defeats the purpose of having a tag in the first place... plus if I got another design printed and my name was on the tag then I would not want to have it removed from the shirt. Currently with the tag info being printed onto the shirt, there is no chance of ever needing to worry about the name not being with the shirt because it is actually a physical part of the shirt. Well, I'm a little happier that the tags are sateen. They're easier to cut out without still having a scratchy bit.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 06 '07 at 12:38pm
bortwein, re-read the post... the fabric tag will just have Threadless' name, the size, and "100% cotton, made in Bangladesh". All the other cool stuff (including designer's name) will still be printed on the inside of the shirt, but will go at the lower-right side of the tee. And it doesn't matter what you "vote" because they're being forced to do this for legal reasons.
bortwein
   bortwein on Jun 06 '07 at 12:39pm
if everyone is thinking about cutting them out anyway then isn't that the biggest reason to stay with the printed tags anyway? ok I'm done with adding my 2˘, well it was probably a Buck 50 by now.
jpiatt
   jpiatt on Jun 06 '07 at 12:40pm
bortwein...
"We're still going to be using the printed designer/design information tag on the inside, but that will now be located at the lower right-side of the tee. In the neck, we'll have custom-made Threadless tags."

The tag will not be where the designer name and information will be at.
So yes, you can just cut out the tag if you don't like it. That's all they do with the FOTL and AA tags now anyway.
skaw
   skaw on Jun 06 '07 at 12:41pm
bortwein, the tag is just going to have the size, place of origin and washing instructions. all the designer info, design title and such will still be printed onto the inside of the shirt.
jpiatt
   jpiatt on Jun 06 '07 at 12:41pm
Not to sound like a dick, but I think you should maybe read before you start complaining.
skaw
   skaw on Jun 06 '07 at 12:44pm
the only other options are

1) for us to try to print the country of origin, washing instructions and size in the shirt before we import it. then printing the designer info again, separately. this is still something we are considering if it's possible in that factory and doesn't add too much cost.

2) to import them with a tag but just continue to cut them out like we do now. but i think that if we have to put a tag in it, we might as well make it nice and keep it rather than have a visibly cut out tag as part of our product.
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 06 '07 at 12:51pm
2) makes a lot of sense.

So, skaw, you say the cut's very different from the I Heart Threadless shirts... is it similar to the cut you currently use for the longsleeves?

It's different but not VERY different. Hard to compare with the longsleeves. The girl's version has a little larger neck hole, the fabric is a bit stretchier, the cut has more of a flare for the hips and the sleeves are a tad shorter. The guy's version is a nice cross between AA and FOTL's cuts but with some minor differences including way better fabric. It's overall about a half size smaller than the I Heart Threadless version.

Sounds awesome! Are they not any shorter, then? I find everything to be crazily long... though I guess short girls who wear high-waisted trousers aren't your main demographic. ;)

Also, oh, if you're making them smaller than the I Heart Threadless shirts (which according to the blogs were a lot smaller than AA) does that mean you're adding more sizes? Or will some people no longer be able to fit into Threadless?

The facility we're using is one of hundreds of facilities that Disney uses all over the world. Also, Bangladesh is a big place. I can only speak for the one place we're using, but it follows all the standards that we'd expect out of an overseas facility.

Also, in everything you posted the word "allegedly" comes up before anything that is bad. It's not proof. Not to downplay a problem, but it really has nothing to do with us - specifically because it's not the factory we're using.

I know it's not easy to find manufacturers here in the states, and I appreciate that you have some standards for who makes your material. I'm just tossing out some food for thought.

I'm in a similar situ -I bought a bunch of XLs because according to the size charts they should actually be too small for me (at least on the chest) but they turned out to fit reasonably/loosely on chest/hips and incredibly baggily around the waist... so then I got Ls and they're tighter on the chest/hips but still too loose around the waist... so now I'm considering getting an M to test, if I can find away to stop my boobs getting squished into oblivion...

what's cool is since we're putting the cool printed tag part on the inside of the bottom front of the tee it will be much easier to show somebody who designed the tee you're wearing.

Super cool!! Several times I've been asked who the artist was. When I'm with friends I can just tell them to evert the label area of the shirt, but I'm too shy to do that with passersby. And yes, I get asked about the artist more than the producer....I guess some people just assume that I'm wearing an artist-printed shirt.

Eeek! The existing shirts are bad enough, when the design's printed along the bottom of the shirt. As much as I love FrequenCity and Strange Birds, the visual effect is pretty much lost if I'm sitting down. Much of the design disappears into a rumpled mess, alas.

Nice! The sleeves look really great (I was afraid of teeny cap sleeves). And I agree about the neckline! It looks much more comfy now. Overall the new shirt looks like it's much softer and seems to lay pretty smoothly over the body.

Yay! I can now buy the new tees confidently knowing they'll still fit and in the same size I already wear. :)

Thank you thank you thank you!!

No way you guys'll make the girl shirt sleeves longer? It's one of the only things keeping me from buying the girl ones... I always buy the guy ones because guy shirts are always looser and more comfortable on me.

I agree with Vindemiatrix. I'm 5'0" so the shirts shouldn't be longer, but this shouldn't be a problem since more sizes will be offered (I hope I'm right in assuming the sizes with extend on BOTH ENDS). Hopefully, the length will be accordingly shorter on the smaller sizes.

I'm pretty pleased that the girly tees are not any shorter than the A.A. ones although I'd be much much happier if they were just an inch or two longer.

Petite/short girls need to keep in mind that they can just hem the shirt (or sleeve length) to be shorter to fit them. Average and tall girls cannot "magically" make the shirt get longer. :)
Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 07 '07 at 5:35pm
The new shirts look good, although I would have preferred the example not to be so dark - it's more difficult to see the way it sits without adjusting my monitor! Also, is it my imagination, or do the sleeves actually look longer?

rain_cloud, I have a feeling they will be - it would certainly make sense! Not that I could fit into a small, but never mind...

pyr4lis, we can't do it with a low-placement design. And you guys could just wear higher-waisted trousers. :P

I'm glad to hear the shirts will be closer to AA... I was worried about the I heart Threadless with the longer length. I'm very short (5'0) and some threadless shirts are randomly longer then others and they always look silly on me. I can't wait to try out the new tees.

And honestly, THANK YOU guys for providing photo examples. It's one thing to have a shirt described in words and quite another when you can actually see the differences for yourself. It makes a world of difference. THANK YOU again!

Vindemiatrix - You're really nice on the blogs so I don't want you to get mad at me but .... EWW! High waisted trousers? Definately a no-no unless you're like 50+. I honestly want you to know that I feel the problems of short girls because I'm tall and have the reverse problem. I'm just thinking that 95% of the prints don't touch the bottom hem of the shirt that you guys do have room to hem them up an inch. I've got threadless tees I can't wear to work cause they just barely cover my belly button.

Vindemiatrix
Vindemiatrix on Jun 08 '07 at 11:54am
Hehe, I'm not gonna get mad, but I will get equally vehement in response - high-waisted trousers are soooo much better than low-rise ones! Low-rise jeans seem to be designed for people shaped like tubes, so if it fits your legs then it's probably going to be too tight on your hips and make your excess fat squidge out like a pasty muffin-top! Ugh! I admit they can look okay on skinnier types, but they still make your legs look a lot shorter. Additionally, something with a waist-line below or at least low on the hips is just plain impractical, as it's past the point of having any kind of help staying up from your body's shape, whereas if it's higher-up then you can actually for example run for the bus without your trousers falling way down. I have some low-rise jeans I bought in a moment of insanity a couple of years ago (possibly because they were the only non-skinnies I could find, and generally aside from the waistline were very nice...) and I've worn them about twice. And the falling-down-while-running-for-the-bus thing happened. I nearly missed it because I had to keep pulling them up! And I was wearing a belt with them. I know you're supposed to wear reeeaaally tight belts with them to keep them up, but that just accentuates the muffin-top effect and makes them even more uncomfortable. Why do that to yourself when you could just wear something that stays up by itself and doesn't make you squish out? I am reallyreallyreally repulsed by muffin-tops. I only wore those jeans after losing quite a bit of weight because I was so grossed out by the idea of bulging out of them even a little bit.
Sooo in conclusion... unflattering to hips, make most people look fatter, make nearly everyone look shorter-legged, and fall down unless held up with tight belt. Noooooo. Awful awful things. And that is why I wear nice sensible trousers which either have high waists or at least come up pretty high on the hips. :)

Haha, wow, that was insanely long. The horribleness of modern jeans is one of my favourite rant topics. ;) Which is especially funny since I was mostly joking in my previous suggestion for y'all to wear higher trousers!

And don't worry about it, I do get what you're saying. It's a pity that clothes all need to conform to an average size and shape because there are a lot of people it just plain won't work for. But unless you can go to specialist shops (like the amazing Bravissimo - three sub-sizes within each main size!) and pay extra, or mod them yourself, then we're all stuck in the same boat and we've gotta be sympathetic to each other. :) Especially since otherwise we (as a gender/culture/whatever) tend to be jealous of each other or putting each other down or both... but that's another very very long ramble for another time, hehe. Anyway, I get your plight and you get mine. I probably will do some sewing on mine to make them a more flattering size/shape once my exams are over. As for your problem... if it's not too hot for summer, how about wearing a really thin vest-top underneath or something, to cover the area between top and trousers?

Sorry to everyone having to scroll past this massive comment!

I hope the new girly sizes accommodate fuller figure gals and are truer to size than the AA ones. I recently bought three shirts in XL thinking they'd fit. They just barely fit. After washing the shirts, I'm sure they won't fit at all. They were my first threadless purchase and I'm so disappointed. I can't exchange for guys' size shirts since the designs I have are sold out. I'd love to wear the shirts I have, but it'll be a waste of money. I'm bummed.

Thanks, Vindemiatrix. I do that for all my shirts, actually. AA's website says there's "minimal shrinkage" with this style of shirt, so that's not too comforting. *Any* shrinkage will make these shirts expensive rags.

I'm unfamiliar with AA's sizes and styles (I didn't know they ran small). Had I known, I would've ordered the men's styles. It's a real shame because I love the designs I have (Bobshopping, Para Poppins and Tools of the Trade). Oddly, my PP shirt is a cotton/polyester blend (so it isn't a Fine Jersey cotton shirt/cut).

It's just a disappointing way to be introduced to a new company.

Is it cheaper for Threadless to manufacture their own shirts, rather than purchase them from AA or FOTL?

If so, is Threadless considering lowering the price of their shirts? That would be amazing. I know that $15/17 isn't a LOT, but I wouldn't complain about cheaper prices. Or, at least, the girly tees could be the same price as the guy tees!! Hmm...

I agree with Vindemiatrix on the issue of low-rise jeans... to the extent that I don't buy them even if the design on them is great. Of course, being 5'0" I fit into size 14 (kids) pants and there are always some classic cuts available in children's sizes. But even classic cuts aren't necessarily high-waisted (the high-waisted from back-in-the-day is super ugly). I'm just a bit ashamed that at 20, I'm the size of a 14-year-old (that's actually when I stopped growing).

Oh, and I think helo's reference to Goldilocks is hilarious.

Hi all. I have been reading most of the comments and I have to stand up for 13Strong and say his concience did prove him right. I too am really trying to be ethically minded with my purchasing, as we, the customer have a lot of purchasing power.....the power to make a difference. All you have to do is type in DISNEY and SWEATSHOPS and walaa...plenty of websites that scrutinise the supposedly 'innocent' family friend. Im not saying that Threadless are involved in this and i dont want to take the accusation, but its just the supposed affiliation of the manufacturer, that sometimes works for Disney.

That American Apparel article is fascinating.

Yes, AA is faaar from perfect, and Dov Charney is obviously a sex-obsessed, childish, misogynistic freak, who believes that he can run his (rapidly expanding) company like his own school-yard gang - at some point, he's going to have to face up to the anti-discrimination and harrassment legislation that exists for a reason. But at the same time, if the company can keep improving its practices as it grows, as it has given most indication of doing, then I would much prefer AA's approach and situation to that of a sweatshop in some developing country.

Like I said, I'm not accusing Threadless of using sweatshop labour - I'm just responding to Siye's comment and link.

what's cool is since we're putting the cool printed tag part on the inside of the bottom front of the tee it will be much easier to show somebody who designed the tee you're wearing. whereas the way it works now you have to kinda weirdly pull your collar open so people can see.

I don't think this has been asked yet: What is going to happen with the lighter colored tees? Won't the printed tags show though the front of the shirt?

i guess i will just have to order a new threadless fit t shirt and see what happens as it's so hard to tell from photos.

I'm slightly apprehensive about as the description thus far has sounded not so flattering on my shape, or have the things which i like about the AA ones. Out of all the t shirts i own (threadless or otherwise) they are my favourite fit and i can wear them with nearly all the fit of jeans that i own, so im not restricted. The length is fine, the neck line is fine (wider = me fat looking) the sleeve length is fine (shorter sleeves = fat grandma arm), the fit on my stomach, chest is fine. The whole getting them across the atlantic and then finding out it doesnt fit is slightly worrying.

We can just see i guess. if i hate them, then i guess ill save myself some money but never buying a threadless shirt again :P

oh and low rise jeans for me - the only high rise pair i have are because i love the jeans so much but are too too far up and sit at my natural waist (the only place they will fit!!).

oh and i never put my shirts in the drier, threadless or otherwise.

I love how people type things in search engines and believe the results. The internet is the greatest tool for misinformation. A generation of people who believe in random links brought up by searching for what they want to find. If you type in "disney sweatshops" youre going to find people who claim they use them. Its that simple. Thats how free speech and the internet work.

Ste7en is right. Though I'm totally ignorant of the actual issue at hand, I think more care has to be taken in researching the internet. Making sure the sources are reputable is just as important as the research itself. Of course, judging reputability is not an easy task. A good rule of thumb is to trace the article to its source and evaluate the means by which the sourced research was conducted.

As with all currently-relevant history, current events, and controversial topics, more often than not we can find totally conflicting information based on either perpetuated misinterpretations, or the deliberate fabrication of misinformation, against the facts itself.
13strong
13strong on Jun 27 '07 at 7:38am
Right, I agree. But it works both ways - it's not enough to simply say "Disney use them" when there is indication, or suspicion, that Disney's practices are not always ethical. I'm not saying that we should believe all the articles that say they're not, but the fact that so many of these pieces and webpages exist suggests that it may not be a simple issue. Disney stands to gain more from propaganda and misreporting than those at the grass roots.

That's all I'm saying. That knowmore.org website seems pretty reputable. I will check out Disney on that.
asfi235
asfi235 on Jun 27 '07 at 7:42pm
Disney stands to gain more from propaganda and misreporting than those at the grass roots.

Yes, but....there are also people who automatically assume that corporations have to be a little bit evil (or at least look the other way when evil's being done on their behalf) in order to be successful. As noted on Snopes.com (the grand-daddy website of urban legend lore),

Businesses are the classic whipping-boys of urban legendry, and the bigger they are, the more they get whipped. Seems like they can't do anything right [...]"

On the other hand, I know from working for The Man that "Codes of Conduct" and "Compliance" are to some degree about plausible deniability and not necessarily statements about how the world actually is. It's a situation similar to e-commerce businesses who have their Privacy Policies, and yet occasionally someone makes a"mistake" and your personal information suddenly winds up in very sketchy hands.

(Don't mind me, I'm looking at both sides of the issue.)
Ste7en
   Ste7en on Jun 28 '07 at 8:37am
Its not that Disney stands to make more through misinformation, its that what they gain is more clearly defined. These groups stand to gain a lot, its just not always clear what they are after.

One example would be a group making a false accussation based on the simple idea that corporations cut corners, and then they turn out to be right, sudddenly they are all over the press, and they are the experts. They could stand to receive government funding and fame among other things. All from a lousy guess and a little luck. Thats just one example.

threadless, a question do you use the exact same company as disney? niagara textile?

• Workers routinely slapped and punched for not working fast enough;
• Forced to work 14 hours a day, seven days a week, with at most one day off a month;
• Mandatory 19-hour all-night shifts once a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. the following
morning, after which workers sleep on factory floor;
• Forced to work 35 to 42 hours of overtime a week. Workers at the factory up to 100 hours a
week. At most workers get four to five hours of sleep a night;
• Sewers paid just 11 to 20 cents an hour, as little as $5.28 a week;
• Helpers earn just seven to eight cents an hour, and $3.16 a week;
• Workers trapped in misery: four workers sharing one small hut exist on rice and must
borrow money to survive;
• Workers paid just five cents for each Disney garment they sew;
• Workers routinely paid two weeks late and are cheated of one-half of legal overtime pay;
• Women denied their legal maternity benefits;
• Speaking prohibited—if caught may be docked one day’s wages;
• No health insurance, no doctor in the plant, no sick days;
• No daycare center and no place to eat;
• Drinking water is filthy;
• If late three times docked one day’s wages;
• Docked two days’ wages if they talk back to supervisors or managers. Any attempt to
exercise their legal right to Freedom of Association would be met with beatings, mass firings
and blacklisting;
