Interview by Charles Festa
Hello there, and how are you doing today?
Fine and dandy, thanks for asking. :)
Chaos
How did you get your start in design?
I suppose it's cliché but I've always doodled and design was all I ever really wanted to do and drew superheroes on anything a pencil would rub off on.
I went through the usual channels of college and the obligatory crap first job or two before settling down to what's been quite a fun career so far. My work was always based quite heavily in layout because of the type of clients we picked up and the doodling sort of faded over time until I discovered threadless a few years ago. It inspired me to start drawing again and after a few really shit initial offerings, hopefully I'm on track to getting my drawing hand back.
Ninjas Should Wear Black
What inspires your work?
Lot's of things. I'm pretty sure I don't have a definite 'look' to my work, and to be honest I like it that way as it allows me to play around with ideas and work between graphic and illustrative styles. I think I'm like most people and have ideas at the most inappropriate times when I don't have access to anything to write them down with. Sometimes I remember them, and sometimes not.
Progress Marches On
How does it feel to have a design selected by Threadless?
It's great. Threadless is the pinnacle of shirt design so to be chosen by you is pretty awesome.
Snip
What do you plan to spend your hard-earned cash on?
I'm buying a new imac and ramping it up a little to do more work at home rather than squeezing it into lunch hours!
What is your favorite:
Cheese? Mozzarella.
Book? I like sports biographies. I've just finished Ricky Hatton's and he's the funniest, most down-to-earth boxer on the planet. I'm gutted he didn't floor Mayweather...
Movie? Probably 'The Quiet Man' with John Wayne. It was one of those films I'd watch when I was a nipper with my Dad and we'd bond a little to.
Song? I couldn't possibly think of just one.
Word? Stooshie. It means a fight or argument in Scotland.
Curse word? Spunkbubble. Although Fuck is my bread and butter word.
Color? Black.
Television show? Right now I like Heroes and Dexter.
Super hero? That's a toughie, probably Flash or Green Lantern though.
Drink? Lager.
Farm Animal Sound? Moo.
Threadless shirt? Another toughie, but I've worn the hell out of Eskimokiss' 'JC was a Streaker'.
Sport? Football (soccer).
James Bond? Sean Connery obviously, no one else comes close.
Smell? Fillet Steak, cooked medium.
Website? Probably ffffound.com
Right or Left handed? Left, I've been told all the best people are.
Political? I try to avoid it.
Wine Cooler? No need, I'm a beer drinker all the way.
