A chat with Ryan Alamillo

Your style is very delicate and kind of goes against the grain of what's popular right now (really bright, simple and eighties style). Even your eighties-era themed designs are muted and understated. Has it always been this way for you? What draws you to that particular look?

Hmm...You might be on to something. A lot of my art isn't that bright. I really don't have an explanation for it other than I create what I like, and I guess this means I like a more subtle palette. But! I have been making inroads lately. I have been deliberately pushing myself to create artwork that I wouldn't ordinarily do, and I have to say, I like what I see.

That's good to hear. Too many of us get stuck in a pattern and get lazy... Like me!

If you had to live in another era besides this one, which would it be? (Obviously not the eighties...)

Ok, growing up, I thought it would be cool to go way back to like the renaissance or something. But now as an adult, I have given it a little more thought, and now I conclude it would be a horrific idea.

Firstoff, I would be zapped there and probably freak the hell out of everybody with my 21st century garb, lingo, etc. Note: Like Martin Lawrence in "Black Knight"? I am almost positive that I would be burned at the stake for witchcraft or something (especially since I magically appeared out of nowhere). And, in the off chance they don't kill me, then I would have to live with their standards of food, no car (wtf), and I would probably end up getting the plague.

So I guess my next choice would be sometime in the distant future. I am sure I would be both awed and saddened by what will happen to this planet.

I see you've put a lot of thought into this. Good... Always be prepared...

What's your favorite blog of all time on Threadless?

There's this blog (critique blog) which is a tee with a floating Michael Jordan head. Just reading the reactions of people to this has given me all the joy I will ever need.

EXM! That's a good one.

Do you think being on Threadless has helped you evolve as an artist?

I think the value that Threadless brings (besides supporting artists all over the world) is the community connections that it provides. There is the active networking that is obviously beneficial, but also it is a showcase of so many different art styles that everybody brings to the table. I am constantly being blown away by some of the stuff people do. I really do believe that being surrounded by great art does make one want to do better and learn more.

Wow that question sounded so...art snob, sorry. Let me switch gears. You're from LA right? Did you know that LA's full name is El Pueblo de Nuestra Seņora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula? What the heck?

Yeah, I knew it was a really long meandering name that started with "El Pueblo" and then actually had "Los Angeles" somewhere in paragraph 3 of the name, but I definitely don't have it memorized. I think people just got lazy, I mean come on, it's now "LA". Can't get much shorter than that.
