Interview by Charlie Festa
Hello there, and how are you doing today?
Doing well thanks.
El Toro
How did you get your start in design?
I've been drawing all my life but never really took it too seriously, although it was probably one of the only things that came naturally to me... that and procrastination. When I got to college I decided against obtaining a practical degree and majored in Painting. After graduating, it was pretty obvious that I couldn't make a living as a painter (ha), so I took a bunch of graphic design courses at a local community college. Graphic design and commercial illustration was a means to making a living while still being "creative". I had terrible luck as a freelancer, it took a long time and many bad turns, but I'm finally at a point where I'm going in the right direction with my work... I think.
Foundation
What inspires your work?
Nature, surfing, music, people and the stupid things they do as well as the beautiful things they do.
You Shall Suffer
How does it feel to win on Threadless?
It's always great to get an email from you guys. I was so chuffed with this recent win that I took the design department at my current job out to lunch, granted it was just Rubios, but it's the thought that counts.
I Dreamt of you yesterday
What do you plan to spend your winnings on?
Nothing fancy, mainly pay off bills but I'll definitely splurge a
little and get a new surfboard or something. The Jet Blue coupon that was included with the winnings definitely gives me some incentive to travel. I will hopefully go to New York or San Fran for a weekend with my wife in the near future. That's one thing that I want to do more of, travel and see the many cultures throughout the world.
