Interview by Rachel Gottesman
How does it feel to be the ultimate cage fighting champion, AKA the chosen designer for Threadless Loves Revolution?
It feels really good, especially considering this is my first print. I was very surprised at how well it was received.
From what crazy Escher-like dream did "Squeegee Clean" emerge?
It actually came from a school project I had been working on at the time. Some of the Black Rock crew told me to submit it, so I owe them one.
On the other hand, they owe me a ton of prizes!
Do you think Threadless has helped your artistic career significantly? How about the Black Rock?
Threadless has definitely inspired me, and Skinnycorp provided another service that really got me started in illustration.
As for the Black Rock, I've got nothing but love. All fantastic people chock full of talent, and they're always helpful.
So you're in galleries (I was recently at a show you were featured in... I hope you remember since you were there) and all over the internet now, meaning you're totally famous! What's that feel like?
Of course I remember! It's a lot of fun to be around active artists, and like minded people. I think experiencing art first hand is one of the best ways to improve your own work.
You've been to Threadless home base a few times, including for your show and the mishmash, I think. What was your favorite part about being here in Chicago?
Great people, active environment, and free t shirts!
Yes... It's always the free t shirts!
Do you have any special talent (besides drawing)?
Sometimes I can do a handstand. Does that count?
It counts a little.
Let's finish this business with you giving us your favorite (easy) recipe that everyone on the internet should write down on a little 3x5 index card and the make at home.
"Grandma's Silly Quick Cobbler"
Blend together and place in greased baking dish: 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 2 tsp baking powder, 2 tbsp butter.
Next you'll need: 2 cups fruit, cold water, 1 cup sugar, 2 tbsp butter.
Drain fruit and retain juices, add enough cold water to make 1 cup.
Place drained fruit in batter, sprinkle the cup of sugar over the fruit, and pour the cup of juice on top.
Cut butter in cubes and sprinkle on top
Bake @ 375 for 30 min.
