Interview by Rachel Gottesman
Hey, thanks for letting me interview you! Congrats on being printed again.
Hey, thanks for allowing me to....be interviewed!
So where have you been lately? We haven't seen you around Threadless in quite some time.
Well for about 3 years I had a cushy salary job which took up most of my time, but I recently ditched that glamorous lifestyle for a much more volatile freelance career, which rewards me with more free time, so I can do things like submit to Threadless!
The cushy job was doing concept art for a couple different video game studios. Sounds awesome right?! WRONG! Every day was like Frodo's journey through Mordor, only with Air Conditioning, and Youtube.
Why'd you quit, other than your job making you miserable?
Well aside from the obvious perils of working for "the man", I really wanted the chance to do my own thing, and having a full time job creating someone elses vision turned out to be quite the bummer.
So that means submitting to Threadless makes you happy? Well that just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
Hey now, don't jump to conclusions!
...
Ok, yes it does.
The one thing Threadless has always provided, was an outlet for me to do whatever I wanted, and sometimes, get paid handsomely for it.
Yep, that's what we're here for!
Speaking of being handsomely rewarded... You knew this was coming, but I have to ask... What's up with Coco?
Oh snap! Yeah that was kind of a big moment in my life.
The "I'm with Coco" portrait just started as a fun piece to show my support, and within 12 hours it had gone completely viral, penetrating every social networking site. Before the end of the day I was getting e-mails and calls from The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, TMZ, etc. it was ridiculous. I was able to harness all this energy into a Facebook fan page, where we able to have rallies across the country.
Since then, I was lucky enough to meet Conan and all of his crew on more then one occassion, and I still keep in touch with them. Obviously meeting Conan was a dream come true.
It's also been great for my career! It took me up a couple notches, and has allowed me to get some higher profile jobs, and at the same time turn away some of the lower profile jobs that I would have only done for the money.
So what you're saying is, now you're rich and famous.
Basically. I bought two Lambo's just in case I wreck one of them. I also bought a lot of fancy cheese, which turned out to be a horribly delicious idea.
How much is a lot? Do you have a swimming pool filled with gouda?
Well that's just ridiculous, everyone knows I dont have a pool!
Well I think you're ridiculous for not having a pool. Where else would you put 2,000 lbs of cheese?
In one of the Lambos......
That's sick.You're sick!
Moving on from cheese now... What's exciting that's coming up for you?
A lot of stuff I can't talk about! Exciting right?!
Not for all of your adoring fans!
I have adoring fans?! Someone point them out to me!
If I could point to everyone reading this interview, I would, but I'm stuck behind my desk here at Threadless.
If you can dream it, you can achieve it!
Hey man, I didn't ask for any advice.
It's too late, I'm turning this interview around! How do you like your job at Threadless?!
As long as I have nut jobs like you to interview, I love it. This interview is over!
Awwhh!
