Interview by Rachel Gottesman
Hi Lizz, welcome to the alumni club! What does the extra "z" in Lizz stand for? It has to be something rad.
I like the letter Z. I always think it looks weird spelled with just one, it really needs two to look right. But if it has to stand for something then Zombies. Or Zoetrope. Or Zoomania. Those are 3 good words beginning with Z.
Weirdly enough, I had a friend in elementary school named Liz who was really into dinosaurs. I noticed that you enjoy drawing them. What's so alluring about our extinct lizard friends? Do you have a favorite dinosaur? (Parasauralophus is number one in my book.)
Dinosaurs are good. My favourite is Tyrannosaurus Rex but I also like Velociraptor and Diplodocus. I collect plastic dinosaurs, my best one has a red knitted dress. And I have another one called Pete.
Your work reminds me of Natalee Dee and Exploding Dog, except less... stick figure-y. I'm sure you get that a lot. Are you fans of them, or are they fans of you? Or are you completely insulted that I'd compare you to them and enjoy something more classical? What's your artistic flavor?
I’ve not heard of them, but I’ll check them out! I like Jeffrey Brown, Acme Novelty Library, Ghost World and David Shrigley to name a few. My artistic flavor is orange.
Now that you're a Threadless superstar, what are you going to do with that fame? Something good, or something evil?
I’m going to build a sanctuary for homeless cats, train the cats to sing and dance to a collection of musical classics- a few David Bowie numbers, perhaps a bit of ABBA and the Bee Gees. And then when the harmonies are just right I’ll go touring with them around the world. Whether that is good or evil is a matter of personal opinion.
Tell me all about your online comic "Comic Sushi". (Mmm, sushi!) How did all that come about?
Well, it’s an online comic- small easy to digest bite-sized comics of all different varieties, like sushi. People can pop in for a quick comic fix or order a “take-away” from my online shop.
Is there anything else you'd like to add? Care to thank all the little people who made this Threadless print possible?
I hope by little people you mean elves. If so, thank you elves.
Thanks for chatting! I'm going to get sushi.
Me too. Mmm sushi.
