Interview by Rachel Gottesman
Greetings from Threadless! Congratulations on having your artwork printed for everyone to wear!
Thank you so much ! That was a delightful surprise. This drawing seemed so absurd to me. I'm glad that your Threadless team found some kind of sense in my delusion.
Yeah, well... We're all weird here. That kind of thing is right up our alley.
What do you think is the best and most useful part of Threadless for up and coming designers?
The big Threadless community, the diversity of styles and above all those "very American" opinions and tastes which are totally different from what you'll find in Europe.
Note: Americans. We're strange and like hot dogs.
It's a good way to call yourself into question, to promote your personal development and to pay attention to what is enjoyed in a drawing or not.
Any special plans for your design earnings? Going skydiving any time soon?
I live in France. So most of my earnings will pay tax, and probably a bottle of champagne. I'll drink to Threadless!
How long have you been in the design business? Has it changed much since you began? What's the most important piece of advice you can give to designers?
I've been working as a designer for ten years, eight of them as a freelance designer.
Changes ? There's a return to freehand drawing, people want to see lines coming directly from an artist's hand.
And advice ? Don't follow the latest style so that you can stay yourself. And don't get too far away from it so that you can eat each day of the month...
Your portfolio is pretty broad. It covers design, illustration and even industrial design. Which is your favorite and why?
Thank you! I don't have any favorite. I simply love to shape new ideas. And I like it when my own drawings surprise myself and when they make me think : "what did I want to say anyway?"
What's your favorite band that everyone should listen to?
I listen to Royskopp, Unkle and Bashung (that's our french Bob Dylan).
Unkle. Good stuff!
So...If you were in a life or death situation that involved you being forced to eat an entire pie, what kind would it be? (PS: Pie is awesome.)
What life or death situation could force me to eat an entire pie ? If you know one, let me know!
