A chat with Gianbattista Bonavita

Interview by Charlie Festa

Hello there, and how are you doing today?

Well, what can i say (in my classic so-so english): I am really smooth, and cool. Just good vibrations are running through my veins and my neurons, as i keep enjoying this FIRST print on Threadless. Of course, for you, now, it's perhaps becoming usual and not so important, but believe me, a First Print on Threadless is something special, especially because i have a lot of humility, modesty. Example? Yeah, right now, i look at my gallery on Threadless and could think for a few seconds: is that mine? Naahhhhh, i couldn't do that! So? I am for a few moments the happiest man of the universe lol

How did you get your start in design?

Well, i guess i was born with a pencil in my hands :-) Seriously, i always had this obsession, this need to draw, since i was a little kid. SO, my start is difficult to answer, in terms of passion. You know what? when i go to my grandparents, i'm still a little astonished for example by a little painting on a wall, illustrating a pink flamingo, i did when i was 5-6 years old...it's a bit like that : "wow! i did that? nahh...but how did i do that?" i never quit this passion then. My first graphic experience with a computer? (lol it's a "bit" sexual, isn't it?). It was more or less in 1987-1988, on my first computer: an IBM CGA PC-Compatible called Amstrad PC1512 (english origin i guess) with an included soft called GEMpaint, with 16 colors available just for the soft...you imagine that? it was a paradise at the time lol Anyway, today, submissions on Threadless are limited at 5, so i'm not lost :-)

What inspires your work?

Tough question!!! My feelings, my emotions drive me most of the time...it's the same with drawings ;-) But, when i see, discover other works, of artists, whoever they are, gifted or not, pro or not, just looking at the stuff they created...it's a boost, a big one! No matter what you do, just
do it! Inspiration is a delicate thing i guess, sometimes, you just look around you for a few seconds, and you find something interesting, wherever you are...

How does it feel to have a design selected by Threadless?

eheheh, too late, i already answered intentionnally :-) but i can add something: i want more !!!!

What do you plan to spend your hard-earned cash on?

why not offering a good trip to my lover, to let her forgive all those hours spent on my computer...i have the feeling she is becoming jealous, i touch my computer too much these days ahah :-)
