This is funny and super well thought out! I'm curious to see what the bubble would look like if the were outlines instead of a solid blue. That might make the emphasize be on the tiger icons more. I hope that helps!
I have a shirt up for critique too (and one for voting) - here's the critique! http://www.threadless.com/critique/94262/Whoopie |

funny idea, nice design! :) to me the cats look slightly tiger-y because of the black lines on the faces though. but that might just be me :P

Awesome! I think either "quack" or "cluck" has some pretty hilarious other language translations.
|
|
Ars Fera on Sep 03 '11
Thanks for all your comments!
Alexs83 - I can kind of see the tiger-like deal you're talking about, but unfortunately I can't really change it. I think a cat consisting of only the light and medium blue would look plan and kind of be lost in the rest of the design. Electric Sketch - Adding an outline of a dark blue to the speech bubbles make them look really awkward.. almost too bold. If more people would like to see the bubbles with an outline, I'll go ahead and make a version with an outline and different color combos! |
|
cragheads on Sep 04 '11
Nice design. At first I thought they were tigers, but people will get it. Tigers don't meow.
I can figure out all of the languages except the bottom middle one. Where is that cat from? |

One idea for the outline of the bubbles: Invert them so the text is the current blue of the bubble and then add an outline of the same blue color. I think that'd look neat.

|
tezebe on Sep 04 '11
Come to think about it, there is something that could be changed. The order of the cats. You should start with the more neutral versions, like English, French, Italian... and so on, leaving the Egyptian one last. Putting it first is bad idea as it kinda spoils the whole thing. Hope I helped :)
|
|
Ars Fera on Sep 04 '11
Thank you!
Cragheads and Alexs83 - You're right Alex! It's a little German cat! I was worried about that one.. I wasn't sure if people would recognize the little lederhosen hat.. If anyone has ANY ideas of another language to replace that one with let me know! Or if someone has a more easily recognizable German element to add that would be great! Richard.h - Alright, I will make a new version with one row with the speech bubbles as it is, one with what you suggest, and another row either unchanged or changed depending on if someone has another suggestion. Tezebe - I was wondering if someone would eventually bring that up! Alright, I will switch Egypt and English's positions and see how everyone like's it! |
|
richard.h on Sep 04 '11
One more tiny thing: You're mixing capital and normal letters on the Russian one. Either мяу or МЯУ.

|
Ars Fera on Sep 04 '11
Thanks Richard.h! I have much Russian to learn..
Changes that will occur in next version: -speech bubble outline and different color combos -English will be moved to where Egypt is, but because Egypt's headdress will most likely interfere with China's hat, China will have to be moved as well. -I will fix Russian cat's speech to all lower case |

Changes from V1:
-Some cats were switched around -Different speech bubble color combos/designs are displayed, choose your favorite! Row 1 was request, Row 2 was the original, and Row 3 is a few combos I could think of just to see if anyone liked one of them in particular. -Russian cat's speech was changed a little **I still need help with German cat, the one with the hat with the feather in it. Some people don't know it's German and I can see why, so if you have more German elements I could add, or you have an idea of a whole other language all together, let me know! And as always, if you leave a comment and a link to your design/critique, I'll take a look! |
|
Andromache22 on Sep 04 '11
The Egyptian one is my favorite. very cute.
|
|
richard.h on Sep 04 '11
Let's see now... Bottom left is my favorite bubble style, but it could also be the font. I think that what I suggested works on the middle one of row 1, not so much on the other two.
German cat is tricky. All I can think of is Oktoberfest, but a beer pitcher on his head would ruin it. I googled for images of "oktoberfest hat" and the Bavarian ones are actually a bit different from the sailor style that you are going for. Maybe they are more iconic for Germany. When you have settled on a bubble design, you should definitely adjust the font sizes so that the different texts leave the same amount of blank space in the bubble. (comparing top left and bottom right for example) |

Richard.h - Thanks for being so helpful throughout all of this :)
Next version I'll try a few more that way. To mix the bubble styles and the fonts some more, I'll do columns next time. I'll do a column of original, a column of your suggestion, and a column of the same style of the bottom left one. |

So I switched up the bubbles again to see how different bubbles looked with different color combos, because it's starting to show that the different fonts work better with different bubbles, but in the end I'll need to pick the combo that works the best.
I'll start adjusting the font sizes so they fit in the bubbles better and are more even after this color dilemma is resolved! If you leave a comment and a link to your critique/design, I'll check it out! |

I really need these bubbles to be decided on, it's killing me!! |
|
KendrahWithAnH on Sep 05 '11
I really prefer the outlined bubbles to the others. i think it makes the lettering pop more!
|
|
Andromache22 on Sep 05 '11
do you have to choose? What if you mixed up the different types of bubbles to balance the weight of different hats. I don't know if that makes sense. If not, I agree that the outlined bubbles make the text pop more. Hope that helps :)
|
|
andenes.magnus on Sep 05 '11
Awesome design. I personally don't like cats, but this is flaweless.
I think the bubbles on the left (blue shade with blank letters) work a lot better. |
|
Bella_Diablo on Sep 05 '11
Hey there,
Thanks for your help with my submission - I love your concept and idea! I would only suggest keeping the bubbles uniform, instead of having different styles (I agree with the person above, the bubbles on the left work the best for me) and would move the bubbles down so they are a little bit lower? Only move by a couple of mm, so there is the same amount of space between the kitties and each speech bubble. Great work though, well done! X |
|
fizzyegg on Sep 05 '11
the left bubbles! (but it's hard for me to imagine what the middle row would look like in that style). I would totally buy this if it got printed.
|
|
fizzyegg on Sep 05 '11
OH, I just saw V1.....Gosh it's pretty hard to decide I agree! I'm leaning towards a mixture of the different bubbles, but not placed in rows like above....maybe evenly spaced in a pattern but also taking into account the weights of the different hats and the text to which bubbles goes with what cat. Good luck!

Bummer, blank message! I think it was too long..
Short and sweet summary: Andromache22 - thanks for your input! I'm not sure how to balance the hats with the text though, I will need help with that Bella Diablo - Moving the bubbles down will cause overlap :/ France's bubble into Egypt and English's bubble into Germany. Fizzyegg - Since mixing bubbles has been brought up twice meow, I will probably make another version with a patter of some sort, but I will still need help "balancing" the hats with the right texts. Thanks everyone!! |
|
alexs83 on Sep 05 '11
thanks for your help on my design!
i prefer the blue colored bubbles on the left with the cut-out text, for me it kind of makes the text pop more. the text in the middle is too dark in my opinion...and i just dont like the outline bubbles :D i guess its also a matter of personal taste.. :) |
|
ainstushar on Sep 05 '11
Thanks for putting up a comment on my design. I like the artwork, it's awesome. Only thing to be careful is the background - it's too dark. Make it really light so it pops the cats and the hats. As of right now, it's kind of hard to see the main artwork. Once you do that, I think it's OK to submit it. You should also make a new design with just the Egyptian cat in the middle, make it big, and add a little grunge effect and people will buy it too.
|
|
Ars Fera on Sep 05 '11
Thanks for your comments :)
Aintushar - The background will be the color of the tshirt, which is the lightest blue Threadless shirts come in, so I can't really change that, seeing as the theme of the shirt is a monochromatic blue deal. |

Hate cats, but I love this design :) My vote is for the bubbles on version 4. If I have one nitpick it is to adjust the text on the italian one (lower left) Just squeeze it together a tad so you can't see the ending of each cursive letter. but that's literally the only thing I can think of!
|
|
Ars Fera on Sep 05 '11
Me And The Devil - Thanks! I'll try that out in the next version. I'm not sure how the design will look without any bubbles.. but I could try it in the next version as well.

Very nice. Great job on getting the colors right. The only one that bothers me is the Russian one... maybe make the hat taller or put some stars on it. It just seems like the others have 2 or more subtle details, and the hat needs just one more oompf to push it through.
Thanks for your help on mine. |

I think I like the colored in bubbles with the black text from v.3 best. But I'm not so sure about that either. I love the design, but I'm afraid that the bubbles will look a bit cliparty. What if there were no bubbles and just a curved line to suggest speech.

nice! Maybe offer it on a different tee color as well? Like a tabby-cat-orange or multi-colored tortoise-shell-cat-white.
|
|
Ars Fera on Sep 07 '11
Emmerdales - I'm a little nervous about deleting the bubbles.. but several people have suggested it so maybe I should atleast try!
KeepingYouAwake - Thanks! I'm kind of a noob so I'm not totally sure what vector work is, but this was all hand drawn on a tablet (except for most of the text) EricDiaz - I was waiting for someone to suggest that :) I'll try it, but monochromatic seems to work the best in my opinion, so maybe I'll try different color schemes. Fun Fact! If I made the cats tortoise shell colored they would all be girls! Tortoise shell and calico cats are all female :) Unless a male has some disease I forget the name of, then he will be tortoise/calico as well. And seeing as some of these cats have beards, I'm not sure they should be girls! Placement coming up! |

Here's placement!
So I was wondering if I should switch France and Mexico (Spanish) because the sombrero limits how far the design can move to the right. Any opinions on the bubbles are welcome, look through earlier versions to see different styles! I've been getting a few suggestions to remove them completely, so I may try that next version to see how everyone likes it. Leave a comment and a link to your design/critique and I'll check it out! |
|
me and the devil on Sep 07 '11
I'd make it smaller. I found those flat photo templates confusing. You have to bear in mind that the left and right sides are bent inwards when someone wears it, so half of the outer cats' faces will vanish. Also those template seem a bit too long to me. Try it on one of the models.
Your right though with switching france and mexico. |
|
Ars Fera on Sep 07 '11
Placement is more of a reference, like "I would like my design to look like this please", so they wouldn't be that literal and print it so close to the edge that it would curl around your sides.
But you are right that the template is a little long. I'll try a different one. France and Mexico shall be switched! |
|
alexs83 on Sep 07 '11
i would switch france and mexico as well and make it smaller :D
please score my submission: http://www.threadless.com/submission/368017/Penguin_in_Space |
|
emmerdales on Sep 07 '11
I'm not so sure if you should switch france and mexico. I think it might make it look too symmetrical and dry with all the big hats down the center. I mean, you're going to have to move the design in more/smaller to accommodate for the sides of the wearer, so it would be okay if the end of the hat went around the side a little. If that makes sense.
Maybe try moving a couple of the others around too. The english and french cats both have those small black hats, so it might be good to switch em up with some of the bottom cats. So close to submission ready! Thanks for commenting on mine. I have a new version up. |
|

Fantastic! Really going places.
A bit smaller methinks. Maybe just remove the bubble but keep the text. Or make the bubble outline thinner. Please let me know when you submit and vote here on what you have contributed to: Lights Out, Light Up |
|
Ars Fera on Sep 07 '11
I switched France and Mexico just to see how it would look, it throws it off a little, but if you hadn't been looking for it you wouldn't really notice/care. But since everyone's telling me to make it a little smaller, then it won't matter, so I shall keep France and Mexico as they are. Richard.h - I don't think I will get rid of the bubbles completely because I tried it and it looks very awkward without them, but maybe I will try to make them thinner!
Thanks everyone :) |

Ars, I would be careful about the design touching the border of the t-shirt. Make your design smaller and add some breathing room, otherwise it will end up looking like abstract art. Maybe threadless will re-scale it when they print it so it may not be in your control to do that.
Also, balance wise, the middle column looks like its a bit to the left, so maybe wanna center that? Maybe the cats are in the center, but the big hats are making it look that way. Check out my new version of my design: Dark Side of the Glasses |

Thanks guys :) I'm personally a big fan of tee templates without models because it's neutral, you'd be amazed how psychologically people are affected by certain things, like depending on how your face is constructed, people will trust you more or less at first glance. On the off chance that I might choose a subconsciously unfavorable model, I would like to stick with just a tee shirt. (I know I sound crazy :P but darn it that's who I am!) I do plan on spicing up the background, I just didn't want to put effort into final touches just yet.
So placement is good then? |

Hahaha, no on, I understand the whole psychological thing, I've taken some psychology before, it actually turns out that cheekbone structure actually factors into how trustworthy and likable a person appears when you look at their face. Is there a good tutorial for doing that cool flash thing? I am a photoshop junk and flash is just not my thing XD anyway, look forward to seeing this design up for voting, I think the bold text for the topcat cat makes it seem kind of like he is saying a 'gentlemanly' meow at a girl. Maybe I am just crazy but I think it makes it pretty funny, I like the text though.

Gogoalexgo - The reason I chose impact is because of lolcats :P impact is the standard font for them and I figured it would kind of be classic-like.
Kennifan - I got my flash template from a user called Manos, it's great, but I haven't been designing for a while and haven't used it for a long time, but if I remember correctly, it's pretty straight forward, he's left little directions in the template so you know what to do. You will need Adobe Flash for it, it can't be made in PS. Also I think the fps needs to be 60 in order to submit! Alex83 - I did because it would really leave the right side with very light hats, so I feel it would throw it off a lot :s And I already scored your design! You crazy Aintushar - very wise words :) thanks! |

I assume you used live paint to re-paint it quickly :) Why can't you use the same t-shirt used by the model in version 1 of my Dark Side of the Glasses? Do you have to use the same color scheme as the cats? If I had to choose between V7 and V8, then I would choose V8. Hopefully this gets published and you can make some money too :)

Yellow is my favorite color, so I am very biased, I love the yellow version~ Plus I think it is easier to see on yellow.

I asked all my friends in my dorm and every single one of them agreed that the yellow was better, so due to the overwhelming unanimity, the design will now continue on in yellow!
The next version will be the flash template! |

Oh and @Aintushar, I actually just used the color overlay effect in my Photoshop, it probably took around 15 minutes, but I actually went through to every individual layer and changed the color!

So it looks like I can lengthen it a little, I guess my original pictures must be a little short.
Is presentation alright? I can change the background on either one easily if need be. And feel free to leave links to your critiques/designs! |

Should I provide a link to a high res picture of the design when I submit it?

Nice. You used photoshop for this? It looks very vectorish - live paint would have been like 2 clicks to re-paint the whole thing. With the white t-shirt, the cats look much better.
Submit it Katie! |

I love this idea !

Great! I this could work as a belt print too, I'll bet. Love the last cat with his little beard ;)

This color change from blue really work wonders!
In the placement pic I have a feeling that the design sits a bit to the left. Intention or illusion? And the part of the Mexican hat that pokes up, maybe scale it up 10-15 percent. A sure five already! |
