Hi, this is a spoof take on Andy Warhol's banana print used as the cover for the Velvet Underground & Nico album. It's now done by "Mandy Warhall" for the band named "The Silk Subway & Nikka. The changes to the Banana include a direction reversal (it now points up) and a pink condom

I don't know the reference, but this looks Warholy enough :)
Nice work on the glare (on the condom), and I love that the shirt is purple!

the reference is just to the fact that the Velvet Underground used the banana as an album cover. Glad you like it - does that mean you think it's ok?

Honestly, I think the design would look much better without the text, just the image of the banana with the condom.

Maybe drop me a critique here or here?

I don't get the connection with the condom on the banana, though. If it's just silly, then rock on, but if you're trying to say something else with it, I'm afraid I'm missing it. :( In general, I like the idea of appropriating Warhol work since he was all about pop culture appropriation.

@ emivers - there's no public service announcement here :) I thought it would be funny to have Warhol's Banana in the context of a sex-ed class and put a condom on it - pure silliness!

@ Lyysander - I thought about dropping the text but it becomes quite empty - I'm not entirely convinced on that and I'm still working on different fonts....

I created a font that mimics the original from the Velvet underground - rotated the banana and swayed the placement of the signature and the band name - any thoughts?

I prefer the newer font but not sure about the the banana

seems like i've seen this done before. i could be wrong but you may want to research or at least ask around.

I like it. But I'd add less bruising to the banana.

@ cy-co Warhol themes are quite popular and I'm by no means the most original person, however, if someone did submit a Warhol banana with a pink condom on it for a spoof rock band album cover - I still reckon mine will look different enough :) and I reckon someone will bring it to my attention

@ OHea - less bruising - yeah, I did minimalise bruising from the original but I can do less.... thanks for the feedback

by the way - any thought as to which way the banana should point?

"the velvet" font is ok, but the "warhol" needs to be adjust to the original.

about banana point.. it should be raising isn't it? like graphs of "natural exponential" to explain it better and according to condom stuff

OK, so... I repositioned the banana as it was in V1 and I must say I prefer it this way. Having the 'velvet' in it's original position is how I envisioned this originally - Maybe that's all I really had to do! Also worked on the "Mandy Worhal" font to make it look closer to Andy Warhol's signature. So I think this is sorted... Looking to submit before the weekend, so any thoughts before this happens?

Hmm...I don't know, but I might change the font on the Mandy Warhol signature so it looks less like a generic font...maybe scan in a hand-done signature? I know you already submitted, but just in case.

back to the drawing board? - no sooner than I pushed it was it rejected - I really don't think this theme is that racy but if They deem it to be it would be nice to know so I can stop wasting my time and theirs with it. So... I got the standard email - leaving this one here until more is known.

Maybe because it's too close to the Velvet Underground original, and also the type is not too flattering, but I guess it's pretty close to the original font. (note: some fonts can't be used because they are copyrighted). I get that it's sort of a joke, but I honestly can't see wearing a condom-covered banana, except maybe at a health fair advocating safe sex, but never out in public.

it is a pain when you submit something then it gets rejected so fast. That happened to me with my first design. They told me it was because of the "pop culture" reference yet a good percent of designs made are based on current and past pop culture themes. Actually my current W.I.P. has a pop culture reference. If you have some suggestions I'd like to hear them.

I'm guessing that your design was rejected because it is very similar to the original Andy Warhol.

i would like it more on a cleaner banana, the idea is really cool, if you have time check this one out, but if not dont swet it.
