Any suggestions if I do decide to add a background?

Make it something that contrasts with the charaters

I've tried to use the tee colour as the contrast, hence the purple. Maybe I should change the tee colours then!

Anyone else got any constructive comments? I'm unsure if it needs changing or not.

I'm not sure the bead of sweat does much for the fire ball that is getting kicked. Maybe you could also try using some shading. Plus you've only used three colours, you could give the attacker black eyeballs and little more colour and maybe a mencing grin.
