yeah the folks in this forum seem pretty self-serving for the most part.



i'm working today so i won't be able to to post a lot, but here's what I think...



1. bigger shadow behind the monsters butt.

2. no yellow on the kids pajamas

3. the background looks strange...i think you may need to design a cleaner looking one instead of pulling it directly from your original piece.

4. I'd like to see the floor and walls of the bedroom just like in your original. maybe a window...don't have time to go look at the original now som i'm just going off of what i remember. actually i think the reason the background looks strange is because it's not on a wall...

5. i don't know why but the lines outlining the monster look kinda choppy in this version compared to the last few.

6. i like the spots on the monster except for the placement of the ones on his face, they distract me when looking at his facial expression so maybe play around with the placement of those.



Maybe even post the original on here to see what others think...you'll get all kinds of "too many colors" comments but i think it might be useful anyways

Ya I agree that the pattern on the kid's pj's and on the bottom of the shirt are distracting. I do like that there is something happening around the bottom, just not that design.

Don't get why you added the orange floral-like border on the bottom.... without is way better.

I like the idea, but to me the way the child is sleeping against the monster looks not natural. I think it'd improve tue design a lot if he was leaning back against the monsterwith his feet stcking out.



To give the kid a sense of weight, you could make the monster furry, and make it apear as though the kid was sinking into the fur.



I'm not sure if the pillow in the kids hand is working, it looks more like an eraser? Of course if you went the furry monster route you might not need a pillow at all.

I really like it...but with the clean/simple/smooth look in v.2 and the stars and moon from v.4.

Oh yeah..



After staring at it a little longer, the shadows are cool, but they need to follow the coutours of the moster and the kid. That will ad a sense of depth to the picture

i like him the way he is. the moon/stars in this one are great and i like the tail shadow too. definitely the dark shirt...it looks great on that color!



maybe play with the stars, right now the three lines of stars looks a little strange even though i do like them.

I like this moon alot, but liked this on the darker blue shirt, I think the stars being sprinkled over the top are a little distracting for me personally, but I'd still probably buy this for my wife or if I had a kid the way it is too.

oh and keep in mind that critique comments on here often take a few whole days to get a range of opinion because of scheduals etc. so if someone doesn't comment for a few hours, it's not all that bad

i lightened the blue so people could see the shadows better.

The most comments I have gotten was probably 10 in a 3 day period.

i just figured people here did not like the design.

also they seem to have enough time to post work and comment on the comments I have left them.

i think once you get the stars worked out it's going to be really good. i think you should just stick em all over the place, the more the better although i think the spacing in between the individual stars should be about the same as it is now. i'm not liking the moon on the sleeve, i thought it lo0oked great where it was on the last version.



i like the idea of having something/someone sprinkling the stars, but it's definitely not necessary. some people would probably consider it to be too much since the concept is already conveyed as it is...personally i love little extra's llike that though so it's your call.

still think the stars could use some work and after looking at the shadows some more i actually agree with lajlaj that the monster/kid don't need them...especially if you use the denim colored shirt which i hope you do because it makes the stars pop and it looks great. it's soooo close to greatness i can feel it.

def keep the moon and stars. i also agree that the shadow tail looks kinda like a second tail instead of a shadow. oh and i think it might look a little better if the monsters butt was crouched down a little more.

Love this one on the dark blue t, so cute.

There's something that's really bothering me about the shadows in the moon; they seem to be made by a shape tool and don't look organic at all.

the shadow was made with a pen tool, and the moon with a shape tol. I an make them more organic.

the bed... perhaps that there's no shading? somethings off, it looks like a lego to me. but i love the monster and the little kid and the idea, i just (sadly) dont htink its there yet.

I will see what I can do about the bed as well as the moon. Though I don't really know what to do about the moon since well the moon is round and not a very organic shape in nature. Any ideas on this? I want a full moon.

i like the idea of thrown back covers, and i think with the moon, if it was shaded, like the circles in the moon were a bit more rough to make it look more cratery. what if you took the ladder out so the eye really focuses on the adorable boy and monster?

the ladder does draw you eyes a bit, but i think a ladder is need, a bed that high definatly needs a ladder, and also i like the idea of the messed up covers

its surrealistic, so the bed can be high... no kid has a bed that tall anyway. and theres a monster!

I like it dark blue. Also agree with the comments about the stars under the bed/on the monster. Maybe keep them behind the figures in the background. They also still look a little regular. Can you put some bigger stars scattered through?

so how many people think this would be better with a floor? Just wondering because it may take away from the organic shape of this.

i dislike the floor!!! il ike the organic shape and the "off in space dreaming" quality its created. i agree about the stars, but without a floor line maybe keep a few below them? The bend in the folded blanket appears confusing, it seems that it is bending on the edge of the bed, which is contrary to your perspective, i'd redo that but other then that i say its very nice

I think firriness could have been good, as could losing the pillow, but maybe that's just the power of suggestion. Cool idea.

one last thing though... i know i said you should add a shadow for the tail, but i'm going to take that back now. i think it was better without. that's it though i cross my heart.



the only other thing, which is a side note, is that both your current designs right now have starry backgrounds. i don't know if this is a reasonable concern, but it might not be good to submit them back to back if you want them both to have a shot at winning...just a thought.

i think the shadow for the tail is weird, for one its a different color from the rest of the shadow in the pic and im not sure i like the shadow at all, but i love the rest of the pic. its so cute

i don't think you should wait to submit them because they both have stars in them, i think you should space them apart because they both look to me like they'll go over super well here, but maybe they tend to limit one winner per person in any given time period, and i think both of these could win but maybe not both at the same time.



i'm not sure how things work around here. people are gonna eat this up, though. well done.

i agree the blanket does look a little funny. the edges of the monster are also a bit rough compared to the edges on the bed, although maybe that's what you are going for? also the edges on the monsters mouth.

i like the new lines on the monster a lot. the blue on the folded back sheet looks strange to me though. i like the outline part of the blue, but i think the fold lines might need a bit more work. otherwise i love it, as with the rest of your stuff.

Neil has been my favourite author for almost 20 years, it's so hard to chose just *one* favourite...;-)



For sentimental reasons my favourite novel is Neverwhere, followed closely by Good Omens and Stardust (although I do prefer the illustrated version). My favourite Sandman collection is The Kindly Ones, and my favourite short story collection is Angels and Visitations.

Angels and Visitations was his first short story collection, and was out of print for many years, so it's not surprising you hadn't heard of it before. :) It was reprinted two years ago and is now easily attainable and you should DEFINITELY buy a copy. *grins*



Since it was hard to find for such a long time, several of the stories were printed in other collections, like Smoke and Mirrors and M is for Magic, so many of them will be familiar to you, but as a whole this is is best collection, and the most fun to read. I *love* it. :)
