Russian ninja doll eliminates the enemy... Pirates!
bashango on Nov 24 '10
I think this is right on.. the ninja's expression is great ^_^ the smaller pirate on the right could use a little more work.. but i like this a lot.
if you don't mind scoring my design, i'd appreciate it. thanks :) |
MissYu on Nov 24 '10
I like your take on the russian dolls. Can you make the left piece, the one on its side, a bit more angled, like in a better perspective because the angle its at is a little odd (looks like a tongue). And enhance the shadows. You can also explore a background, but not necessary; simple is nice.
bashango on Nov 24 '10
perhaps more dramatic lighting and shadows too. to make them pop
agmattie on Nov 25 '10
Haha, this looks awesome. I'd love to see it in greater detail. i also agree with changing the perspective of the upper half of the leftmost figure. Also, why is there a smaller pirate doll in the left base and not the right?
WaldemarBorowski on Nov 25 '10
clever design :) maybe bold thick shadows and bigger dolls?

ok i changed it up a bit, and made them bigger with a bigger shadow and ... ya dont know how else to make them pop really
any suggestions? cheers |
katafrul on Nov 25 '10
The perspective of the pirate on the left looks off. Or is he flying through the air? "Assassination" is spelled incorrectly :)
I would love it you could take a look at my design: stereotyping It's my first submission on Threadless! |
nabes on Nov 25 '10
i wasnt really concerned with the correct spelling of that word, seeing as its not on the t shirt itself. if it did get printed im sure threadless could correct that i
but the pirate on the left was supposed to be as if the ninja had just cut him and the upper body was falling down to the ground... didnt really know how else to draw that thanks thou |
charleyH88 on Nov 25 '10
Yes the others are right work a little on the pirate. Misspelling can be fixed at sub. Keep up the good work!

WaldemarBorowski on Nov 26 '10
Looks better. Maybe no gradients on the shadow, just simply all black round shadow?
-PiDjO- on Nov 26 '10
agree with WaldemarBorowski. also add shades on the characters ;-)
-PiDjO- on Nov 26 '10
oh and dont forget to remove the transparency on one of the character's back. :-)
nabes on Nov 26 '10
ok thanks, id add shades on the characters but then id be over 8 colours
KaMi WorkShop on Nov 26 '10
New version is much better! I agree on the others who say the left big pirate should be on the ground, also because the sword of the ninja is already in his/her belt!
Shadow of the right pirate should be closer to the body and the "harder" part of it should be all along the body imo. Also the shadow of the ninja looks like it's floating! It's really funny otherwise! :D If you have a spare minute please score and comment on my design! Bamboo Dealer :) |
nabes on Nov 29 '10
ok i updated the shadows, made them darker "harder" from the middle out and put that left pirate down onto his side instead of falling through the air. i was gonna just put black shadows underneath them all, but it looked kinda funny.
what does you all think now? |
awl_rock on Nov 29 '10
not sure on the gradient shadows, try using a darker shade of the T-shirt colour - green.
You could also show more stages of the doll lying on the ground so you can only see one complete doll (the smallest) lying by itself. Andy Feedback appreciated: http://www.threadless.com/critique/37599/The_briefing |
Dizk on Nov 29 '10
looks good, I agree on the shadow, you might want to experiment with making them all black
please critique |
Tafata on Nov 29 '10
....try the black shadow, but i think it's almost ready to be submitted.
krudtugle on Nov 29 '10
Nice idea you got there! :)
I agree on awl rock, try make the gradient shadow only black. Maybe you could try make some assassinated bodies behind the ninja? I'm not sure if its too much details. or try replace the figures elsewhere to see what view it then would give. keep up the good work! I've answered your question about my design |

nabes on Nov 29 '10
ok everyone seems to want the black shadows, but i think it looks like these weird portals underneath them.
but the people ask and i shall deliver so here ya go |
charleyH88 on Nov 29 '10
I wouldn't use black. If you can make it transparent gray so it looks more like a shadow. Keep it Up!

-PiDjO- on Nov 30 '10
you say you'd be over 8 colors if you add shades. but you can use black (or one color you already used in your design) shades working on the transparency of the layer on photoshop.
good luck :-) Btw my Alice's tea party is being scored ! you're welcome to vote and comment :-) |
WaldemarBorowski on Nov 30 '10
Looks a lot better! Shadows of killed pirates are perfect. One more thing - make the shadows of standing ones a little smaller.
Tafata on Nov 30 '10
i think the same about the standing pirates' shadow...try to make them a bit smaller..
If you have a minute let me know what do you think about my last version of Reverse Idea |
padma420 on Nov 30 '10
Agree with WaldemarBorowski.
I like your concept |
bluetypo on Nov 30 '10
I like the idea, just try to use green in the shadows, maybe looks transparent.
nabes on Nov 30 '10
added some shading, and made the shadows on the smaller pirates, well smaller
did the shading with multiply transparency so i dont know if that makes it over 8 colours or not? does anyone understand those flash templates? cuz i dont, but i dont know how to use flash |
Tafata on Nov 30 '10
I think that the shadows are much better now...about the flash i can't help you, i don't know how to use flash too...
debbilboy on Nov 30 '10
Each shade counts toward your 8 colours. I think you're right at the maximum, but it's hard to tell from your image.
To make a flash file (.swf), you'll need to own a copy of Adobe Flash. Then you can download one of these templates & import your images. Please critique Jiffy Squid, if you have time. |
debbilboy on Nov 30 '10
I didn't mention, but I like the design. It is hard to tell what the little guys inside the pirates look like: could you post a detail view?
nabes on Nov 30 '10
this is a detailed version of the characters, what does everyone think about it? almost ready to submit i think
maitasuna on Nov 30 '10
yes, I think its great ;)
debbilboy on Nov 30 '10
Imagine a single light source for the characters, say, above the ninja. Then: the shadows on the left figures would project forward & left, & the shadows on the right would project forward & to the right. The ninja's shadow wouldn't change. I think that would improve the composition.
The "skew" or "perspective" tool in your drawing program should do the trick. |
jerlyndr8 on Nov 30 '10
I like the previous version more than this one.
Please take a second of you time to comment my design here Thanks! |
SayadaR on Nov 30 '10
I'm not sure if i'm getting it.is it 1 ninja doll that's sliced 2 pirate dolls in half, exposing a smaller pirate doll in each?
nabes on Nov 30 '10
im guessing sayadar as never seen or heard of those russian dolls that open up and when you open them there is a samller one inside until a certain size.
charleyH88 on Dec 01 '10
Getting better! I agree with debbilboy i would work on the shadowing a little bit more. I know it's frustrating, but you will get there!

thank you for your valuable comment. |

noelhathorn on Dec 01 '10

Also, if you have time I'd appreciate it if you could score my design... |
nabes on Dec 01 '10
ok here is a flash presentation of it, hopefully the flash file works this time, and i added the shading on the right sides as well.
what do you all think now |
illogicomio on Dec 01 '10
like it,
it's funny an well done |
debbilboy on Dec 01 '10
Make sure your close-up is the proper dimensions, i.e. 640 x 800 pixels. Right now it's distorted because you imported a file with the wrong width & height.
And by all means, work on the shadows. It's a good concept -- it just needs refining. Jiffy Squid needs your comment! |
nabes on Dec 01 '10
actually i did use 640 x 800 pixels for the close up and thats how it came out. i keep adding or changing the shadows i dont know how else to change it
thanks |
photojenic on Dec 01 '10
i would work with the shadows some more, as they dont have a common light source. They look nice, but adding an angle to them and having them all go the same direction would add more depth. I'm assuming that they are being chopped in half and theres more little dolls inside. What if you had one the way they are, but the other one be cut again so that the guy inside is even smaller. Make it a little more interesting. Please critique mine
DedeG on Dec 01 '10
This is great! I agree with fine-tuning the shadows a bit. But you could definitely accomplish that, you have some obvious talent.

alanhasa9 on Dec 02 '10
haha! thiss funni, what are the peole inside the pirates??
and also the shadowing is fine to me wat i would suggest would be placing all the characters like on a ring, maybe, or something similar, because right now it seems they are just floating, or make something to it so they are actually floating, but other than that great figurines |

Test Movie (or press CTL + ENTER) to preview the clip. Also, include a preview on an official template (required when you submit this for scoring).
Jiffy Squid isn't flashy, but he wants your opinion. |

1st part of my post is missing. Should read "When you make your next Flash presentation, go to Control » Test Movie (or press CTL + ENTER) […]"

ok i changed the shading a bit to what i thought it needed, other then that i think it looks good. does anyone have any more suggestions on what to do?
nabes on Dec 06 '10
oh also gave some shading underneath the bearded fellows
Pseudooctopus on Dec 06 '10
I like the design over all (and the concept, it's adorable). The only thing that jumped out at me was the shadows as well, like Fezbeast wrote. The solid black keeps drawing the eye back, and it distracts from what is otherwise a strong design. Perhaps fade the shadow, or have it be a lesser shade? Keep working this though, it's a good piece.

I'm totally loving the design. The only thing that seems off is that the Ninja has a highlight and the others don't. They feel a little flat because of that! But nice nevertheless!
If you have a moment, please let me know what you think of "Instant Summer". |
nabes on Dec 06 '10
allright i went back to the original shadows that everyone seemed to not like, but now everyone likes again, whats up with that!?
and i also took the hightlite off of the ninja as it has been requested does it look good now? |
nabes on Dec 06 '10
oh and check the previous ones, and let me know whats your favorite please
thanks |
nabes on Dec 06 '10
ya ia know thanks, its just frustrating when some people say this, and others say that. but i appreicate it oh and i did use a gradial radiant guess it dont look like it thou
G.O.B. on Dec 06 '10
DUDE I know what to do to solve your shadow problem. Take away the gradient and do a solid color again. but instead of black use the dark grey that you used to shade their pants!!! Try it, it might work!
would you comment on mine when you can please? cumulus |
holydolphin on Dec 07 '10
I'd use flat colour for the shadow, gradient in general doesn't translate well in t shirts like GOB suggested (for the reference I saw the previous version and I have no problem with it being black either)
and as many conflicts there are in people's comments, you have the last word, so do what you believe in remember the saying "A camel is a horse designed by committe" its very good to take on board other people's comment and critics, but just don't lose YOUR main message, and in this case I think the shadows are just minor, your main message and illustration is great, I'd say decide on the shadow and submit it because we can keep being nitpicky about every little things if we want to :) |
nabes on Dec 07 '10
ok i think i finally have the shadows perfect on this one! and also changed up the ninjas belt colour, and played around with the outlines a bit on the dolls. but dont know if i like them w/out the black lines
what does everyone think of that then? |
nabes on Dec 07 '10
oh and i couldnt get rid of all the black lines that outline them, cuz it wouldnt work that way and wouuld probly take me another 4 hours or something
holydolphin on Dec 07 '10
I'd keep the black lines anyway, the black line frames the shape of the objects and makes the color transitions clearer
love the shadow change nothing else to say from me, its great the only thing that I'd do now is just see if there're other T shirt colors that you like better for the sake of presentation, but personally, I like the green. great job :) |
tomHunt on Dec 07 '10
love it. really minor point, but to me the ninja feels just a bit too far to the right. it's so slightly off the golden third that it unsettles the composition. maybe move a few nudges to the left?
minor crit though, great design. |
noelhathorn on Dec 07 '10
There is something about the composition that doesn't work for me, it is a sort of inverted t-shape as it is, and I think that maybe it could be stronger. For instance, being as there is an assassin, maybe he/she should be better camouflaged, like a smaller 'doll' inside a hedge/camouflaged doll. I also feel that all the pirate dolls inside the pirate doll should also be attacked. Then maybe only one other doll but with lots of bodies. Does that makje any sense?
G.O.B. on Dec 07 '10
keep the black outline on the pants, and the grey shadows look "grey-ate"!
