I'd really appreciate some feedback on this idea and this design approach. I like the surreal feeling of the stark figures on orange but I'd like to know how well the concept comes across, and if there are obvious areas for improvement. I've got another look for the same concept which I might draw up and add later as well. Choices can be a good thing! Note: This picture is basically a digital colour sketch under a pencil sketch. I'd probably tighten it up for a final version but I'm not sure how much; sketchiness can be nice. Any thoughts are welcome!

i think turning greek statues in to western figures is a bit of stretch for most people to figure out. maybe if you added the originals somewhere in the background or made the figures a part of a scene like in a bar or on a ranch it would work better.http://www.threadless.com/critique/68899/tvtree
|
|
chrx on Jun 01 '10
I recognized the statues at once as I saw the picture... in my opinion the originals are not necessary; overall the design is very nice, I would only make the pencil lines a bit darker over the colors ...
maybe a brighter tee color background would also make the picture stand out better |

Thanks folks for the feedback, and thanks JCMaziu for the compliments! I can see I've got some experimenting to do with this design. Now to find the time to do it! It doesn't seem to be the sort of concept that grabs people on its own, but with the right art style it might really 'sing'. Or it might not. I think it's worth trying!

Not much for me to say here; the changes are all easy to see!

Cool. Here is what i saw when I looked at the design. First I saw a woman with no arms, and thought (huh?) Then I kind of got the venus to milo thing. Then i saw the guy in front (david) and then the whole thing clicked. I think it works great as long as the viewer knows something about art. If they don't, who cares. I like the color and drawing very much.
I could use some feedback too. |

Thanks for the encouragement and specific advice! It worries me a bit that a lot of people might miss the concept completely. I hoped that showing more detail (v2) might help, but the stronger silhouettes in v1 might actually be better. I might try one or two more versions. I'm pretty happy with v2 as a design but if a bit of extra effort can increase the number of people who might enjoy it, it's worth the time spent! Maybe a combo of v1 and v2.
|
|
Laser Bear on Jun 13 '10
this might sound weird. but you might try making their skin grey and stone-colored. I feel like that would REALLY solidify the concept because i am worried that when you submit you will get a lot of low scorers because people are going to see your design, see an armless lady, and just immediately give you a 1.

Wow! Very clever!
V2 is great, though I like the background colour of version 1, sort of a 'Monument Valley' orange much more vibrant. Nice one though :) |
|
jmg14 on Jun 14 '10
Combining the two versions might be a good idea. I like the style of both versions. I really feel that David looks much clearer in V2 though. You've reproduced his face just perfectly and I would hate to see you lose that. The thinker might be easier to identify if you did not have the stick.
|
|
I tried for a combination of the previous two versions, with varying degrees of success. I think it's a lot easier to get the concept now, thanks to suggestions about skin colour and a couple of other things.

Laser Bear on Jun 26 '10
one minor issue - i think venus' hair should be stone-colored as well. David's hair is stone, and i think it makes him look much more like a statue. The same should be done for venus. This way it literally looks like they are statues that have western clothes on them.
|
|
I've made a couple of changes as suggested, which I think improve the clarity, plus a couple of monochromatic colour options which add a different feel. I've also gone for an emphasis on stone instead of more organic materials in the environment which I hope helps things along as well.

I think this is great! I'm not sure which one I like better, but I think the like the solid looking ones better because it makes it feel more like sculptures. Love the illustration. Great use of perspective. I love how you used the rocks to define the ground. Really good job!

I also prefer the monocrome versions, as they remind more of sculptures; maybe I slightly prefer the gray one (I like the effect of the two-colors contrast), but I like both...
|
|
drawingnut on Jul 16 '10
I like the color one the best but I also like the gray because it feels more like a statue being a stoney color and all. You should sneak in some wild life like a cactus, snake, or vulture or something. I think by adding some life it would make the statues feel that much more lifeless. Keep up the good work and good luck.
critique me 2 please :) |
|
A small change, but I think it makes the concept a little clearer and adds a bit more visual variety. It also seems to fit some of the feedback you guys have left which gives me more confidence that this is the way to go. Unfortunately this is still a mockup version; I still have to put together the final art! I haven't counted the colours on this version but I'm sure I can make it work. I have to fix up the stones and one or two other things as well.

I think you should stick with V4 becauase the contrast between the very colorful clothes and the stone skin brings your theme of the shirt out more. I think version 4 is finished. Version 5 is too muted and drab in my opinion. Great Work! Peace.

For those who are following this, sorry for taking so long! I've been a lot busier than expected over the last few weeks. obatala112233: those are good points about v4 but I think I'll go ahead with v5 because this thing has to get finished sometime! Still, there's always room for one more tweak...

This version was intended to just be a polished version (the previous pics look okay at low res but pretty bad at full detail) ready to be converted to vectors and submitted, but I decided to try a change of colour in the mountains to see if that helped communicate the stone idea a bit better. I can't believe it's taken so long to get this far; just a few minutes here and there among a lot of non-art stuff!

Caddywompus on Sep 17 '10
Well done, you gotta be happy to have it near completion after this long.
I've been flipping back and forth between the v5 & v6. The mountain range seems to work fine at a distance, up close I wish is where more apart of the landscape as opposed to that grey slate dropped into the background. The rock the thinker is sitting on looks better in v5. The line work in that one reads better as rock as opposed to these solid uniform think lines that look to be made by a pen. Though the shadows towards the bottom look better in v6. I would add the rock you removed in v5 back in too. Nice subtle improvements between the last two versions. What program did you use for this design? |

I'd add some ground lines on either side of the background mountain, so it doesn't look as much like it's pasted on/floating. Awesome design though! I'd definitely wear it.
If you have time, I'd love it if you could critique my design! http://www.threadless.com/critique/76219/Roller_Deer_est |
|
Thanks for the insightful advice and encouragement! I still like the idea of the mountain being the light stone colour but it does look a bit odd, so I've abandoned that idea. I've tried to reduce the 'stuck-on' mountain effect by suggesting a bit more of a horizon, and also creating a stronger sense of a ground plane between the foreground and background by extending the mountains forward a little and adding rocks behind the characters that lead back towards the mountain. One comment was about the line style; I agree that some parts look better with the sketchy style but I'd made a choice to go with vectors for the final file, which meant using clean lines. I've tried to compromise with this version by making the rocks a bit closer to v5 in design, although keeping the clean lines.
|

dominiquemariano on Sep 18 '10
Wow! This design has definitely evolved over time. I love how you used clean lines and neutral colors to render this concept. How you used the rocks and the mountain to add depth was simply amazing. I think you should submit this now.
