Number 3!

2 colors. One thing I'm not sure about is the hyena's chest sort of pokes out under the lion's jaw. The only way you can really distinguish it from the lion's mane is the texture difference. Anatomically speaking, the chest needs to be there to keep the hyena in proportion. Aesthetically speaking, I'm not sure if I should take it out or not.

Whoa, nice! It looks really cool! It'd be nice to see it on a shirt. The giraffe and the implied horizon looks a bit awkward coming out of the hyena's head. And the hyena looks like it might be as tall as the zebra which seems slightly odd. These are just nit-picky little things. For the most part it looks awesome!!

I see what you're saying about the hyena looking like it's the same height as the zebra, but correcting this would be really awkward, as the zebra and the hyena ARE in fact very different in height, but it wouldn't work on a tshirt, as the hyena would be very low and the zebra high up on the tee. So I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure there's an aesthetic way of fixing it..

As for the horizon, I could fix that.. would it be better moving it below all of the animals? Or above all of their heads?

about hiena- don't you find that thorns look like they are not on the head but behind? lion and zebra are correct i think. size of hiena is ok, I don't see a prob with size.

maybe smth not right with horizon- giraffe stands on the edge of the world? Front is so detailed- just WOW- and silouette of giraffe is hmm.. not WOW.

I see what you're saying about the hyena's mohawk! It does look like they're sort of in the distance now that you mention it.. I will definitely get right on that :o And the giraffe is so far away, it would be hard to detail him without looking sort of awkward.. And the horizon is sort of awkward.. maybe I'll make the horizon more grassy or something..

I was also thinking about doing some sort of starburst effect in the back, sort of like a cartoon-y sunset. Any comments on that?

I think try to avoid cartoony look. And don't overload it.

These 3 are so real! Just superb!

But giraffe and the ground are too much stylised. Giraffe looks a bit hulking, esp. feet. I couldn't do better. But you can I think.

Ok, I changed the horizon line and made it grassy. No one made any suggestion about where to move the horizon, so I kept it in the same spot. I moved the whole design over a little so I could make the lion fade out a little so it wouldn't look like a box when put on a shirt. And after the design is perfected, I'll start talking placement. But for now I want to focus on the design itself.

The scale of the hyena in relation to the other animals makes it look very bear like. It's quite large, which suggests that the other animals are small. Get what I am sayin'? Your technical prowess is intimidating....

Few niggles which you can ignore if you want:



I'm not sure about the placement of the Hyena's first spike, maybe brig it slightly forward so it overlaps the back of the ear.



Also the spikes look almost like horn, I don't know if there is a way to make them look more like hair, maybe a few stray tufts?

I see what you're saying.. the lion and zebra are proportionally correct, but the hyena's head should be a little smaller in length than the lion, which is certainly not the case in the design.. It will be fixed :3

Bah, this hyena is causing quite a few problems hah, I see what you're saying about the first spike. I'll move it forward. And I'll see how a few stray hairs sticking out of the spikes work, good idea :)

Giraffe in the mist you say? Maybe I'll try a half tone of the background over it.. I think mist would break up the silhouette nicely :)

Ok, I added in a few stray hairs and tufts. Shrunk the hyena to the right proportions. Shrinking the hyena down meant the body of the hyena had to come more into view, so now you can see its right front leg. Anatomically it should be there, aesthetically speaking I'm unsure about it..

I also noticed the lion didn't have any whiskers, so I added those in too.

And as suggested, I made the giraffe sort of coming out of the mist, but I'm not sure how I feel about it.. the mist looks sort of odd.. so any other suggestions about how to break up the giraffe silhouette (without adding too much detail to it) would be awesome!

Wooow great illustration and its actually pretty funny. The only thing id say is that it should be on a more natural color, like creme or sand. But other than that, its pretty damn good!!

I had thought about trying different color schemes like the one you suggested. For whatever reason, when I imagined this design I ALWAYS pictured it in blue, so I thought I would try it in blue first. Maybe the next step after the design is finalized is to try different color schemes then!

This is a fantastic illustration..I had seen this before from version 1 and the small changes you made with the grass and the hyena made alot of difference, but as someone pointed out before the giraffe hair and the hyena spikes need to be addressed.

Gr lol, I didn't think anything was wrong with the giraffe's hair.. And what's still wrong with the hyena's hair specifically? I've fixed the front spike of the hyena already(for V4) cus it still looked a little funny, but I didn't know there was much else wrong with its hair.. I was told they look like they were behind the hyena instead of part of it, but I thought I managed to fix it and that it looks better now haha, so would you elaborate on what you think is still wrong?

great illos! At first i thought the hyena was a dog :P I don't know if you'd be up for changing that this late in the process but a rhino or hippo may work better. This would look great with a side placement. About the giraffe silhouette, i don't even think you need it.

Move it forward and to the centre of the top part of his head. Like the lions.

Instead of waiting for people to comment, I just made the giraffe layer invisible and see how everyone liked the design without it. I fixed the hyena's front spike up a little as well.

Ok, so it looks like SOMETHING should be kept in the background. I'm still a little apprehensive about putting a rhino in because this is supposed to be about mohawks that can be made out of an animals natural hair, or about natural mohawk-like manes animals already have, and rhinos don't have much of that..

amazing. this is a fuckin winner fersure. show placement! maybe worth playing with colors too (brown on yellow?).... but i like the blue. alot. good call on loosing the giraffe too.



only thing that slightly bothers me is the border between the zebra and hyena could use a dark line, or a light one.. but thats just cause i'm lookin for things.

Zoso1 - Exactly what I was thinking, I plan on trying different colors, but I just always pictured this design in blue, so I just thought I might as well start out with that color scheme :P. I also see what you're saying about the zebra and hyena.. I'm not sure how to put a line between them that looks realistic.. I'm unfortunately somewhat OCD and pretty much force my art to look as realistic as possible (excluding that these animals are sporting liberty spikes). So I'll try to find a good way to distinguish them a little more while meeting my own standards :P

i think adding a little subtle light line on the edge of that medium tone could totally pass as a realistic highlight and help seperate the animals (still talking about the zebra/hyena.) maybe just on the upper part, above the dark part of the hyena. but whatevs, its not a deal breaker, you'd get a $ from me as is. your anal approach to realistic rendering paid off on this one.

I don't know if you've said where the placement would be on a tee, but I imagine this on the bottom right! I love it.

Zoso1 - Oooo I see what you're saying.. Using the tee color as a highlight on that part would be an excellent idea :) I guess that's what I'll work on, the new version might not be up for a week or so, I have Finals and then Christmas :C.. it's gona be busy

Ok, I added a highlight between the zebra and the hyena to distinguish them from eachother a little more. I also added a little bit of shading/line work stuff to define the lion's chin a little more.

Royalstar - I would try different mohawks, but I'm not exactly sure what other kinds there are besides the traditional solid mohawk. I can't use the traditional one on the hyena or the zebra because they both naturally have that, and it would sort of be like.. why is that zebra just sitting there without any kind of awesome mohawk? Doing it on the lion would be VERY cool, but the lion is in the front, and having the traditional mohawk would pretty much cover up all of the zebra's hair.. so that's why I chose to just do consistent liberty spikes.

Feeling a lot better about the lion's chin now :) thoughts?

Wow... I love your work. I think I've been on threadless since your first design went through. I even gave you feedback on it when you were still in the critique phase, lol. Was it the one with the cat that painted himself as a tiger? Anyway - This one looks pretty tight, but I'm having a hard time distinguishing whose spikes are whose. My only suggestion would be to not put them all at exactly the same level... maybe make the lion a bit smaller than the zebra since he's closer to the ground in real life, and the dog even lower than that, just so it's easier to distinguish the spikes. It looks pretty tight right now though.

Hmm.. I see what you're saying.. unfortunately, I don't think I can move the hyena down much more, or else it'll be covered by the zebra. Against my realistic tendencies, I think I'm going to keep it the height that it is, purely for the aestheticness of the design.

Also the thing that I think is really tripping you up with distinguishing the spikes might be that the zebra has alternating dark and light spikes. It confuses me a bit too sometimes :s I'll see if I can fix that a little bit.. I'm not sure how I'll do it lol, but I'll see what I can come up with.

Ok, made a quick few adjustments to the zebra's spikes to make them see a little more attached to eachother.

I think this is a very cool idea executed nicely! At first glance the looked like a unicorn's horn to me so you could probably make them look a bit more hairy or colored in shades of green or red. Otherwise I really love it!

Eponymon - Thanks! I see what you mean about the unicorn horn thing. My brother said something about that when he saw my design. I don't think I'm going to use anymore colors though, especially ones that don't fit the monotone look of this design : I could, however, make them look a little more hairy and add a few stray hairs like I've already got going. I can't add too many though, it makes them look a little frazzled and it doesn't look too good :C

I rather like the placement, I think it's fine. It'd be interesting to see what it looks like mirrored though. You'd be surprised how different artwork can look from another view. I think it could probably work from either the right or the left though.

Thanks for the comments again. I've submitted the design and now it's just pending approval. I've been using Illustrator and Photoshop for this design and downloaded some free watercolor texture brushes to get the effect on the clouds.
