i think i would use a paler, more delicate background, but then i'm not a big fan of red. and i'm curious how it would look with just the thought bubble? more abstract, i guess, but that's not a bad thing.
|
|
Pyros82 on Nov 04 '09
I'm not so sure what are you suggesting about the the thought bubble? To remove the sleeping cat?
About the BG color, it's just a suggestion :) I think the design would work on other colors as well. Thanks for the feedback! |
|
RoeeSch on Nov 04 '09
I think that the cats do not know that the washing machine should be their worst nightmare and that is why they keep on finding themselves in these terrible situations. Maybe have the cat sleeping on the floor and dreaming of sleeping in the washing machine? behatslaha.

Well, considering this and this, I thought that such a cat biggest nightmare would be the washing machine (cue evil laugh)...
Changes: Added detail to machine door. Also made the glass of the door deform the view of what's behind it. Added detail in the "mouth" of the machine. Makes it look more evil. Changed the posture of the machine a bit. Added some more expression to the sleeping cat. Any more comments? Thanks! |

the style of animation you are using is good for the washing machine monster, but the cat at the bottom looks tacky and rushed.
my recommendation. cut out the cat at the bottom and the dream cloud, make the whole design be whats inside of the dream cloud. |
|
theCRAZYartGUY on Nov 08 '09
ya I agree with mancherje, and i think you should also put it onto a shirt so we could see what it would look like.

Of some reason, cats have a tendancy to get machine washed... I think it's their biggest nightmare, thus the illustration.
For example, take This and this. I've made a version without the sleeping cat, and put it on a shirt. Also showed placement of the one with the sleeping cat, and trying different colors. So... Now I need some input: Really drop the sleeping cat? What colors are best for the Tee? I think more colors might fit as well, but really need some feedback on that. Thanks! |
|
TimmyBlaze on Nov 11 '09
Hmmm...looking at it on a shirt, the bottom left actually looks the best, as per your original design. Sorry for being indecisive!
There's something wierd about the sleeping cat though, and I think it's that bulge behind the tail...it looks like it's hiding a 2nd tail. Also the head looks lort of disconnected from the back, like the line of the back just sort of stops at some point behind the cat's right ear. |
|
SBV5 on Nov 11 '09
I agree. With so much going on in the dream bubbly, the sleeping cat needs more dimensionality. He's too "blobby." He needs more curves :)
Alos, I like the black and blue backgrounds. Maybe the red is better for the overall concept, but I wouldn't wear the red one, personally. |

For example, take This and this. I've changed the background to fit the shirt color (also checked kuler to make sure it would work). As suggested, I filled up the dream bubble and made it even more menacing. I hope the nightmarish feeling passes through better now. Your thoughts? Thanks! |
|
mamaGiraffe on Nov 18 '09
The cat looks to be sleeping so peacefully, like it is unaware of the nightmare he's having. Of course, he is sleeping, so there's not a lot you can do about that. Maybe furrow the brow a bit to make him look worried. Otherwise, it looks great.
Thanks for your comments on mine! |

I guess a cat nap isn't always a positive experience! Furrowing the brow like mamaGiraffe said might add something, and maybe even just a few hairs sticking up on the back of the sleeping cat.

Hey, thanks for comments on mine. Like the concept here and feel it could only improve with some more work. Specifically, shading, or maybe some distressed texture(?), and try different cloud/thought bubble color - think the dark brown is a bit overpowering for the rest of the design. Perhaps the washing machine arms could be more machine-like/robotic to give them more relevance. The oval glass door shape needs a bit of refining.
|
|
simcha123456 on Nov 21 '09
nice!!
|
|
TimmyBlaze on Nov 22 '09
Only a small point; I'd like to see that cat in the thought bubble look more scared. Right now he looks more started than anything. Other than that, I don't think there's much more you should do with this...though i agree that the brown bg in the bubble overpowers it a bit. As for texture and shading, I'm personally a fan of flat-colour cartooning, but it's really up to you.
|
|
Bennish on Nov 22 '09
i think the machine looks fine, and the cat in the bubble looks fine. It's just the sleeping cat... looks MUCH better than it did, and the paws are just awesome. I think it just needs some slight refinement.
I'm looking forward to this one though. Hope it gets in. take a look at mine? thanks! November Equation |
|
Bennish on Nov 22 '09
i think i know what it is about the cat - i feel that maybe its outline should be thick, but perhaps its features should be more hairline? finer features. Does that make sense?
|
|
Pyros82 on Nov 24 '09
I don't know.. Usually when people do that, they get comments like "use the same line weight, it looks bad having two line weights"...
I think I've reaced a point where for every aspect ,the two opposite opinions exist... Maybe I should just push it into the running and see how it goes... |
|
MariaSurducan on Nov 24 '09
Well you could try... But I say it's not ready yet.
I don't much like the background - it's a bit raw. And also, the bubble and the cat are both gray, it makes the whole scene difficult to read. Please take a look at mine |

I like it, especially the sleeping cat. The dream cat looks frightened, and I like the detail you gave in the hairs on his back.
The only thing that bothers me just a little is the red bursting from behind the dryer. The right side, behind the door, looks a little strange. It breaks the continuity of the whole shape. Critique mine? Thanks http://www.threadless.com/critique/55872/Heart_to_Heart |

I'm using GIMP. |

hipbopp on Dec 29 '09
I think the cat illustration is great, but the washing machine could use some more attention. Maybe add some more clothes in its mouth. Also, I think the shirt color was better blue. This version looks a bit too much like Christmas. Keep at it. Your concept is spot on.

RoeeSch on Dec 30 '09
I really appreciate your determination and perseverance with this one. It has really improved a lot since 54 days ago. I agree with the need to change the colors a bit. Maybe some softer colors (after all you don't want to wake up the cat). I also think that a bit of shade around the cat would help anchor the image on to the shirt. Cheers...

|
jmg14 on Dec 30 '09
The sleeping cat looks good but I agree the monster could be better. Also the design is very boxy right now. I would start thinking about moving the dream bubble to one side to create a more interesting angle. Everything is too centered right now.
You also may not need to include the cat again in his dream, you could just show the monster. Score mine if you have time: http://www.threadless.com/submission/247214/Face_Plant |

I don't know why it doesn't show my version comments, so here they are again:
UPDATES: Detailed the machine, and changed the machine's right eye (which of couse is on the left of the picture) to be the detergent drawer. Made the cat white! It draws more attention now, so the dream scene is put into context faster. Also docked it with some floor. I also tweaked the rest of the colors. And now for the twist... I experimeted with a radioactive-mutant-zombie color theme (AKA "Green"). Click the slideshow to see it! I'm quite confused about the colors and would love to hear what you think is best. So... Ready? Also... Red or Green? P.S. Thanks a lot for your help! It's been awsome learning how many different views could be on a single image, while trying to stay true to myself. Cheers. |

You might want to vector the lineart. It's kind of jagged as is. It's a very clever idea, you might just need to tweak the aesthetics.

Heckfyxtu on Jan 06 '10
Thx for your comment.
My proposition is to make an example with a t-shirt. It'd be much more representative. Acid colours are kind of ok, but I cannot say this for sure, maybe make them glow in the dark? Also make cat look more frightened or shiver, I don't know to express the idea of a nightmare. And cat's fur looks, as it was mentioned, too jagged, work on it. Moreover you could go with jsut 1 variant like just a cat and a washing machine, wo bubble and sleeping one. Anyone else who want to evaluate other's work ayou are welcomed here http://www.threadless.com/critique/59401/Guitar_Your_Heart_Out |

Tried to make the nightmare more nightmarish, by grayscaling everything but the red. I think it's more clear now that the cat and the dream are not on the same consciousness mode. Also added more dream bubbles, and got rid of the jagged red scare-thing.
You think it's ready now? |
|
cmcgu1 on Jan 07 '11
I like the concept, seems accurate. I especially like the cat's disturbed expression while it's sleeping. I'm also impressed with the amount of progress this design has made from the first submission and this color scheme is the best yet.
I agree with some of the other comments as far as readability. It's not clear that he's dreaming when the dream bubble is right behind him. Some previous comments suggested you abandon the dream aspect and just keep the scared cat and machine. I tend to agree with that. Maybe just do a version like that and see what the reaction is. You can also go back to the dreaming cat. Keep it up. It's a fun idea. |
