I've animated in this style before and was keen to revisit it, but I'm finding that tee design and animation aren't the same thing! I'm especially having trouble with choosing the tee colour, but I'd also be grateful for opinions on the colour design in general, as well as the character designs and whatever else you think needs commenting on!

I love this! I'm not sure if it's "threadless," but I would totally wear it! I don't think the shirt should be any color other than black/white/gray, because that would take the emphasis off of the color in the beaker. I actually really like the dark gray.

This picture looked like it got squished in the preview, but I'm hoping it comes out okay...

I'm having some trouble here. I do like the idea of a desaturated tee to keep the colour emphasis on the beaker but if a bright tee colour looks best then I think I'd go with that. The concept should still come across clearly. Does any particular colour stand out?

For me the brown, the dark grey and any of the blues work best...

i think a couple more colors in or coming out of the jar would add to the theme. like blue and red bubbles, steam, or swirls.

Thanks to people's comments I think it's about ready for submission, but I wanted to follow through on the suggestion to add a bit of extra colour to see if it would improve things. It may also change which tee colour is best. Do you think the new changes are a step forward, a step back, or just a step sideways?

Dark grey is my opinion--the color in beaker is much more significant if it's the ONLY color.

I really enjoy playing about with photos so I took the chance to have fun with this one for the presentation image. The most important thing is the design, of course! I think it could be a good fit for the Innovation contest although I didn't originally plan it for that.

Thanks for keeping an eye on this! I'm waiting for the approval process to decide on it. I'll give it a little longer before assuming it's slipped through the gaps somewhere. Unfortunately the long delay has kept it out of the Innovations contest but I'd still like to see it in the regular weekly contest, or have a chance to rework and resubmit it if there's a problem. Meanwhile I suppose I should get on with the next one!

Info needed: I've still got the option (in the little menu at the top right which I can see but you can't) to "Push this version into the running", but I went through all that on the 5th. Should the option have disappeared if everything worked properly? Basically, do I need to push it into the running again?

You won't believe it but I wanted to submit a design with exactly the same title for the Innovaion challenge which was rejected because of 'imprintability'. Even though mine was completely different I really think this is also great!

Well, I emailed Threadless and got a response very quickly, which was cool. I found out my submission was rejected because of an upload error, which is odd because I pushed it through from this critique, not from my hard drive! Probably very rare. Still, next time I'll submit directly!



This may be silly of me, but I thought I'd take the chance to try one last experiment. This is just a Photoshop sketch to test the idea, not the final linework. I'm happy to reject it and submit the previous one immediately if you like! I also wondered about a new title to broaden the theme from just colour, like "Classic Invention", "Crazy Invention", "Moment of Triumph" or something similar.

You know....I really, really, really liked it how you had it before....but I have to say I like this maybe a little better. It has so much depth! I like the sketchiness of it. If you refine it more, keep it simple, soft, and dark so as not to interfere with the moment of triumph.

I don't think the Innovation thing is an option now. They would've sent an email about the rejection, and if I'd got it in time I could still have made the challenge but it didn't seem to turn up although I've received their other emails okay (I've changed the email account I'm using in case it's causing problems). Basically, no-one seems to be at fault; just small technical issues and bad timing.



I like the sketchiness of the background as well. I'd refine it more but still keep it a bit rough and loose, maybe with the coloured beaker staying with the clean lines.

Thanks for the votes of confidence! I'll go ahead with a finished version of this then. The style is based on old Disney stuff (with a bit of Felix and other stuff of that era) but the characters aren't (they'd probably be out of copyright anyway), although maybe I should change them a bit more just so they're clearly original. I guess they don't have to be exactly the same style, just reminiscent of it.

Cool. I like it with the background.

Here's a full version of the background in pencil and also reworked characters (so they're clearly not copied from past characters). I hit a lot more trouble than I expected! Maybe I was thinking more about the printing process than trying to make a good picture. I'm very interested in any responses, especially to do with the facial hair!

Do you want this to look like an actual animation cell? If so then I agree that V4 characters with V6 background is the way to go. But V6 is fine if you are just going for a hand drawn look.

The thing i've found about working in this style is that some people are always going to think it's copyright, just because of the similar style. Dumb, I know, but that's people for you. Hopefully the pencil will help.

I think the shading adds something but it loses some of the original focus as well. I may do a little bit as per v5, or maybe flat colour like v4. And when I stop worrying about perceived copyright issues, I think I'd go for the earlier characters as well (which are definitely not copied!). Not sure about the skull.

I think the next version should be the last one; after that it'd be getting down to a matter of taste rather than quality I think. Thanks for sticking with it!

I prefer V5 characters with V6 background minus the skull.

I do like the V6 patchwork on the little hunchback guy.

I don't like the V6 facial-hair-look on the other guy.



Well, I still like V5 background too. I like that it's more vague, nothing to distract from what's going on. But V6 has more chemistry lab things that fit what's going on....I just don't like the skull. Sorry.

Thanks mamaGiraffe, I think you've pretty much summarised what I need to do (including the skull, as Smelynai suggested as well. Faces just draw too much attention to themselves). I'm still not sure if I should have shading on the characters, but if I do it'll be more like v5 than v6. It's a real balancing act now! One more go. Just one more...

Here are the suggested changes which most of us seem to agree with, plus a couple of character tweaks. I'd like to change the name, possibly to "Mad Genius" or "Crazy Invention". "Eureka" was suggested and fits superbly, but I thought it might be good to use words that more people know and can spell!

this is a solid idea, really cool, maybe make it more fantastic, like a mickey mouse movie.

The character is an inventor/ scientist type, not an explorer...so the "Invention" part of the title should not change.

Yep, I'm happy with it hmo87ster! It captures what I was after but didn't quite know how to get. A big part of what I wanted was a design that a whole bunch of people could enjoy (I'm not being an unselfish hero; I just figure there'd be no point sharing it with a community or trying to get it printed if it was just for me), and that was something I definitely needed help with. I think I'd need a lot more confidence and experience before submitting without a critique! So I'm happy with both the result and the process.
