no i think that would look even stranger. i like your design the way it is and that eye is AWESOME. you just need to think about alternate placements on the shirt. maybe a little something on the back.

I love the mechanical eye, but I don't really like the layout of the shirt in general. Maybe make the eye centered on the shirt or something.. Also, try experimenting with other t-shirt colors, cream might look good??

version two, front is far more understated. the text around the eye:



big brother is watching you



the back is a graphic representation of the motto from the book "V for Victory" with the redy eye camera lens from the fron as the "o" in for.

also, note, i dropped the "we are watching you, in favor of the "big brother is watching you" text. all though it could possibly return on the back, replacing "v for victory".

the eye alone is fantastic, I don't think the type is working in either versions.



the graphic is so strong on it's own that the type is merely an afterthought as far as I'm concerned and you don't need it.

I'm not a big fan of the V, nor the 1984. Keep the eye on the back though. i think the 1984 makes it too much of an obvious reference.



Also not too sure about having it on white. Maybe a darker colour would suit it better - Dakota Slate?

there is no overt text in this one. a lot of people seem to want no text on it, but i really wanted 1984 on it some where, so i met you half way. it appears as makers text in the pupil lens, in a way which i think (and i am asking wheter you agree or not) is very organic. I feel that if you did not know it was there it would not jump out at you.



think of this as the textless version.

The text on the lens is cool! Such direct reference does not need to jump out.

But anyway, I guess some extra text is a need... this way is no more than a mechanic eye, very hard t relate to 1984.

I don't see why it shouldn't take up a large part of the back either. It should be bold and in your face, that's what the whole idea behind the book was about, unforgiving, all knowing, all watching.

I like the first version, its really cool. If you have to lose the 1984 bit I'd taper off the line above the eye towards the end. I'd buy one!

This one makes the whole eye thing become too much mechanical.

Just the iris was a nice touch... one that might take an extra second for first time viewers to notice, but now it's too obvious.

put some lashes on it and it would be a good "a clockwork orange" illustration, especially since the eye already has a clock look to it.

Stubborn as I am, I still like v5 best!

But anyway, this one is cool too. I'd say to work on the metal sphere around the eye.. better shadows, reflexes, that kind of thing.

Moreover, if you intend to use more than just one eye, it would be great to use another pattern for the iris, not just rotate, mirror and such (copy-and-paste on designs looks so awful)

The new iris is good, but I feel there was no hole in the middle of it for the camera (see upper gear).

You have a cracker of an idea and a design to match. You've got to choose your final design and stick to it. It's a case of too many cooks soiling the broth. I'll stick my two penneth in, the eye in your design is excellent , your design should exploit this to the full. I think you should choose a suitably good looking but evil staring face and replace his eyes with those cam 84 eyes ,showing about 4/5th of the face. what ever you choose you should stop taking advice now and use you own judgement . Your 9 versions casts doubts over your deciveness

I am taking a break from the design, and i thank everyone for their continued support for this sub. I am posting, today, however, to make a sad, but not incotrovertible update.



during a cleaning of my drives and systems in preperation for the move to my new laptop, I lost the original raster file and most of my back up jpegs for the design, aswell as several threadless-irrevelant but important files. most of the stuff i need i have been able to recover, but the one thing it is looking like i am not going to get is the raster file and the back upt jpeg for version 9. I apologize to those who are fans of it.



the good news, however, is that I was able to retrieve the back up jpegs and for all previous versions and the raster for versions 5 and earlier, so the subbed version is still legit.



hope it gets printed. ^_^

I think the white parts are a bit too much "photoshop-filter". Perhaps you should try to make cleaner lines by drawing it in illustrator... I like the first version better, this isnt looking as much like an eye... I like to think that the eye belong to a face on a person, not a lens in a videokamera... great colors, and I love the iris on the eye itself!!!

Are the outer white lines another camera? In this case, you may be overdoing it. You need new aspects on the design, not repeating the same ones.

I still prefer v5... you know that I'm a fan of it ;)



Anyway, if you want to stick with this concept (yay), try something more aggressively different, like giving a face to this eye, as I suggested some time ago (see v9 comment)

just so people know: I am still kind of holding out for version five. If we reach 150 days post-score and it still hasn't got any print action, than i'll move on and sub version 10 or a later one. for now though, if you are all about version 5 (i know quite a few of the people following the design are) than keep in mind that I can't re-sub it, its already been up and its already gotten a great score. I don't know if there is anything that we can really do to support it any further than we have, but if you want to try, please don't hesitate. I don't know, maybe the staff watched the blogs for buzz, maybe not, either way i know it always brightens up my day when you guys are big on it. for now though its just a bit more of the waiting game.

I felt people may dig on 12. I went back to v5 (the previous sub) and thought about how people said they liked the eye being as eye like as possible, and worked with the rings to try to make the iris look more like an iris from a distance.

They both have elements I dislike.

I'm kind of a perfectionist, and in here I see the original mechanical iris pattern with the upper layer of 'iris divisions'. If I'm to say something, get real iris patterns for each section of it (pretty much the same I said when you subbed a version with two eyes and mirrored pattern)

I really hate (and I mean it) the outer white things around the eye in v11, moreover it's harder for first-time lookers to notice that it's an eye in a black shirt, and in v12 that iris divisions are ruining the design pretty badly.

It's really hard to pick one of them (unfortunately not in the good sense), but I'd say I prefer 12, mostly because it's at least good looking at distance.



Sorry for the harsh comment, man! I want this concept in my shirt, and I would like to have it as amazing as one can imagine.

The camera lens look good. Most of the elements in black still look livetraced and therefore not very pleasing to the eye. If you smoothed this all up it would probably look pretty good, but right now it just looks far too rough.

well, thanks for the comments. I really don't see this design changing much more from here on out. Really, I still wish V5 had got printed, because at this point the design is playing against itself. Those who have been following it since I started it in summer are attached (much as I am) to the older versions.



Madruga, I know what you mean about the iris, because you've been following the design pretty much as long as I have been working on it, and have basically been saying to stay simple since version 5, as a lot of others have as well. Fortunately, v5 did great when I subbed it, unfortunately, it looks like its not going to get printed. this means two things: the design still has support, and, regrettably, v5 is basically done for. even if I was to simply vectorize version 5, I probably couldn't resub it, as it would still be seen as a duplicate rather than a redesign.



Others, who are new to design and the concept, have new or renewed suggestions that they would like to see acted on, but which I am unlikely to do based on the success the design has had so far and the amount of redesign I have already put it through.



Staffell, your comment is the best example of this. My design was originally made completely in (an ancient version of) photoshop, a fairly simple chopping, altering, re-coloring and posterization of various images I had accumulated. This design was, as such, a fundamentally gritty and rough design from the start, something I think helped it. However, it was to a degree, too rough (one of the many things I fear prevented version 5 from being printed) so upon finally being able to afford upgrades to CS3, and having already reached the stage of redesign. I did basically just throw it through trace to clean it up slightly. compared with, and i mean this literally, all previous versions of the design, v11 and 12 are sleek to the point that i was afraid I was losing the grittiness of the design. obviously not, but still, i guess you can see what i mean.

I like the iris better on 11. 12 looks too jumble and doesn't look like the gears and computer pieces.

I'm sorry your version 5 was not printed and I'm sorry I dont see why this version 12 is better at all! The eye is less mechanical and the filter for drawing the eye still looks like a photo played with in photoshop. You really should have tried drawing it in another style, cause the idea is so good! And yes, one of the reasons it didnt get more votes in the first place can be that its on a white shirt... and that some people would rather have this big eye as a poster on the wall than on their chest :) good luck anyways! but I feel you've really got stuck on this design now! new year, new starts on fresh designs!

Personally I prefer version 11 but then that's partly because it's on a black shirt.

The white shirt is the better choice, you can see the depths of the design--it sort of gets lost on the black. I'm sure George Orwell would wear this.
