A very tedious project, but it turned out decent in my opinion.

Inspiration came from a history teacher who made the comment, "Don't judge my art, I only draw in stick figures." This sketch is entirely made up of stick figures with a blue-green color scheme. A large placement on the shirt is the only thing that looked good to me.

I agree with pixl about the stick guys being too small. What if you only put half of his face on the shirt--like imagine slicing his head diagonally fromthe top right ot the bottom left and put the left half on the shirt--the hair and eyebrows are actually the coolest part of the face w/ all those sticks. You would only have one eye on the shirt so really focus on making that eye standout too. I think it will be great! Good luck!

Good idea! yes maybe they are a luttle tiny, but then that could add to the surprise factor when a person gets up close to you. Good luck with yours!

big picture out of little picture is usually well received, sub it and see what happens

i like the idea, but i think it should be more subtle.. i mean, i think people should notice the little stick guys first, and then the bigger face..

also for that, you could make a better use of shadows/light.. and not just work with outlining.. i don't know if you get what i mean.. so i did this very quick:

I love this idea.

I would say that I'm a bit concerned about the right eye's placement. Although the off centered design you did does add a bit more visual interest I would say that if printed the eye on the right might be obscured by the wearer because it is in the crease of the arm.

And although I know you don't want to be critiqued on your drawing I have some tips for you if I may.

I had a horrible time drawing faces when I first started sketching. But once you get the general rules down for facial proportions it becomes a piece of cake. Especially on drawings like this one where its mainly contours and outlines and tricky shadows and highlights aren't a problem.

Practice makes perfect and I believe this design could be real interesting if you tightened up the overall drawing a bit.

pxls, that was a concern of mine as well. I could redo the entire sketch with a larger brush (it's a custom brush of a stick figure), but that would be a bit frustrating and presents the problem of not being able to have small enough lines for detail. I've been working in 3000 pixels, by the way so hopefully it won't be a problem. Also, if you look at that second slide, the image in the background isn't zoomed in too terribly far and the stick figures are still very distinguishable.

charity.ryan, I'll definitely try that and see what it looks like. I experimented a little bit with that already, but it's definitely worth a shot. My only worry is that the nose will be obscured or hidden which may distort the image of the face too much.

ninopolisel, I understand what you're saying. I'll try to add some shading and lighting or at least suggestions of it, but with one constant medium (such as these stick figures) it's a bit difficult to show value. But yeah, I'll definitely try to bring out some shading.

hungrycrocodile, ummm....about 2 weeks a little bit each day. You get burnt out pretty quick just placing stick figures everywhere.

Lmo6, Yeah, I was concerned about placement of the eye as well. However, I don't know if it will matter incredibly much if the eye is distorted. It would probably be distorted enough to not even resemble an eye (with the arms down, of course). If that happens viewer might be able to ignore it completely or assume it was there. charity's idea though may solve that problem as well.
Oh, I was completely expecting critiques on my actual drawing! I'm actually surprised you are the only one. That site helps a ton though! Thank you! I can already see areas where I can improve (mouth structure, nose proportions, and eye detail). Thanks again, though. Your suggestions have been invaluable.

hahahaha cute idea :D I'd play around with the placement of the features some more - maybe bring the mouth a little lower, maybe change the sizes of some of the facial features.... might also be cool if the little stickmen were just a tad bigger, but I understand if doing that would be an immense hassle :P

I dig the concept. I think the right eye being off might hurt the overall design. I think you can keep the two eyes on the front of the shirt and still have it bleeding off. I think it might be a tad stronger if the hair was dark - adding more men and just having highlights.

I say the idea is good and it should fetch a good score.

Alright, I worked on they eyes, nose, and mouth, but there's only so much I can do with simply outlines and no shading.

I tried the shading idea that was suggested, but it just started looking messy.

Here are few placement options that hopefully remedy the problems addressed. Let me know which one you like best.

Also, I tweaked the colors just a bit. Let me know if there's a certain color scheme you'd like to see.

I like the large image from many small ones idea. V clever indeed. The 2-eyed version is the best. Too much white space on the 1-eyed version, is misleading. The 2-E has more balance. Reminds me of Duran Duran/The The/80's New Romantic pop. Best of luck, mate. :-)

I want to see more line weight in the face. the neck and the hair are really good, but I would want to see that through out the whole face.

It's a good idea, but I agree with what people said earlier, the stick figures probably won't show up super clear if it's printed when they're super tiny. I also like the one eyed version myself.

Thanks for the critiques guys. I'll thicken the lines and try to get a zoom placement somewhere between the two. I want to try to include at least some of the nose.

Took me FOREVER, but I think I found a good placement. I can't decide whether I like it zoomed more or less though. The two new versions are V4 and V5. To see zoomed in less look at the version below this.

More (V3) shows more of the design, but is less interesting in some respects.

Less (V4) adds more interest to the design I believe, but also has a lot of negative space.

Help me decide. I am really truly torn.

Okay scratch that last design. I messed up on the wording and everything.

How does this placement and zoom amount look? We lose the ear, and have a lot of negative space, but I think it looks good from a design standpoint. I also have a similar placement zoomed out more ready if you guys would like to see that.

I vote submit it!, really cool design, I can only draw stick figures too, but not in any cool patern like yours. I think it'll get printed! I like the placement too, the one with only half the face and the ear looks really cut off.

i like the idea, but all the figures are the same. would be much cooler if there is some variation between them. also try to draw them a lot cleaner, it looks like they've all got different gradients around them... (it makes them fuzzy)

For me, the best part about it is not seeing immediately that they're stick figures. I really like the size and placement of the design.

What other color shirt could it be? Gray?

Mtths, trust me, this is just about as clean as they can get. Each figure has an outline of color but the fuzziness, is just the quality of the jpg image. I had to reduce the size of the files to fit it all in a flash presentation. The original is 3000 X 3000 pixels.

Grr...of course it's difficult to tell they're stick figures until you are up close. Sorry, I'm just a little frustrated by those kind of comments right now. Especially with people voting "Don't Submit" without commenting.

I'd put it on a silver gray or heather gray shirt (whatever looks better) and submit it. It's a really cool idea, and you've been working on it for a long time. It's ready to go!! :D

Silver gray color shirt this time. Personally I don't like it as much, but if you guys think it looks better, then there you go.

I actually messed with the color scheme a bit and a red/purple look is actually quite appealing with gray. Should I post it?

Oh and mtths, I appreciated your comment on V4, but you have to understand that your suggestion of varying every single stick figure is close to impossible, especially at this point. You do realize there's over a thousand figures here, right? Maybe next time.

I'd love to see red/purple on gray. I think that may be the winning combination. These greens somehow pull me back to those ancient monitors with black screens and the green flashing prompt.

Critique-wise, when you're viewing the guy wearing the shirt, the design in the background is kinda distracting. Maybe if you lower the opacity of the design in the background, it might not look so distracting. Maybe, also, have a different colored background instead of white. Just an idea.

Ooh! Havn't viewed it in a while--I love the zoomed look but I miss the hair--it was alot of fun with all those stick men. V2 was great with the one-eye version. Either color scheme works in my opinion--have you tried filling in the eyes a bit--empty pupils always bother me.

I cant think of anything that you should improve. Looks like you reached the designs full potential. I am not too sure about the concept though. I have tried something similar which did not catch on (take a look at "simple" in my designs if you are interested). Good luck with the submission.

RoeeSch...I don't know that our designs are really that similar to be honest. Yes, we both have small figures on our shirts, but they are completely different concepts.

I think the design needs to be smaller on the shirt. There is a lot of work in the hair and its not being properly reflected on the current tee. ^ Yeah, I actually saw that design while it was on the critique blog and commented on it (mainly about the similarity of the two).

And I've tried a less amount of zoom for the face, but most people liked the bigger face. In the next version I'll show a comparison of the two faces.

When you look at this design on actual shirt you might not be able to see the stick figures as they are unless you get close to the wearer. I'm actually not sure you need the colour. This might work better as a one colour and remove the blur from around the edges of the figures would make the figures easier to see. It's still great as it is though. Good luck :)

The blur is an unintentional result of blending the stick figures layer with a color pattern with color blending mode. I'll see if there's an alternate way to get the colors to transfer without the blurry edges of each figure.

Like it =) But I think the left pupil (from us) it is necessary to shift to the right.

Rad idea but I agree that the eyes arent quite together... Try flipping the image horizontally [or look at it in a mirror].

Alrighty, I can definitely fix the eyes.

And I actually have flipped it horizontally to make sure proportions and locations were correct. I moved the left eye because I thought it looked off. I guess it looks worse from this perspective.

what a fun idea! if this one doesn't do well, i would say try it again but with a non human medium. i would say the eye looks fine except the pupil.

I like it, at first I didn't get it though but after i went through the other versions then I caught on for what you were kinda going for. The only think I would suggest is maybe placing a few stick figures outside of the face just so people understand that its made of stick figures but i dont think that really matters a whole lot. I definitely dig the gradient effect too

cool! i think just the left pupil needs fixing not the whole eye; it kinda looks like each eye is looking in a slightly different direction. i don't kno about kingforaday's idea tho, or the stick overlay, bcuz it seems to me like one of the coolest parts would be that from far away you wouldn't be able to get it. but then when you got closer to the person, you would see the little stick figures and tht would be pretty sick

I don't want repeat other, so I'd just say that maybe the print is too large to be printed. Don't get you design rejected just because it requires printing on sleeve stitches and stuff...

Wow, this is really neat! Some of the larger stick figures in the detail seem really blurry... is that in the design? You should consider trying to sharpen them up.

I'm never a fan of white tees; I'd really love to see this on an obnoxiously bright colour with the stick figures in greyscale.

If it eases your pain, elliemaybe, it's actually on a silver gray which is a very light gray, but not white, nevertheless. : )

As for the blurriness of the larger stick figures, that's a result of the blending mode of the color on top of the black and white figures. Each stick has an 'aura' of color around it to create the color effect from a distance. It may appear a bit blurry, but I doubt it would make our break the design. Although...I could try the sharpen tool in PS. Hmm... : )

Also, it could be the compression of the image to fit in a swf. I notice that some figures look blurrier than others. Perhaps I can fit a tad larger file size.

This is a killer concept, but I'd say the mouth and eyes still need a little work before you submit...

Love the concept and the work you've put in there. Would sub it, but I would reverse the slides, so the detail level is on the first one. Otherwise you'll risk people clicking through because they 'just' see a face. Good luck with it!
